How to Test Your NBN Speed and Understand the Results: A Practical 2026 Guide

The most useful NBN speed check is a controlled comparison: test a computer connected to your modem by Ethernet, repeat the same test over Wi-Fi, and run both during a busy evening and a quieter period. Record download, upload, latency, jitter and packet loss each time. A wired result that is close to your plan while Wi-Fi is much slower points to your home network; consistently poor wired results are a reason to contact your retail internet provider.

A speed test is only a snapshot of the complete path between your device and a test server. It includes your device, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, modem, retail provider network, the NBN access network and the test server. It cannot, by itself, identify which part is responsible for a low result.

What an NBN speed test actually measures

A browser-based test transfers data between your device and a measurement server, then reports how that exchange performed at that moment. The result reflects the end-to-end connection, not an isolated measurement of the NBN wholesale access network. Your plan, access technology and premises configuration, modem, computer, software, Wi-Fi conditions, provider network design, other household traffic and the server route can all affect the numbers.

That is why one unusually low result is not proof of a line fault. Repeating the test under controlled conditions helps separate a persistent service problem from a temporary Wi-Fi or household-usage issue.

Prepare a test that you can compare

Use the same device and test service

A laptop or desktop with an Ethernet port is the best starting point. Use the same computer and, where possible, the same browser test service for every run. Changing devices or test sites between runs introduces differences in hardware, software and server location that make the results harder to compare. NBN consumer guidance does not require one universal commercial test site.

Pause competing activity

Stop or pause video streams, cloud backups, game downloads, operating-system updates and large file transfers. Ask other household members to avoid heavy use for the short duration of each test. Record anything you could not stop, because simultaneous devices can reduce the capacity available to the test device.

Record the conditions

Create a simple log with the date, exact time, connection type, room, device, download speed, upload speed, latency, jitter and packet loss. Also note whether other people were using the connection and whether the test was during the evening busy period. The context is as important as the headline download number when you discuss results with a provider.

Run the wired baseline

  1. Connect the computer directly to a LAN port on the modem or router with an Ethernet cable. A cable is a testing aid; it does not increase the speed included in your NBN plan.
  2. Temporarily limit other household internet activity.
  3. Open your chosen browser speed-test service and run one complete test.
  4. Record the displayed download, upload, latency, jitter and packet-loss values, along with the time and the fact that the connection was wired.
  5. Run a second test after a short pause. Large differences between two otherwise identical wired runs are themselves useful evidence of variation.

This wired result is your best practical baseline because it removes most of the radio interference, distance and wall-penetration variables that affect Wi-Fi. It still includes the modem, computer, provider network, NBN access network and test server, so it is not a laboratory measurement of line capability.

Compare Wi-Fi in the places you use it

  1. Disconnect the Ethernet cable and connect the same computer to your normal Wi-Fi network.
  2. First test in the same room as the modem or router. Keeping the location constant makes the wired-versus-wireless comparison more meaningful.
  3. Repeat in the rooms where you notice slow streaming, calls or browsing. Record the room for every run.
  4. Keep other household activity and the test service the same as for the wired baseline.

A large drop from Ethernet to nearby Wi-Fi, or a sharp decline in one room, points toward coverage, interference, device capability or router placement rather than proving that the NBN service is slow. Wi-Fi is a shared radio medium: walls, distance, competing networks, appliances and simultaneous devices can all change its performance. If Wi-Fi and Ethernet are both poor in the same conditions, investigate the provider service and other equipment as well as wireless coverage.

Test at busy and quiet times

Run the wired and Wi-Fi checks at more than one time of day. NBN uses 7pm–11pm as an example of a busy period in its consumer guidance; treat that as a comparison window, not a promise that every household or provider reaches its maximum load at exactly those hours. Add an off-peak run, such as a quiet daytime or late-night period, while keeping the device, test service and test location consistent.

A repeatable evening slowdown can indicate congestion somewhere in the path, but timing alone cannot tell you whether the constraint is inside your home, in the retail provider’s network, on the access network or beyond it. A quiet-period result that is also low on Ethernet is more significant than an isolated low Wi-Fi result during a busy household.

Understand every number in the result

Metric What it measures Why it matters
Download (Mbps) How quickly data travels from the test server to your device. Important for receiving files and much streaming activity.
Upload (Mbps) How quickly data travels from your device to the test server. Important for sending files, cloud backups and video calls.
Latency (ms) The round-trip time for a packet to reach the test server and return. Lower values generally make interactive applications feel more responsive; the server and route also affect it.
Jitter (ms) How much latency varies from packet to packet. Greater variation can make voice, video and interactive applications inconsistent.
Packet loss (%) The share of sent packets that do not arrive. Higher loss can interrupt conferencing, gaming and other real-time traffic.
Webpage loading time A combined measure influenced by download speed, latency and DNS in the ACCC methodology. Can resemble ordinary browsing more closely than a raw transfer rate alone.

Do not judge the connection from download alone

A high download rate can coexist with poor video calls if latency, jitter or packet loss is elevated. Conversely, a modest download result may still support ordinary browsing if responsiveness and stability are good. Match the metric to the problem you are trying to solve: upload for backups, latency and jitter for interactive games, packet loss for dropped calls, and webpage loading time for a browsing complaint.

Use the comparison to locate the likely problem

Observed pattern Most useful next step What the pattern does not prove
Ethernet is consistently close to expected plan performance, but Wi-Fi is much slower. Check router placement, distance, walls, interference, device capability and other wireless users. It does not prove the NBN access service is faultless everywhere.
Wi-Fi is good beside the router but poor in one or more rooms. Investigate coverage and interference in those rooms; compare results at each location. It does not identify one specific cause without changing conditions one at a time.
Ethernet and Wi-Fi are both low, including during a quiet period. Repeat the wired test, check the plan and equipment, then contact the retail provider with your log. It does not by itself distinguish the NBN access network from the provider network or modem.
Results fall mainly during the evening busy period. Supply wired and off-peak comparisons to the provider and ask about expected busy-period performance. It does not establish where congestion occurs.
Download is adequate but calls or games remain unreliable. Examine latency, jitter and packet loss, preferably on Ethernet, and document the affected application and time. A download figure alone cannot clear the connection for real-time use.

Check the plan and equipment before escalating

Compare the result with the speed tier you pay for, remembering that a plan label is not a guarantee that every device will achieve that rate over Wi-Fi. NBN says achieved speeds depend on the access technology and configuration at the premises, whether use occurs during a busy period, equipment quality, software, the plan, signal reception and how the retail provider designs its network.

  • Confirm that the Ethernet cable is firmly connected and that the computer is actually using the wired interface rather than Wi-Fi.
  • Restart the modem or router only if needed, then allow it to reconnect fully before repeating a controlled test.
  • Close applications that may be uploading or downloading in the background.
  • Check whether the problem is limited to one device. A single older computer can be the bottleneck even when another device tests normally.
  • For Wi-Fi, move the test device closer to the router and compare again; do not treat the closer result as representative of distant rooms.

Change one condition at a time and keep notes. Replacing several settings or devices simultaneously makes it difficult to know which change affected the result.

When and how to contact your retail provider

NBN operates as a wholesaler and directs customers to their retail provider for retail service questions. Contact that provider when wired results remain unexpectedly low, when the issue persists across different times, or when latency, jitter or packet loss continues to disrupt the service.

Ask what performance is expected during busy periods, whether there are known service limitations, and what further isolation steps the provider needs. A provider can investigate account, equipment and service information that a public speed test cannot see.

Put published NBN performance figures in context

The ACCC’s Measuring Broadband Australia program reported that Australian fixed-line NBN households achieved 99.4 per cent of their plan download speed on average during the peak evening period in its final 2026 result. That figure is population-level evidence from monitored households, not a promise for an individual address or plan.

The program ran from early 2018 until June 2026, used volunteer households and Whitebox measurement devices, and its final performance report was released on 17 June 2026. Because the program ended, its figures should be dated historical context rather than treated as an ongoing monitoring service. Your own controlled Ethernet and Wi-Fi comparisons remain more relevant to a fault affecting your home.

Common testing mistakes

Testing only on Wi-Fi

A Wi-Fi-only result cannot tell you whether the access service or the wireless path is limiting performance. Add an Ethernet baseline whenever your equipment allows it.

Running one test and treating it as a diagnosis

One result is a snapshot. Repeat it, use consistent conditions and compare time periods before drawing a conclusion.

Leaving streaming or backups running

Other traffic competes with the test and can reduce both download and upload readings. Pause it or document it as part of the test conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Focusing on the largest number

Download speed may look healthy while latency, jitter or packet loss explains a call or gaming problem. Record all displayed metrics.

Assuming an evening slowdown has one obvious cause

Busy-period variation can involve household use, provider network design or other parts of the route. Timing is evidence of a pattern, not a location diagnosis.

A repeatable NBN speed-test checklist

  1. Choose one Ethernet-capable computer and one browser test service.
  2. Pause heavy household use and note anything that remains active.
  3. Run and record two Ethernet tests beside the modem or router.
  4. Run Wi-Fi tests in the same room, then in the rooms where performance matters.
  5. Repeat the comparison during an evening busy window and an off-peak window.
  6. Compare wired versus Wi-Fi, room-to-room and busy versus quiet results.
  7. Look at upload, latency, jitter and packet loss as well as download.
  8. If wired results remain low or the problem persists, give the complete log to your retail provider.

As nbn’s Ray Owen wrote in an article updated 28 November 2022, speed tests are “a great way to inform any conversations you might be having with your retailer about a) your connection and b) what your needs might be for more or less speed.” Used with consistent conditions and a wired comparison, the test becomes evidence you can act on rather than just a number on a screen.
