To use Wi-Fi for calls and carrier-supported messages on a Samsung Galaxy phone, connect to Wi-Fi and turn on Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi Calling. Your phone, carrier, and active SIM or eSIM must support the feature. Messaging can also use RCS over Wi-Fi, but RCS is a separate service and does not make SMS, MMS, and RCS behave identically.
Turn on Wi-Fi Calling on your Galaxy
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Join a working Wi-Fi network before changing the setting.
- Open Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi Calling, then switch Wi-Fi Calling on. Some Galaxy phones also offer a Wi-Fi Calling control in Quick Settings. Samsung’s U.S. setup guidance gives this path; labels can vary by device, software, and carrier.
- Complete any carrier prompts. If asked, review and save the emergency address information required by your carrier. Samsung lists emergency-address settings among Wi-Fi Calling options.
- Check that your line is active. The phone needs carrier service through an active SIM or eSIM, and the carrier must support and provision Wi-Fi Calling for that phone and line.
Samsung describes Wi-Fi Calling as a way to “make calls and send messages over a Wi-Fi connection when cell service isn’t available.” That describes a carrier feature, not a guarantee that every message app or message type will use Wi-Fi. Samsung’s U.K. guidance also notes that the network provider must enable the feature and that an active SIM is required. Availability and menu options vary.

If the Wi-Fi Calling menu is missing or activation fails, ask your carrier whether Wi-Fi Calling is supported and provisioned for your exact Galaxy model and line. Samsung’s U.S. instructions note that AT&T phones need VoLTE turned on to activate Wi-Fi Calling; that condition is specific to AT&T.

The route depends on the messaging service, app, carrier, and phone. Wi-Fi Calling and RCS are distinct paths, and carrier SMS/MMS support can depend on your line. Samsung and Google do not establish one universal delivery rule for every Galaxy, carrier, and message type.

| Messaging path | How Wi-Fi fits | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Carrier Wi-Fi Calling | Samsung says supported Galaxy phones can make calls and send messages over Wi-Fi when cellular service is unavailable, if the carrier and phone support the feature. | Wi-Fi Calling is enabled; the phone and carrier support it; the line has active SIM or eSIM service. Ask the carrier about line-specific SMS/MMS support. |
| RCS chat | Google says RCS can send messages over Wi-Fi or mobile data. It is separate from SMS and MMS. | RCS is available and configured for the device, provider, and account. See Google’s RCS overview and RCS setup and troubleshooting. |
| SMS/MMS without Wi-Fi Calling | Whether these carrier messages can be delivered over Wi-Fi depends on the carrier’s service and the device; the cited guidance does not establish a universal route. | Confirm support with your carrier and check whether Wi-Fi Calling is supported and enabled. |
Troubleshoot messages that will not send or arrive
- Check your account and carrier service. Confirm the line is active and in good standing. Samsung says carrier service is a common cause of message-delivery problems; see its message troubleshooting guidance.
- Check Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Calling. Make sure the phone is connected to Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Calling is on, and the feature is supported by both the carrier and device. Verify that the SIM or eSIM has active service.
- Identify the messaging path. If the conversation is using RCS, check that RCS is enabled and available. Follow Google’s RCS troubleshooting and resend options if it is stuck or cannot send.
- Contact the carrier if the checks do not resolve it. Ask whether the line and phone are provisioned for Wi-Fi Calling and whether SMS/MMS can use it on your plan. Samsung directs users to their carrier when service problems persist.
A factory reset is not a good early troubleshooting step: Samsung warns that resetting may not permanently resolve a problem caused by an app issue that needs an update.

To switch, open or install Google Messages, choose Set default SMS app, and select Google Messages. Samsung says existing messages and conversations transfer automatically; the time depends on data volume and may take approximately 24 hours. On devices released before 2022, RCS may be interrupted temporarily and can resume if both participants use Google Messages; SMS/MMS remains available during that interruption. See Samsung’s transition guide.
