How to Throw in Gang Beasts: Controls, Timing, and Momentum

To throw someone in Gang Beasts, hold both grab inputs, lift the target, move or spin to build momentum, then release both grab inputs in the direction you want. On PlayStation, use L1 + R1 to grab and Triangle to lift; on Xbox, use LB + RB and Y; on PC, hold the left and right mouse buttons and press Shift to lift.

The complete throw sequence

A successful throw has four linked actions: grab, lift, move, and release. Missing any one of them usually produces a shove, a dropped opponent, or a weak toss rather than a deliberate launch.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Face the target. Stand close enough that both hands can connect with the opponent or object.
  2. Grab with both hands. Hold both grab inputs continuously. A one-handed grip can move or swing a target, but it does not provide the same lifting control.
  3. Lift while maintaining the grab. Hold the platform’s lift button. When the grab has connected, the character raises the target, often above their head.
  4. Move into the throw. Walk or run toward a ledge, hazard, or open direction. A short run, turn, or spin gives the release more momentum.
  5. Release both grab inputs. Let go at the moment and angle that sends the opponent away from you. Releasing while the target is high in the lift can create an overhead-style throw.

The safest basic version is to lift, carry the opponent to the edge of the stage, and release there. Throwing from the middle of a crowded fight is harder to control because other players can interrupt the grab or change your direction.

Default throw controls by platform

These are the default mappings documented in the control guide. Gang Beasts allows remapping, so an input that does not work may simply have been changed in the game’s controls menu.

Platform Grab with both hands Lift while grabbing Move or carry Throw
PlayStation Hold L1 + R1 Hold Triangle Left analog stick Release L1 + R1
Xbox Hold LB + RB Hold Y Left analog stick Release LB + RB
PC keyboard and mouse Hold left click + right click Hold Shift WASD Release both mouse buttons

The lift input is separate from the grab inputs. Holding Triangle, Y, or Shift by itself will not throw anything; the character must already be holding the target. Likewise, releasing only one grab button usually leaves one hand attached, so the opponent may swing, drop, or remain held instead of flying away.

How to perform a controlled edge throw

1. Create a stable grip

Approach the opponent from the front or side and hold both grab buttons. Watch the character’s hands: both should be attached before you start lifting. If only one hand connects, reposition rather than immediately trying to carry the target.

2. Lift before you run

Keep the two-handed grip and press the lift input. Once the target is raised, use the movement control to carry them. Starting the run before the lift has connected often causes the target to drag, slip, or rotate around your body.

3. Choose the destination

Move toward a stage edge, a gap, or a hazard such as machinery. In Gang Beasts, the objective is often to remove an opponent from a platform rather than to deal a precise amount of damage. A short, direct route is easier to defend than a long trip across the arena.

4. Add a little momentum

Run in the intended direction, or turn and spin while keeping the grip. Momentum can make the target leave your hands with more force than a stationary release. You do not need a large circle: a brief movement that aligns your body with the destination is usually easier to time.

5. Release at the right height

For a straightforward toss, release both grab inputs while moving toward the destination. For an overhead-style throw, begin releasing near the top of the lift, when the target is close to the apex. The exact result depends on your position, the target’s posture, and the stage geometry, so practice the timing rather than treating it as a fixed animation frame.

Momentum, lift height, and release timing

Gang Beasts developer glumjamesbrown described throwing as a momentum-based action. Momentum can come from running and spinning, or from pressing the lift button briefly and releasing near the apex of the lift. That advice explains why a stationary release and a moving release feel different even when the same buttons are used.

Throwing is done with momentum. The necessary momentum can be made by running and spinning, but can also be made by pressing the lift button for a short time before releasing—lifting the object and then releasing close to the apex of the lift.

Use the following timing choices for different situations:

Approach How it works Best use Main risk
Stationary overhead release Grab with both hands, lift, and release near the top without taking a long run. Dropping a target over a nearby edge when there is little room to move. The target may land close to you if the release direction is not aligned.
Running carry Lift first, then move directly toward the destination and release while moving. Reliable edge throws on wide platforms. You can be tackled or pulled off balance while carrying.
Spin or swing Keep the grab while turning to build rotational momentum, then release. Clearing space or sending a target away from a crowded center. Rotation changes your facing and can send the target in an unintended direction.
Short lift then release Use a brief lift and let go close to the lift apex. Quick throws when an opponent is already near a hazard. Releasing too early produces a weak drop rather than a launch.

The developer also noted that lifting with both hands gives more lift force, while swinging an item with one hand can create additional momentum. These are technique guidelines, not published distance multipliers: no independently measured throw-distance statistic has been established.

Two-handed lifting versus one-handed swinging

Both grips have a place in a fight, but they solve different problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Feature Two-handed grab and lift One-handed swing
Control More stable hold and the normal way to raise a character overhead. Less stable, but useful for dragging or swinging an object.
Lift force The developer says both hands provide more lift force. Not intended for the strongest overhead lift.
Momentum Can be increased by running, spinning, or releasing near the lift apex. Swinging can add momentum, especially when an object is already moving.
Recommended goal Carry an opponent to a ledge and release with a predictable direction. Disrupt an opponent, reposition an object, or create space before securing a two-handed grip.

Do not interpret the one-hand technique as a guaranteed longer throw. The available guidance explains the physics qualitatively and does not give a measured success rate, damage value, or range increase.

Why knocking an opponent out helps

An awake character can resist, shift their body, and change how your hands are positioned. Community gameplay advice commonly recommends knocking the opponent out first, then securing a two-handed grab and carrying them to the edge. Treat this as a practical tactic rather than a documented, measured rule: the game does not publish a probability that a knockout guarantees a successful throw.

When the opponent is still active, keep your carry short and avoid stopping in the center. If they begin to pull against you, release and re-engage instead of holding the lift button indefinitely. A fresh grab from a better angle is often safer than allowing the struggle to turn into a mutual fall.

Using throws around hazards and ring-outs

The official game description presents Gang Beasts as a physics-driven melee party game set in Beef City, where players grab, push, shove, and throw opponents into machinery and other stage hazards. Throwing is therefore both a movement mechanic and a win-condition tool.

Edges and gaps

Carry the target until your own feet are safely positioned, then release toward the outside. Releasing too early can leave the opponent on the platform while your momentum carries you over the edge.

Moving machinery

Use a short, controlled run rather than a large spin when aiming at machinery. Rotational momentum is harder to predict near moving hazards, and an unexpected turn can place your character in danger.

Crowded fights

Secure space before lifting. Another player can grab either fighter, interrupt the carry, or change the release angle. If several characters are close together, a quick shove or one-hand swing may be better for creating room than attempting a full throw immediately.

Troubleshooting failed throws

  • The target will not lift: Confirm that both grab inputs are held and that the lift input is being pressed after the grip connects. Move closer or change your angle if one hand is missing.
  • The opponent drops immediately: You may be releasing one grab input accidentally. Check that both shoulder buttons or both mouse buttons remain held until the intended release.
  • The throw has no distance: Add a short run, turn, or spin before releasing. You can also hold the lift briefly and release near its apex.
  • The target goes the wrong way: Align your character’s body with the destination before letting go. Spinning changes your facing, so stop rotating before the final release if direction matters.
  • You keep falling with the opponent: Carry from a safer position, avoid standing on the lip of the platform, and release before your own momentum crosses the edge.
  • The listed buttons do nothing: Open the in-game controls screen. The documented mappings are defaults and may have been remapped or changed by an update.

Practice drills that build reliable timing

  1. Grip drill: In a quiet area, grab a stationary prop with both hands, lift it, and release without moving. This teaches the difference between a connected two-handed hold and a partial grab.
  2. Direction drill: Repeat the same lift while walking in four directions. Notice how your body orientation affects the release path.
  3. Apex drill: Lift a prop, hold the lift briefly, and release at different points in the rise. Compare an early drop, an apex release, and a late release.
  4. Carry drill: Pick up an opponent or prop, walk to an edge, stop, and release. Once that is consistent, add a short run.
  5. Momentum drill: Compare a straight run, a small turn, and a full spin. Use the least movement that achieves the direction you need; excessive rotation makes the result harder to control.

Platform and edition notes

The controls above cover the documented PlayStation, Xbox, and PC defaults. Players on other editions should use the control display inside the game rather than assuming another platform’s buttons. The official Nintendo Switch page confirms a Switch edition, with up to four players on one console and up to eight players online; local wireless play is exclusive to Switch. Those multiplayer formats make edge awareness especially important, because an attempted throw can be interrupted by several nearby players.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Game controls and physics behavior can change with updates, and the control guide is dated 2021 while the developer’s momentum explanation comes from a 2014 Steam discussion. Recheck the current in-game controls screen whenever the displayed inputs differ from this guide.

What is and is not measured

There is no reliable published statistic for throw distance, throw success rate, damage, or knockout probability. Running, spinning, two-handed lifting, and apex releases are supported as practical techniques, but they should not be presented as guaranteed multipliers or fixed percentages. Stage layout, character position, resistance, and timing all affect the outcome.

For a repeatable result, prioritize the sequence: secure both hands, lift, carry to a safe destination, align your movement, and release both grabs together. Add momentum only after the basic carry is under control.
