The quickest reliable check is to record and replay a sample in Recorder, capture a short video and replay its audio, then make a phone or Meet call and ask how you sound. Repeat the same checks in Safe Mode. Comparing those results shows whether the problem follows one microphone path, one app, an accessory route, or the phone itself.
Why one Pixel microphone test can pass while another fails
Pixel phones contain three identical microphones, but they do not use all three at the same time. The phone selects a microphone path based on the task, so a failure can be selective: Recorder may capture silence while a call remains understandable, or a camera video may have audio while a third-party voice-note app does not. Google explains the arrangement in Learn how your Pixel speakers & microphones work.

The openings and their exact positions vary by Pixel model. Do not assume that the microphone nearest the USB-C port, the top edge, or the camera is the one used by a particular app. Use the hardware diagram for your exact model and keep every opening clear while testing.
A useful test is therefore a comparison, not a single recording. Run the same short spoken sentence through several built-in functions, note exactly which playback or listener fails, and then repeat without downloaded apps running.

Prepare the phone before testing
- Remove anything that can cover an opening. Take off the case, skin, or dust plug temporarily. Hold the phone by its edges so a finger is not over a hole.
- Check mute controls. Look for a muted microphone in the Phone or Meet call screen and in any recorder app. Also check Quick Settings for a system microphone privacy control if your Android version shows one.
- Disconnect audio accessories. Unplug USB-C headphones, adapters, docks, and other wired devices. Turn Bluetooth off for the internal-microphone tests so audio is not being routed to a headset.
- Check the affected app’s permission. Open Settings, choose Apps, select the app, tap Permissions, choose Microphone, and allow it while the app is in use. Labels can differ slightly by Android release.
- Inspect, do not probe. If you can see lint, use a soft, dry brush with light strokes. Never push a pin, paper clip, liquid, compressed-air nozzle, or other object into a microphone opening.
- Use a quiet room. Keep the phone at a normal speaking distance and say the same sentence at a normal volume for each test. Loudspeaker playback can make a recording seem better than it is, so use headphones or a low speaker volume when checking subtle distortion.
These precautions prevent a case, a blocked port, a muted control, or external routing from masquerading as a failed microphone.
Run the three-part built-in microphone test
Do these tests in order and write down the result for each one. Save every recording until you have compared them; a file that sounds silent in the phone’s player may still contain useful information when replayed with headphones.
1. Record and replay in Recorder
- Open the built-in Recorder app.
- Tap the record button and speak one short sentence, such as a count from one to ten, for about 10 seconds.
- Stop and save the recording with a recognizable name.
- Play it back through the phone speaker, then with headphones if available.
- Note whether the waveform or level indicator moved while you spoke, whether the file contains clear speech, and whether it is silent, very quiet, crackling, or intermittent.
A clean Recorder file establishes that the microphone path chosen for that recording function can capture your voice. It does not prove that the paths used by calls or the camera are healthy.
2. Record a camera video and replay its audio
- Open Camera and select the normal video mode.
- Record yourself speaking for roughly 10 seconds. Keep the phone in the same orientation for the first attempt; if you normally use the front camera, make a second short clip with that camera.
- Stop recording and open the clip in Google Photos or the phone’s video viewer.
- Listen for speech, dropouts, rubbing noise, or a constant hiss.
Use the video result as a separate data point. A camera clip with sound does not demonstrate that all three Pixel microphones work, because the camera may select a different input from Recorder or a call.

3. Make a phone or Meet call
- Call someone you trust, or start a Meet call with a participant who can give immediate feedback.
- Ask the other person to describe your voice: clear, faint, distorted, cutting in and out, or completely absent.
- Repeat briefly with speakerphone on and off, but keep Bluetooth disconnected for the baseline test.
- If the call app has a microphone meter or self-test, observe it without treating the meter alone as proof; the listener’s report is the important result.
Google documents a Recorder-and-playback plus Meet-call pattern for Pixel Tablet in Fix Pixel Tablet microphone issues. The same cross-app comparison is useful on a Pixel phone because different tasks can select different microphones.
Record the results in one table
| Test | What passed or failed | What the result suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Recorder playback | Speech is clear, faint, intermittent, or silent | The recording path used by Recorder is working or is suspect. |
| Camera video playback | Video audio is clear or missing | The camera-selected path can be compared with Recorder without assuming they share a microphone. |
| Phone or Meet call | The listener hears you normally or not at all | The call path, call permissions, routing, or its selected microphone needs attention. |
| All three | Every test fails | An obstruction, routing problem, system fault, or hardware failure becomes more plausible, especially after Safe Mode. |
Repeat the tests in Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Android with downloaded apps disabled. It is the cleanest way to check whether an app that was installed or updated recently is intercepting audio, adding a call filter, or changing permissions.
Pixel 6 and later
- Press and hold Power + Volume Up until the power menu appears.
- Touch and hold Power off or Restart.
- When the Safe Mode prompt appears, tap OK. A Safe Mode label appears on screen after the phone restarts.
- Run the Recorder, camera, and call tests again. Keep the case off and Bluetooth disconnected so the comparison is fair.
- Restart normally when finished to leave Safe Mode.
Google’s instructions, including the procedure for older Pixel generations, are in Find problem apps by rebooting to safe mode. Older Pixels use a power-button procedure rather than the Power-plus-Volume-Up sequence above.

- The microphone works in Safe Mode but not normally: a downloaded app is likely involved. Remove or disable recently installed call recorders, voice changers, accessibility tools, security filters, or audio-routing utilities one at a time, restarting after each change.
- The same test fails in both modes: a downloaded app is less likely. Continue with permissions, routing, physical inspection, and built-in diagnostics instead of repeatedly reinstalling unrelated apps.
- Only one third-party app fails in both modes: Safe Mode does not run that app, so compare it directly with Recorder and Camera after returning to normal mode. Check its permission, update it, and reinstall it if necessary.
Use Pixel’s built-in support and diagnostics
On Pixel 6 and later, open Settings → Device health & support. This area can show device status, available diagnostics, warranty information, support choices, and repair options. Google says most diagnostics are available on Pixel 6 and later, but the individual checks shown can vary by model and region. If an audio or microphone check is offered, run it with accessories removed and record the name of any failed check.

- Custom three-capsule array: This professional USB mic produces clear, powerful, broadcast-quality sound for YouTube videos, Twitch game streaming, podcasting, Zoom meetings, music recording and more
- Blue VO!CE software: Elevate your streamings and recordings with clear broadcast vocal sound and entertain your audience with enhanced effects, advanced modulation and HD audio samples
- Four pickup patterns: Flexible cardioid, omni, bidirectional, and stereo pickup patterns allow you to record in ways that would normally require multiple mics, for vocals, instruments and podcasts
- Onboard audio controls: Headphone volume, pattern selection, instant mute, and mic gain put you in charge of every level of the audio recording and streaming process
- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
Diagnostics are valuable because they test a phone function outside the app that first exposed the problem. They are not a guarantee that every microphone path has been exercised; a passing check should be compared with the Recorder, camera, and call results rather than used to dismiss a clear, repeatable failure.
Optional community-reported dialer diagnostic code
A Google Pixel Community discussion reports the code *#*#7287#*#* and individual microphone tests in a diagnostic tool. The official Google help pages do not establish that this code is universal, current, or available on every Pixel model, carrier, or region. Treat it as an optional community-reported route, not an official requirement.
- Only try the code if you are comfortable using a diagnostic menu and have backed up anything important.
- Open the Phone app and enter
*#*#7287#*#*. Do not press call unless the phone’s interface requires it; some service codes open automatically. - If a diagnostic screen appears, choose the audio or microphone checks one at a time.
- Write down which individual test fails and exit without changing unrelated service settings.
If nothing opens, do not infer a hardware failure. Availability can differ by software build and region. The community report is at Microphone does not work for voice recording.

Recorder fails, while calls and camera audio work
Start with the Recorder permission and a case or lint obstruction near the opening used for recording. Test Recorder in Safe Mode and replay through headphones. If the same file is silent in Safe Mode while the other two functions remain clear, the Recorder-selected microphone path or the phone’s audio software is suspect. Use Device health & support if available rather than assuming the microphone nearest the bottom edge is the culprit; the exact assignment differs by model.

Calls fail, while Recorder and camera work
Check the call screen’s mute button, Phone or Meet microphone permission, Bluetooth status, and any USB-C accessory. Make a second call in a different calling app. If both call apps fail but local recordings remain clear, concentrate on call routing, account or app behavior, and network-side call features before treating the internal microphone as defective.
Camera audio fails, while Recorder and calls work
Repeat with the rear and front cameras, because camera modes can use different processing and input choices. Confirm Camera has microphone permission, remove the case, and test in Safe Mode. A camera-only failure points first to the Camera app or its selected path; it does not identify a physical microphone by position.
All three fail, including Safe Mode
When Recorder, camera, and calls all fail with downloaded apps disabled, inspect for blockage and disconnect every accessory once more. USB-C audio routing, system corruption, or hardware failure becomes more likely. Run any available Device health & support check and prepare the exact test results for Google support instead of changing many settings at random.

Use Recorder and Camera as controls. In the affected app, verify the microphone permission, update it through Google Play, force-close and reopen it, and reinstall it if the problem continues. If built-in apps work in normal mode and Safe Mode, the phone hardware is unlikely to be the immediate cause.

Check accessories and USB-C audio routing
A wired headset or USB-C adapter can make the phone select an external input. Disconnect it before every internal test. As an optional comparison, connect a USB-C headset with a microphone and record a short sample, then disconnect it and repeat with the phone’s internal microphones.
If the headset recording works while internal tests fail, that is an accessory-path clue, not proof that every internal microphone is healthy. If the headset is not detected, do not conclude that the phone’s microphone is broken; compatibility, the adapter, or the headset itself may be responsible. A Pixel Community case describes USB-C adapter and headset routing symptoms, but it is not an official universal compatibility guarantee.
When to escalate to Google support or repair
Use Settings → Device health & support on Pixel 6 and later to review warranty information and available support or repair options. Eligibility and repair availability depend on the model, country, and warranty terms. For older Pixels, use Google’s support page or the support route offered in your device settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore contacting support, collect:
- The exact Pixel model and Android version.
- Which of Recorder, Camera, phone calls, and Meet failed.
- Whether each test passed or failed in Safe Mode.
- Any Device health & support diagnostic name and result.
- Whether removing the case, disabling Bluetooth, or disconnecting USB-C accessories changed the outcome.
- A description of the sound: silence, low volume, distortion, crackling, or dropouts.
Do not keep inserting objects into microphone holes or repeatedly changing unrelated settings. If the failure survives Safe Mode and the built-in checks report a failed microphone, support can determine whether cleaning, software recovery, or repair is appropriate. Google’s general support guidance is at Get help for issues on your Pixel phone.
A compact decision checklist
- Remove the case, disconnect Bluetooth and USB-C audio, check mute controls, and confirm the affected app’s microphone permission.
- Run and save a Recorder sample.
- Record and replay a Camera video, trying both camera directions if relevant.
- Make a phone or Meet call and ask the listener for a specific description.
- Repeat the same three tests in Safe Mode.
- On Pixel 6 or later, review Settings → Device health & support and run any offered microphone check.
- Use the community-reported dialer code only as an optional, non-universal check.
- Escalate with your test log when failures persist across apps and Safe Mode.
This sequence tells you whether the symptom belongs to one app, one task-specific microphone path, an external route, or the phone’s hardware without guessing from microphone location alone.
