The most useful NBN speed test is a repeatable comparison, not a single number. First test a computer over Ethernet, record download and upload speeds with the time and date, then repeat in the morning, afternoon and 7–11 pm evening busy period. Run the same test beside your router and in the rooms where the connection feels slow. A wired result that is consistently poor points toward your plan, provider or NBN service; a large gap between wired and Wi-Fi results points toward your home network.
This method gives your retail internet provider evidence they can act on. It also prevents a common mistake: blaming NBN when a distant room, an old router, a busy household or a single congested Wi-Fi channel is limiting the result.

What an NBN speed test can—and cannot—tell you
A speed test measures the path between one device and a test server at one moment. The result is affected by your NBN access technology, the retail plan, your provider’s network, the router, Wi-Fi conditions, the device’s hardware and software, signal reception, and other people using the connection. It is evidence, not automatic proof of a network fault.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

- Wired and Wi-Fi: Ethernet provides a baseline with fewer radio and coverage variables.
- Beside the router and room by room: differences expose coverage or interference problems.
- Morning, afternoon and evening: a recurring 7–11 pm slowdown may be a busy-period pattern.
- Download and upload: a service can perform well in one direction and poorly in the other.
- Your result and your plan’s typical busy-period speed: compare like with like, including the test time and method.
Keep the test device, test service and conditions as consistent as possible. Change one variable at a time and save screenshots or a written log. A provider can investigate a pattern; it cannot do much with “the internet felt slow once.”

Before testing: prepare a controlled baseline
Use Ethernet when your equipment supports it
Connect a computer, or another compatible device, directly to your router with an Ethernet cable. If your NBN setup uses a separate connection box, connect the router as normal and cable the device to the router’s LAN port. Wired testing is NBN’s preferred way to establish a baseline because it avoids many Wi-Fi limitations.
Use your provider’s speed-test dashboard or a reputable browser or app test. Close large downloads, cloud backups, game updates and video streams on the test device. Ask other household members to pause high-data activity for the few minutes needed to measure. The purpose is not to create an artificial “best ever” result; it is to keep the conditions known and repeatable.
Record the details, not just the headline number
For every run, write down:
- date and exact time;
- download speed in Mbps;
- upload speed in Mbps;
- whether the device used Ethernet or Wi-Fi;
- the device and test service used;
- where the device was located;
- whether a VPN, streaming, downloads or other heavy usage was active; and
- any dropouts, buffering or failed tests.
A screenshot preserves the displayed result, but a log explains the conditions. If you contact your provider, offer the complete set rather than selecting only the worst reading.

- Connect by Ethernet. Use a computer or compatible device cabled to the router. Check that the device has joined the wired connection rather than Wi-Fi.
- Run the same test twice. Allow the first test to finish, wait briefly, and repeat without changing anything. Record both download and upload values.
- Save the time and method. Note the date, time, device, test service and whether other household traffic was paused.
- Repeat at three parts of the day. Test in the morning, afternoon and evening. If your problem is mainly at night, make the evening run during the 7–11 pm busy period and make an off-peak comparison at a similar quiet time on another run.
- Run the Wi-Fi comparison beside the router. On the same device and test service, disconnect Ethernet and test over Wi-Fi while standing close to the router. Record the result separately.
- Test the problem rooms. Walk to the rooms where you notice slow browsing, buffering or dropouts. Keep the device orientation and test service as consistent as practical, and record each location.
- Repeat an unusual result. A single spike or dip is not enough to identify a cause. Re-run the test after checking that no device has started a download or update.
NBN’s Fixed Wireless troubleshooting guidance notes that speed tests consume data. If your plan has a data allowance or your connection is metered, account for that before running many tests.
How to read the results
Wired is high, Wi-Fi is low
This pattern usually makes the home wireless link the first area to investigate. Check the router’s age and Wi-Fi standard, the test device’s wireless capability, router placement, walls and floors between rooms, nearby appliances and competing networks. Do not conclude that a faster plan will fix a radio-coverage problem.
Wi-Fi beside the router is good, but distant rooms are poor
A strong result next to the router followed by a steep room-to-room decline indicates coverage, obstruction or interference. NBN recommends an uncluttered, central router position. In a large or multi-storey home, a properly configured mesh system can extend coverage, but it cannot raise a low wired speed delivered to the router.
Wired and Wi-Fi are both low
When a wired test is consistently below the plan’s expected busy-period performance, home Wi-Fi is less likely to be the primary limitation. Check the plan speed, the test time, the router and connection-box status, and any active household traffic. If the wired shortfall persists across repeated tests, ask the retail provider to investigate the service.

Results are good in the morning and poor in the evening
A repeatable evening pattern may reflect busy-period demand or a provider-network issue. Compare a wired evening test with a wired off-peak test; do not base the conclusion on a Wi-Fi reading from one room. Tell the provider the exact times, values and access method.
Upload is poor while download is normal
Separate upload trouble can affect video calls, cloud backups and sending large files even when web pages appear normal. Record both directions and report the asymmetry. It may be a service profile, equipment or network issue rather than a general “slow internet” problem.
Understanding NBN plan speed labels
Australian providers are expected to show a plan’s typical speed during the evening busy period, defined in the ACCC guidance as 7 pm to 11 pm. The labels provide context for comparing plans:
| ACCC evening-speed label | Typical busy-period threshold | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Evening Speed | Less than 15 Mbps | Compare a wired 7–11 pm result with the plan’s stated typical level. |
| Standard Evening Speed | At least 15 Mbps | Use the threshold as plan context, not a promise for every device. |
| Standard Plus Evening Speed | At least 30 Mbps | Check the test method, time and household usage before judging performance. |
| Premium Evening Speed | At least 60 Mbps | A Wi-Fi result in a distant room may still be lower than the service delivered to the router. |
These labels describe typical busy-period plan performance. They do not guarantee that every household device, Wi-Fi location or test server will show the threshold. Customer-premises equipment and the home setup can reduce the speed received at a device.
The ACCC’s Measuring Broadband Australia release of 2 April 2026 reported that, in December 2025, average download speeds on NBN fixed-line services reached 98.5 per cent of plan speeds during weekday busy hours. That is a population-level average for fixed-line services, not a pass/fail rule for an individual connection and not a statistic for every NBN access technology. ACCC Commissioner Ian Oppermann said the result was “still encouraging to see Australians on NBN fixed-line connections typically receive the speeds they have paid for.”
Check the home setup before escalating
Router position and obstructions
Place the router in an open, central location rather than inside a cabinet, behind furniture or at the edge of the home. Walls, floors, large furniture and some appliances can weaken or scatter the signal. A central position reduces the distance to more rooms.
Router and device capability
Older routers and older phones, tablets or laptops may not support the wireless performance of a newer plan. Check whether the slow test device is the limiting factor by comparing a second, reasonably recent device under the same conditions. This comparison does not prove a fault, but it can reveal a device-specific ceiling.

Ethernet for demanding fixed activities
For a television, desktop computer, gaming console or work computer that stays near the router, Ethernet can provide a more stable connection for high-data activity. It does not upgrade the NBN service; it simply removes a Wi-Fi variable.
Mesh for coverage gaps
A mesh system is relevant when the wired baseline is healthy, the result beside the router is strong and distant rooms remain weak. Position mesh nodes where they still receive a good signal from the main router or preceding node. Adding nodes to a poor location can extend a weak connection rather than create a fast one. If every wired test is low, investigate the plan or provider before buying coverage equipment.
Connected devices and background traffic
List phones, televisions, cameras, smart-home equipment, computers and consoles currently connected. Temporarily pause large downloads, backups, updates and high-resolution streams, then repeat the test. A busy household can consume available capacity without any NBN fault.
VPNs, software and the selected network
A VPN can add a slower route or encryption overhead. If you use one, turn it off temporarily and retest, then restore it afterward. Confirm that the device is connected to your intended home Wi-Fi network rather than a guest network or a nearby saved network. Malware or an unwanted background process can also generate traffic; use your device’s normal security tools to check if unusual activity is suspected.
Weather and equipment issues on Fixed Wireless
NBN’s Fixed Wireless troubleshooting path includes severe weather, signal conditions, equipment faults and installation issues among possible causes. Those examples are specific to the Fixed Wireless guidance and should not be treated as a diagnosis for every NBN technology. If weather coincides with dropouts, record the timing and tell your provider.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy NBN can feel slower at night
Night-time slowdown has several possible explanations. More people may be using your household connection; Wi-Fi networks in nearby homes may be busier; a particular room may have marginal coverage; or demand on the provider’s network may affect the service. A single evening Wi-Fi result cannot distinguish these causes.
Use two controlled comparisons:
- Run Ethernet tests in the morning or afternoon and again between 7 pm and 11 pm.
- At each time, note household usage and retain download and upload values.
If only Wi-Fi changes, focus on the router, channel conditions, device and coverage. If wired results also fall repeatedly in the evening, provide that time-of-day pattern to the retail provider. The provider can determine whether the plan, its network or the NBN access service needs investigation.

Check outages and contact the right organisation
Check NBN network status or planned-outage information where it applies to your service. A planned maintenance event or known outage can explain a temporary result. Some satellite and enterprise services are not covered by the public NBN network-status page; those customers should contact their provider first.
Your retail internet provider is the customer-facing organisation responsible for troubleshooting your service. NBN’s customer guidance says to contact the provider about service issues such as dropouts and poor speeds. The provider can run additional checks and, when appropriate, lodge a fault with NBN.
What to give the provider
- your plan name and advertised typical evening speed;
- the NBN access technology if you know it;
- the exact test dates and times;
- wired download and upload results;
- Wi-Fi results beside the router and in affected rooms;
- the device and test service used;
- whether a VPN or heavy household usage was active;
- dropout times, modem or connection-box lights and any outage notice; and
- screenshots or the complete test log.
Describe the pattern precisely: for example, “Ethernet download is repeatedly low between 8 pm and 10 pm, while morning tests are substantially higher,” rather than “Wi-Fi is bad.” Ask what further test they need and whether they can investigate or lodge a network fault.
A practical decision tree
- Is the wired result consistently close to the plan’s typical busy-period speed? If yes, the NBN service may be delivering as expected; investigate Wi-Fi, device capability and household usage if the experience is still poor.
- Is Wi-Fi much lower than wired beside the router? Check router placement, wireless settings, device capability, interference and competing traffic.
- Is Wi-Fi good beside the router but poor in specific rooms? Treat it as a coverage problem. Improve placement or consider mesh for a large or multi-storey home.
- Are wired results poor at several times or accompanied by dropouts? Check for an outage, then contact the retail provider with your log.
- Are wired results poor only during 7–11 pm? Supply the repeated peak-versus-off-peak comparison and ask the provider to assess busy-period performance.
- Is the issue limited to one device? Compare another device, inspect that device’s Wi-Fi capability and software, and avoid declaring the service faulty until the comparison is complete.
Common testing mistakes
- Testing only over Wi-Fi: a weak room signal can masquerade as a slow NBN service.
- Testing once: one result cannot reveal a time-of-day pattern or distinguish a transient event.
- Changing several variables: switching device, room, test service and router at once makes the result hard to interpret.
- Ignoring upload: poor upload can explain calls, backups and file transfers even when downloads look acceptable.
- Comparing different times with different usage: record whether anyone was streaming, gaming or downloading.
- Assuming a new router fixes everything: it may improve coverage but cannot correct a low wired service caused by the plan, provider or network.
- Using a plan label as a guarantee: evening-speed categories are typical performance guidance, not a promise for every device and room.
When replacement equipment is justified
Buy or configure equipment only after the comparisons identify a home-network limitation. An Ethernet cable is useful for the baseline and for stable connections to nearby fixed devices; it does not increase the NBN service speed. A mesh system is reasonable when room-to-room tests show a coverage decline in a larger or multi-storey home and the wired result is healthy. Neither choice substitutes for provider troubleshooting when Ethernet tests remain poor.
FAQ
How do I test my NBN speed?
Connect a compatible computer to your router with Ethernet, run a consistent speed test, record download, upload, date and time, and repeat in the morning, afternoon and 7–11 pm evening period. Then compare Wi-Fi beside the router and in the rooms where performance is poor.
Why is my NBN speed slower at night?
Night results can be affected by household usage, busier local Wi-Fi conditions or provider-network demand. Repeat wired tests during and outside 7–11 pm and give the complete comparison to your retail provider.

How can I tell whether the problem is Wi-Fi or NBN?
Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi on the same device and test service. A large Wi-Fi shortfall, especially one that grows in distant rooms, points to the home wireless setup. Consistently low Ethernet results point toward the plan, provider or service and merit escalation.

Will a faster router fix a slow NBN connection?
Only if the router or its wireless coverage is the limiting factor. It cannot fix a low wired speed caused by the plan, provider network, NBN service, an outage or a faulty connection-box installation.
Who do I contact about poor speeds or dropouts?
Contact the retail internet provider that bills you. It can troubleshoot the service and lodge a fault with NBN when the evidence indicates a network issue. Satellite and enterprise customers should contact their provider first for status information not shown on the public NBN status page.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I repeat an NBN speed test?
Repeat at least twice under the same conditions and at different parts of the day when investigating a pattern. More readings are useful only when you continue recording the time, method and household activity.
Should I test with a phone or laptop?
Use a device that supports Ethernet for the baseline when possible, then use the same device for Wi-Fi comparisons. A second device can reveal whether the problem is limited to one device’s hardware or software.
What information will make a provider fault report stronger?
Provide a dated log with wired and Wi-Fi download/upload results, test times, locations, device and test service, evening-versus-off-peak comparisons, dropout times and any outage information.
The Bottom Line
Establish a wired baseline, repeat it across the day, and compare it with Wi-Fi beside the router and in affected rooms. That evidence separates coverage and device problems from persistent service underperformance. If Ethernet results remain poor or dropouts continue, your retail provider is the right place to request a formal investigation.
