What YouTube does automatically when someone joins
When a viewer becomes a member while your channel is live, YouTube displays a bright green “New Member” message in live chat and pins that member’s profile picture at the top of chat for five minutes. This is YouTube’s built-in live welcome; you do not need to create an overlay to get it. YouTube Help describes the new-member chat message and profile-picture pin.
The built-in welcome is a chat treatment, not a confirmed spoken announcement or custom on-screen animation. If viewers watch the video rather than chat, or chat is hidden, they may not notice it.
Choose how prominent the thank-you should be

YouTube’s third-party integration page lists StreamElements for member overlays and live alerts. Its integration documentation also notes that third-party tools are governed by their own terms.

Set up a member overlay with StreamElements
- Open YouTube’s third-party integrations guidance and follow its StreamElements link to the current tool. Confirm the current account connection and permissions screens there; the exact UI labels and steps are not specified in YouTube’s listing.
- In StreamElements, look for a membership or new-member event alert and choose the visual treatment, message and membership-level details you want to show. Confirm that the event is a channel membership alert, rather than a Super Chat or other notification.
- Add the configured overlay to the software or stream output that sends your broadcast to YouTube. Preview it before leaving a 24/7 stream unattended, and verify that the alert is readable at your stream’s resolution and does not obscure important content.
- Check the integration’s permissions and data handling. YouTube says membership data available through its Members API can include a member’s channel URL, name, profile image link, join time and membership level; consider what information your third-party provider can access and how it uses it.
These are verification-oriented steps, not a claim that a particular current StreamElements screen or setting has been independently confirmed. Consult the provider’s current help material for exact controls.
What changes when the creator is offline
A 24/7 broadcast can make the live welcome available whenever a member joins during the broadcast, but it does not turn offline membership joins into live alerts. YouTube says it does not send the creator a notification when someone joins while the creator is offline. Review membership information in YouTube Studio’s Memberships tab to find those joins. YouTube’s membership management guidance covers the offline notification distinction.

You can also enable YouTube’s Member Recognition Shelf, which displays member avatars as public thanks on the channel page. The set of avatars shown can change over time, so it is a supplementary recognition feature rather than a guaranteed alert for each join. See YouTube’s channel memberships help.
Build a custom API workflow only if you need custom behavior
YouTube describes its Live Chat API as supporting real-time reading, sending and moderation of messages during a live broadcast. That capability can underpin a custom workflow, but the high-level description is not a complete recipe for detecting membership events or keeping a custom notifier reliable around the clock. Before building one, verify the current API documentation for event access and authorization, and design for reconnects, duplicate handling, moderation and safe message formatting. Do not assume an event missed during a disconnect will be replayed.

If a third-party tool receives member information, review its permissions and data practices. YouTube’s documentation says membership data may include identifying channel details and membership level, and that creators may share it with a third party to deliver membership perks.
Check channel and stream eligibility
- YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel and no live-stream restriction during the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- YouTube says channel memberships are supported for horizontal live streams and vertical live feeds. Check the current eligibility and availability rules for your channel in YouTube Studio.
- Membership recognition only applies when channel memberships are available and a viewer actually joins. Follow YouTube’s applicable channel and content policies; an always-on format does not establish that every stream or video is eligible for monetization.
Troubleshoot missing or unnoticed alerts
No built-in “New Member” chat message
- Join happened while you were offline: YouTube does not send an offline join notification. Check Studio’s Memberships tab.
- The viewer joined during a live broadcast, but chat is not visible: check the live chat panel and its display state. The built-in welcome is a chat message, not proof of a video overlay.
- Live streaming is unavailable: verify channel status, verification and recent live-stream restrictions in YouTube Studio.
No StreamElements overlay or alert
- Wrong event selected: confirm the configured trigger is for channel memberships and not another monetization event.
- Connection or permission issue: review the currently authorized YouTube account and permissions in the integration. Exact interface details can change.
- Alert may be present but not visible: preview the overlay in the stream output and check its position, size and visibility against the actual content.
- Tool behavior is unclear: consult current StreamElements support documentation; YouTube’s integration listing does not promise uptime or specify all setup and recovery behavior.
