Test IPv6 in layers: inspect the active adapter, run a browser test that distinguishes IPv4 from IPv6, then force an IPv6 ping or route trace if the result is unclear. An IPv6 address on your device proves configuration, not end-to-end internet reachability; a successful test proves access to one destination at that moment, not that every site or application will use IPv6.
What a useful IPv6 test must prove
“IPv6 is working” can mean several different things. Your computer may have an IPv6 address but no usable route beyond the local network. A browser may reach a dual-stack website over IPv4 while IPv6 is unavailable. A hostname may resolve only to IPv4 even though a direct IPv6 address is reachable. Conversely, a ping can time out because an endpoint or firewall filters ICMP, while normal web traffic still works.

A reliable check therefore exercises progressively wider parts of the connection:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Local configuration: the active Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter has IPv6 addressing and a gateway.
- Browser reachability: a browser can connect to IPv6-only and dual-stack destinations.
- Address-family selection: a command explicitly uses IPv6 rather than silently falling back to IPv4.
- Routing: an IPv6 trace shows whether packets progress through the path.
- Packet size: larger transfers work, ruling out a path maximum-transmission-unit problem.
Use the first test that answers your question, then move to the next only when you need more diagnostic detail. Do not treat one timeout as proof that the entire network has no IPv6.

Choose the test that matches the question
| Test | What it exercises | What a result tells you | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
ipconfig or ipconfig /all (Windows) |
Local interface and TCP/IP configuration | Whether the active adapter has IPv6 addresses and a default gateway | Shows configuration, not reachability to the public internet |
| Browser test at test-ipv6.com | Browser connection to IPv4-only, IPv6-only and dual-stack destinations | Whether the browser can actually use IPv6 and how it compares with IPv4 | Results depend on the destination, browser and network at test time |
ping -6 (Windows) |
ICMPv6 reachability to a hostname or address | Whether an IPv6 echo request reaches that target and receives a reply | Firewalls or endpoint policy can block echo replies |
tracert -6 (Windows) |
IPv6 route, hop by hop | Where an IPv6 path stops or becomes slow | Some routers do not answer trace probes, so gaps are not automatically failures |
| Large-packet browser checks | Path packet size and IPv6 packet-too-big handling | Whether basic IPv6 works for larger transfers | A failure suggests further MTU investigation; it does not identify a faulty device by itself |
Step 1: Inspect the active device configuration
Windows command prompt
Open Command Prompt and run:
ipconfig
This displays IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, subnet masks and default gateways for each adapter. Identify the adapter that is actually carrying traffic: normally the connected Wi-Fi interface or the plugged-in Ethernet interface. Ignore disconnected virtual adapters, old VPN interfaces and unused network cards when interpreting the output.
For the complete TCP/IP configuration, run:
ipconfig /all
The expanded output includes additional address, DNS and DHCP information. Check that the active adapter has an IPv6 address and an IPv6 default gateway, rather than looking only at an inactive interface. An address shown here is useful evidence that the host received IPv6 configuration, but it does not establish that packets can reach an internet destination.
Interpreting addresses without overclaiming
Do not conclude that IPv6 is fully operational merely because an address appears. The address may be usable only on the local segment, the gateway may not provide an upstream route, or the destination may be unreachable. Conversely, an unusual-looking address or a missing response from one command does not prove that every IPv6 function is broken. Use the browser test next to test an actual application path.
Other operating systems
The commands above are Windows examples and should not be copied as universal macOS or Linux syntax. On another operating system, inspect the connected interface in its network settings or use that system’s own IPv6 address and route tools. The important checks are the same: look at the interface that is in use, confirm IPv6 addressing and a gateway, and then test an external IPv6 destination. The browser-based test is the most portable part of this procedure.
Step 2: Run a browser test that separates IPv4 from IPv6
Open test-ipv6.com in the browser you want to evaluate. Its test sequence checks IPv4-only, IPv6-only and dual-stack DNS records and includes large-packet checks. A dual-stack destination publishes both an IPv4 and an IPv6 address; a successful page load can therefore use IPv4 even when IPv6 is unavailable. The IPv6-only check removes that fallback and asks whether the browser can reach a destination that has no IPv4 alternative.
Read the individual checks instead of relying only on an overall score. The most informative pattern is:

- IPv6-only passes: this browser reached the test destination over IPv6 at that time.
- Dual-stack passes but IPv6-only fails: the browser has a working IPv4 path, while no usable IPv6 path to that IPv6-only test endpoint was demonstrated.
- Both IPv6-only and dual-stack fail: first verify that the browser has internet access at all, then inspect local addressing and try the command-line checks.
- IPv4-only passes while IPv6-only fails: this confirms the test page can reach IPv4 but does not establish IPv6 connectivity.
The page uses JavaScript and cross-site scripts for its full test. If those are disabled by the browser or an extension, use its simple pass/fail alternative, understanding that the alternative provides less diagnostic information. Results are a snapshot of the current network, browser and test destination; repeat the check after changing networks or settings.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Step 3: Force an IPv6 ping on Windows
Test a hostname with an explicit IPv6 request
Microsoft documents this form for testing a hostname that resolves to an IPv6 address through DNS or a hosts-file entry:
ping -6 name
Replace name with the hostname you intend to test. The -6 switch matters: it tells Windows to use IPv6 rather than selecting IPv4 when both address families are available. A reply demonstrates IPv6 ICMP reachability to that particular host at that moment.
Test a known global IPv6 address directly
If you have a known global IPv6 address for a destination, ping the address itself. This removes hostname lookup from the first test. A successful address test followed by a failed hostname test points toward name resolution or address-family selection rather than a basic routing failure.
Trace the IPv6 route
To see the route and timing for an IPv6 hostname, run:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchestracert -6 hostname
The trace can show the last responding hop before a destination becomes unreachable and can reveal unusually slow responding hops. Asterisks are not conclusive: intermediate routers often suppress or deprioritize trace probes even while forwarding ordinary traffic. Treat the trace as a clue about the path, not as a complete map of every router.

Step 4: Separate DNS problems from routing problems
Use two tests in a deliberate order when a hostname fails:
- Test a known IPv6 address directly, or test a destination whose AAAA record you have verified.
- Run
ping -6 hostnamefor the corresponding name. - Compare the outcomes with the browser’s IPv6-only result.
If the direct address responds but the name does not, check whether the name has an AAAA record and whether the command is actually using IPv6. Microsoft describes ping as an IP-level connectivity test; success by address combined with failure by name can indicate name-resolution trouble. If neither the address nor the name responds, inspect the interface, gateway and route before changing DNS settings.
A hostname can also publish multiple addresses, and an application may try them in an order that differs from your manual test. That is why a browser result and an explicit IPv6 command complement each other: the browser shows application behavior, while the command shows the selected address family more directly.

Step 5: Interpret timeouts and probe failures carefully
Ping requires an ICMP echo reply. A firewall, router policy or destination host can filter that reply while allowing web traffic. A timed-out ping therefore means “no echo reply was observed,” not necessarily “IPv6 is unusable.” Compare it with the browser’s IPv6-only result and, when needed, the route trace.
Windows’ Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI) performs its own probes. Microsoft Learn’s NCSI troubleshooting guidance states: “The inability of NCSI to complete a probe doesn’t necessarily imply that the client machine can’t access the internet.” Use that warning when a Windows status icon reports limited connectivity: test an actual IPv6-only destination rather than treating the indicator as a definitive outage diagnosis.
Before declaring failure, check whether the test destination is responding to other users, repeat from the same network, and compare IPv4 and IPv6 results. A single remote endpoint can be down or configured not to answer the particular probe.

Step 6: Check for path-MTU problems after basic IPv6 succeeds
Some networks pass small IPv6 tests but fail when a transfer needs larger packets. The large-packet checks on test-ipv6.com are designed to expose that pattern. If ordinary IPv6 checks pass while the large-packet checks fail, investigate path maximum transmission unit (MTU) discovery rather than immediately replacing a router, cable or computer.
IPv6 relies on ICMPv6 “Packet Too Big” messages to tell a sender that a packet must be reduced for a link farther along the path. Filtering those messages can leave a connection that starts successfully but stalls during larger requests. The browser test specifically calls out blocked Packet Too Big handling as one issue to check.
Use tracert -6 to compare the IPv6 path and hop timings, then check firewall and tunnel policies that may filter essential ICMPv6 messages. Keep the conclusion narrow: a large-packet failure identifies a path-size or signaling investigation, not a confirmed faulty component.
Read common result combinations
| Observed results | Most defensible interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No IPv6 details on the active adapter; IPv6-only browser test fails | The host has not shown usable local IPv6 configuration, and public IPv6 reachability was not demonstrated | Recheck the connected adapter, gateway and network service before testing again |
| IPv6 address and gateway appear; IPv6-only browser test passes | The browser reached the test destination over IPv6 | Use the connection normally, while remembering that other destinations can differ |
| Dual-stack browser test passes; IPv6-only test fails | The dual-stack result may have used IPv4; IPv6 to the IPv6-only endpoint was not usable | Run ping -6 and tracert -6, then inspect the IPv6 route |
| Direct IPv6 address responds; hostname test fails | The path works for that address, but AAAA lookup or IPv6 name selection may be failing | Check the hostname’s AAAA record and repeat ping -6 hostname |
| IPv6 ping times out; browser IPv6-only test passes | The destination may filter ICMPv6 echo replies, or the ping target differs from the browser target | Do not call the network broken; compare targets and use the browser result as application evidence |
| Basic checks pass; large-packet check fails | A path-MTU or ICMPv6 Packet Too Big handling issue is possible | Trace the IPv6 route and inspect filtering or tunnel settings |
| NCSI reports a probe failure; websites load | The status probe did not complete, but internet access may still work | Test the specific IPv6 application or destination you care about |
A practical troubleshooting sequence
Follow this order so each result narrows the next question instead of mixing unrelated symptoms:
- Identify the active link. Disconnect or ignore unused adapters when reading the output. On Windows, run
ipconfig /alland record the IPv6 address and gateway shown for the connected Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter. - Run the browser test. Record separate IPv4-only, IPv6-only and dual-stack outcomes, including whether the large-packet check differs from the basic result.
- Check for a fallback explanation. If dual-stack works but IPv6-only fails, do not treat the dual-stack page as proof of IPv6.
- Force the address family. Run
ping -6 nameand, if possible, test a known global IPv6 address directly. - Trace the route. Use
tracert -6 hostnamewhen the ping or browser test fails and you need to locate the point at which the path stops responding. - Separate DNS from transport. Compare direct-address and hostname results. A difference makes AAAA resolution or address selection a priority.
- Check packet size. If only large transfers fail, investigate MTU discovery and whether ICMPv6 Packet Too Big messages are filtered.
- Repeat after a controlled change. Test again after reconnecting the interface or changing networks, and note the time and destination. A passing result is tied to that path and moment.
What each test can and cannot establish
Configuration is not connectivity
An interface address and gateway show that the host has IPv6 parameters. They do not prove that the provider advertises a working route, that return traffic comes back, or that the destination accepts the traffic. Treat configuration as the starting checkpoint.
Recommended Free Tools
A browser result is application evidence
The browser test exercises DNS, the browser’s connection behavior and the network path to its own destinations. It is the closest of these checks to answering “will this browser use IPv6?” It still cannot guarantee that a different website, game, VPN or mail service has equivalent IPv6 support.
Best Value
Ping is narrower but more explicit
An IPv6-forced ping removes ambiguity about address-family selection and gives a direct ICMP reachability signal. It is not a substitute for an application test because ICMP filtering and destination policy can produce a timeout even when other traffic succeeds.
Trace identifies a path symptom, not ownership
A route trace can show where responses stop or become slow, but unresponsive intermediate hops are common. Do not assign blame to the last visible router solely because later hops show asterisks.
When to escalate the problem
Escalate to the network administrator or internet provider when the active adapter has no IPv6 configuration on a service that is expected to provide it, or when multiple independent IPv6 destinations fail while IPv4 works. Provide the adapter output, browser-test pattern, the exact IPv6 command used and the time of testing. Those details distinguish local configuration, DNS, routing and destination filtering more effectively than a statement that “IPv6 is down.”
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf basic IPv6 works but large transfers consistently fail, report the large-packet result and the tracert -6 path. Ask specifically about path MTU and ICMPv6 filtering. Do not purchase replacement hardware merely because one ping or NCSI probe failed; the built-in checks can establish whether a hardware change is warranted.
Minimum evidence for a confident conclusion
- IPv6 is configured locally: the active adapter shows IPv6 addressing and a gateway.
- IPv6 is reachable for the browser: the IPv6-only browser check succeeds.
- IPv6 selection works from Windows: an explicit
ping -6to a suitable hostname or known address receives a reply, when that destination permits ICMPv6. - The route is understood when needed:
tracert -6provides path clues for failures. - Large transfers are healthy: the large-packet check does not show the basic-success/large-failure pattern.
Use the narrowest conclusion supported by those observations. For example, “This Windows browser reached the test-ipv6.com IPv6-only endpoint at 14:00 UTC” is defensible; “Every application on this network has working IPv6” is not.
