To tie a boat to a dock, use bow and stern lines to control fore-and-aft movement, add a breast or spring line when needed, protect the hull with fenders, and secure each line with a cleat hitch. Prepare before approaching, then leave the lines snug—not tight enough to strain—as wakes and changing water levels move the boat. The right setup depends on whether you are alongside a dock or in a slip.
Prepare before approaching the dock
Set up the boat before it reaches the dock so a crew member is not trying to sort lines while the boat is alongside. NASBLA’s power-boating competency material treats arrival and securing as skills that account for wind, current, and expected tides; it is a training benchmark, not a local docking law. - Check wind, current, nearby traffic, and the dock or slip layout.
- Prepare bow, stern, and any additional lines on the boat’s cleats. Coil them so they are ready to handle.
- Position fenders between the hull and dock, especially near the boat’s widest point and likely contact areas.
- Approach slowly and keep the crew ready to handle lines without jumping between boat and dock.
Discover Boating’s arrival guide also emphasizes preparing lines and fenders before contact. Discover Boating: How to Dock a Boat

For a side tie, start with a bow line led forward and a stern line led aft. These opposing leads limit movement along the dock. Add a breast line—typically led roughly perpendicular from a midship or suitable aft cleat—to help keep the boat from moving away from the dock. A spring line can also restrain fore-and-aft movement, depending on its lead and the dock arrangement.

Attach lines to sound dock cleats or pilings, and set fenders at points where the hull could meet the dock. The exact number and lead of lines depend on the boat, dock hardware, and conditions; there is no single arrangement that suits every side tie.
How to tie up a boat in a slip
A common slip arrangement uses two bow lines led to the forward structure and two stern lines led to the rear structure. Where the layout allows, crossing the pairs helps keep the boat centered and limits forward and backward movement. Marina hardware and the shape of a particular slip may call for different leads, so adapt the arrangement rather than forcing a standard pattern.

How to tie a cleat hitch
Use a cleat hitch to secure a dock line to a cleat. Its basic shape is a figure-eight across the cleat horns, finished with a locking loop. Discover Boating’s knot guide describes reversing direction and flipping a loop over a horn to cinch the hitch; its docking guide gives a step sequence that starts at the cleat base, turns around a horn, crosses the center, and finishes with a half-hitch made by flipping the line under the final loop. The descriptions differ in detail, so follow a clear demonstration that matches the cleat’s orientation. Discover Boating: Boating Knots Discover Boating: How to Dock a Boat
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Take the line around the base of the cleat, then make a turn around a horn.
- Bring the line across the cleat to form a figure-eight, taking turns around the horns as needed.
- Finish with a locking loop: form a loop in the working end, flip it under the final turn, and place it over a horn to lock the hitch.
- Pull the line snug and check that the hitch is seated on the cleat rather than bearing on its tip alone.
A clove hitch is not a substitute for a cleat hitch on a dock cleat. Discover Boating warns that a clove hitch can come undone if pressure is not maintained or the knot rotates, and advises against it for heavy-duty securing such as tying a boat to a dock.

Choose line length and leave room for movement
BoatUS gives a general rule of thumb of about two-thirds of the boat’s overall length for ordinary dock lines; its 2012 guidance says spring lines should be considerably longer. This is guidance, not a universal specification: dock geometry and the intended lead affect the length you need. BoatUS: Dock Lines
Set lines snugly but do not strain them. They need enough give to absorb shock from waves and wakes. In tidal water, leave sufficient length for the boat to rise and fall; lines that are too tight can put excessive load on the boat’s cleats or dock pilings. Recheck the setup when conditions or water level change.

Match the setup to the situation
| Situation | Typical line arrangement | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Side tie | Bow line forward, stern line aft, plus a breast line or spring line when appropriate | Bow and stern leads limit fore-and-aft travel; a breast line helps restrain movement away from the dock, while a spring line can help limit fore-and-aft movement. |
| Slip | Two bow lines to the forward structure and two stern lines to the rear, often crossed where the layout allows | Helps control forward and backward movement and keep the boat centered. |
Line length, amount of slack, and the need for added restraint depend on dock geometry, wakes, wind and current, and—where relevant—tide. NASBLA’s March 2015 training benchmark describes bringing a boat to a safe stop within 12 inches of a dock, slip, mooring, ramp, or shoreline. That is a skills benchmark, not a universal operating target or regulation. NASBLA power-boating competency material
