The most reliable test is to hold the words constant while changing the sound. Create paired clips with identical transcripts but different emotion, speaker, timing, background events, or spatial position. Ask a question whose answer depends on that changed acoustic evidence, then run the same item with the real audio, silent audio, and transcript-only text. A model that performs just as well on silence or transcript-only input is probably using textual shortcuts rather than listening.
This approach tests whether a system can reason about speech, non-speech sounds, music, timing, prosody, speaker identity, space, and relationships across clips. It also exposes a common mistake in audio evaluation: treating a correct transcript as proof of audio understanding.

What “understanding audio” should mean
Audio understanding is broader than converting speech to words. A capable audio-language model should use information carried by the acoustic signal itself, including:

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Speech content: the words and their literal meaning.
- Prosody and paralinguistics: stress, intonation, hesitation, laughter, crying, sarcasm, confidence, and emotional state.
- Timing: order, duration, pauses, interruptions, overlaps, and when an event occurs.
- Speaker information: who said what, whether two turns came from the same person, and how speakers relate to one another.
- Non-speech events: alarms, footsteps, doors, engines, applause, impacts, animal calls, and background activity.
- Spatial information: whether a sound came from the left, right, front, rear, near, or far, when the recording preserves those cues.
- Music: instruments, rhythm, structure, melody, performance changes, and relationships between musical passages.
- Cross-audio reasoning: comparing two or more clips, identifying changes, and connecting events over a long recording.
MMSU, published in 2026, organizes 5,000 audio-question-answer triplets across 47 tasks covering semantic, prosodic, phonological, and paralinguistic phenomena. MMAU contains 10,000 curated clips and 27 skills (ICLR 2025). MMAU-Pro expands the evaluation to 5,305 instances and 49 skills, including long-form, spatial, and multi-audio reasoning (AAAI 2026). These scopes illustrate why word-recognition accuracy alone is an incomplete measure.

The core experiment: keep the transcript fixed, change the sound
Start with a transcript-controlled pair. The two files should contain the same spoken words in the same order, but differ in one acoustic property. The question must be impossible to answer reliably from the words alone.
Useful paired-clip designs
- Emotion: Record “I’m fine” as sincere, frightened, angry, and sarcastic. Ask which delivery sounds alarmed or whether the speaker appears calm.
- Speaker identity: Have two people read identical lines, or alternate speakers while preserving the script. Ask who made a particular statement or whether two turns came from the same person.
- Timing and order: Keep the same events but change which happened first, insert a pause, or move an interruption. Ask what occurred before the alarm or how long the silence lasted.
- Background sound: Add a dog bark, siren, glass break, running water, or keyboard typing without changing the dialogue. Ask which event occurred or what caused a reaction.
- Spatial placement: Record or mix the same sound from the left and right channels. Ask where the sound originated. This requires a stereo or multichannel signal; a mono file cannot provide reliable left-right evidence.
- Cross-clip change: Use two versions of a scene with one altered event. Ask what changed, which clip contains the longer pause, or whether the same person appears in both.
For every item, write down the acoustic fact that changed and the answer that depends on it. If a person could answer from the transcript, common sense, or a visible filename, the item is not a clean audio-dependence test.
Add controls that reveal textual shortcuts
Run each question under at least three conditions:
| Condition | What the model receives | What it diagnoses |
|---|---|---|
| Real audio | The original clip, with the question | Overall performance with all available evidence |
| Silent audio | The same duration and file structure, but no audible signal | Whether the model can answer without acoustic evidence |
| Transcript-only | The exact transcript as text, without audio | How much of the task is solvable from words and language priors |
Keep duration, question wording, answer choices, and ordering identical across conditions. A silent control should preserve timing metadata where possible, so the only meaningful change is the absence of sound. A transcript-only control should not accidentally include speaker labels, stage directions, or captions that reveal the answer.
DCASE’s Audio-Dependency Filtering procedure uses silent-audio probing, option-level checks, commonsense checks, and human review to remove questions that can be solved from text. Its resulting ADQA-Bench contains 3,000 items (DCASE 2026). That design is useful even for a small in-house test: first ask whether the transcript alone supports each answer, then discard leaky items.
Build questions around distinct capability axes
Do not report one blended score and assume it represents listening. Create enough items in each category to show where a model depends on audio and where it does not.

| Axis | Question examples | Evidence that must be heard |
|---|---|---|
| Temporal order and duration | Which happened first? Was the pause shorter than two seconds? | Sequence, elapsed time, pauses, overlaps |
| Speaker attribution | Who said the final sentence? Did the same speaker ask both questions? | Voice characteristics and turn boundaries |
| Emotion and prosody | Which delivery sounds sarcastic, hesitant, relieved, or urgent? | Pitch, stress, rhythm, loudness, voice quality |
| Sound events and causality | What made the crash? Did a siren start before the speaker stopped? | Non-speech event identity and temporal relationship |
| Spatial location | Did the horn come from the left or right? | Channel and localization cues |
| Multi-speaker relations | Who interrupted whom? Did one speaker respond to another? | Overlap, turn-taking, identity, timing |
| Music structure | Which instrument enters later? Does the chorus repeat? | Timbre, arrangement, rhythm, melodic structure |
| Multi-audio comparison | What differs between the two recordings? | Cross-clip alignment and comparison |
| Long-context reasoning | What event at minute six explains the statement at minute nine? | Retrieval across a long temporal span |
MMSU explicitly includes prosody and paralinguistics, while MMAU-Pro adds long-form, spatial, and multi-audio skills. Use those categories to prevent a benchmark from becoming a disguised speech-recognition test.
A step-by-step test protocol
- Define the claim. Decide whether you are testing emotion, speaker identity, timing, sound events, localization, music, or cross-clip reasoning. Write the claim in one sentence, such as “The model can identify which speaker made a statement when the words are identical.”
- Create or select audio pairs. Keep the transcript constant and alter one acoustic variable at a time. Avoid changing volume, file quality, or length unless those are the variables under test.
- Write an audio-dependent question. Include plausible answers that the transcript supports but the audio contradicts. For a speaker test, make the wrong speaker say words that fit the question. For an emotion test, ensure the same sentence can plausibly express several emotions.
- Run leakage checks. Give the transcript and question to a human reviewer without audio. If the reviewer can infer the answer from wording, context, filenames, or metadata, rewrite the item.
- Generate controls. Produce a silent version with matching duration and a transcript-only version. Keep all prompts, options, and randomization settings fixed.
- Evaluate in a blinded order. Randomize condition and answer-option order. Do not tell the evaluator whether a response came from real, silent, or transcript-only input.
- Repeat where the model is stochastic. Record the model version, decoding settings, temperature, system prompt, audio format, sample rate, and maximum context. Use multiple runs when outputs vary.
- Score by capability and condition. Calculate accuracy for real audio, silence, and transcript-only input separately. Report the difference between real audio and each control, not just the real-audio average.
- Inspect failures. Save the prompt, clip, model response, and expected answer. Classify errors as transcription, temporal, speaker, prosodic, spatial, non-speech, retrieval, or evaluator errors.
- Hold out new material. Keep a test set recorded by different speakers or in different environments. Otherwise a model may memorize voices, scripts, or benchmark artifacts.
Use adversarial distractors instead of easy recognition questions
A weak item asks, “What did the person say?” A stronger item makes the transcript misleading. Suppose the transcript is “The package arrived yesterday,” but the recording contains a questioning, doubtful delivery followed by a doorbell. Ask whether the speaker sounds certain, or what event follows the statement. The words remain unchanged while the required answer shifts with prosody or background sound.
AUDITA uses human-authored real-world trivia, plausible distractors, and long-range temporal dependencies. In its 2026 report, human accuracy was 32.13%, while state-of-the-art audio-question-answering models scored below 8.86%. The low human score indicates that difficult audio questions can challenge people too; it is not evidence that every model failure proves a lack of listening. Use distractors that are plausible but uniquely contradicted by the recording, and pilot them with several human listeners.
Test entailment, not just multiple-choice recall
For a more direct reasoning probe, present a hypothesis and ask the model to label it entailed, contradicted, or neutral. Audio Entailment defines this three-way task to test deductive reasoning from audio. Examples include:
- Audio: a person says they will leave after the bell, then the bell rings. Hypothesis: “The bell rang before the person said they would leave.”
- Audio: a siren is audible, but its source is never identified. Hypothesis: “A police car caused the siren.”
- Audio: two speakers overlap and one phrase is unintelligible. Hypothesis: “Speaker B definitely repeated Speaker A’s last sentence.”
The neutral label matters. A model that always chooses entailment or fills gaps with common sense can appear accurate on binary questions while failing to represent uncertainty.

Include retrieval-grounded audio tasks when the use case needs them
Some real applications require more than hearing the clip. They require identifying an audio fact and then finding external information. AudioRAG evaluates audio questions that combine audio interpretation with information retrieval and reports that state-of-the-art models struggle in realistic web settings (PMLR 2026). A retrieval-grounded item might ask the model to identify a bird call in a recording and then provide a fact about that species, with the answer supported by retrieved sources.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Score the two stages separately: first, whether the model correctly extracted the audio fact; second, whether the retrieved evidence supports the final answer. Otherwise a model could retrieve a convincing page for the wrong sound and receive undeserved credit.
Evaluate open answers without hiding evaluator bias
Exact-match scoring is appropriate for labels such as “left,” “right,” or “speaker A,” but it is too brittle for explanations. For open responses:
- Use blinded human reviewers who do not know the model or test condition.
- Provide a rubric that separates factual correctness, use of acoustic evidence, completeness, and unsupported speculation.
- Have at least two reviewers score a meaningful sample and report inter-rater agreement.
- Adjudicate disagreements with a third reviewer or a documented rule.
- If an automated judge is used, calibrate it against human ratings and inspect disagreement cases.
AIR-Bench describes human-evaluation procedures and warns that automated evaluation can be biased. A fluent explanation is not proof that the model heard the clip; require it to identify the relevant time span or acoustic cue when that is part of the task.
How to calculate and report the audio-dependence gap
For each skill, report at least three percentages:
- Real-audio accuracy: correct answers with the original recording.
- Silence accuracy: correct answers when the audio is silent.
- Transcript-only accuracy: correct answers from the transcript without audio.
Then calculate:
- Real-to-silence drop = real-audio accuracy minus silence accuracy.
- Real-to-transcript drop = real-audio accuracy minus transcript-only accuracy.
- Audio-dependence ratio = the real-to-silence drop divided by real-audio accuracy, when real-audio accuracy is nonzero.
A large drop on emotion or localization items suggests the model used acoustic evidence. A near-zero drop means the item may be text-solvable, the model ignored the audio, or the audio manipulation was too subtle. A high transcript-only score is not automatically bad: some semantic questions genuinely depend only on words. Interpret the gap by skill rather than applying one universal threshold.

Publish item counts, confidence intervals or bootstrap uncertainty when sample sizes allow, and the exact prompts and clips. State whether scores are from one run or repeated trials. A five-point difference based on 20 items is much less persuasive than the same difference over hundreds of held-out items.

Published scores illustrate the difficulty of robust audio reasoning, not a universal intelligence ranking. On MMAU, Gemini 2.0 Flash scored 59.93% and Qwen2-Audio 52.50% (ICLR 2025). On MMAU-Pro, Gemini 2.5 Flash scored 57.33% and Audio Flamingo 3 scored 45.9% (AAAI 2026). DCASE reports a top ADQA-Bench score of 58.33% and an average 11.93-percentage-point drop from development to hidden evaluation (DCASE 2026).
These results support a narrow conclusion: strong language ability and transcription do not guarantee dependable audio reasoning. They do not establish that one model understands every type of sound, nor that scores from different benchmarks are directly comparable. Dataset construction, answer format, model version, prompting, and hidden-test difficulty all affect the result.
Common failure modes and fixes
The transcript gives away the answer
Symptom: transcript-only accuracy is nearly identical to real-audio accuracy. Fix: rewrite the item around prosody, timing, speaker identity, or a non-speech event; remove revealing speaker labels and captions.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The silent control still carries a shortcut
Symptom: the model answers from duration, filename, metadata, or a malformed audio token. Fix: match filenames, duration, container, and prompt text across files; verify that silence contains no residual waveform or hidden transcript.

The acoustic manipulation changes several variables
Symptom: a model fails, but you cannot tell whether it missed emotion, loudness, recording quality, or a timing change. Fix: alter one property per pair and document the edit.
Multiple answers are defensible
Symptom: human reviewers disagree about the expected label. Fix: use clearer recordings, accept multiple answers where appropriate, or mark the item neutral rather than forcing a label.
The model guesses from common sense
Symptom: it names a likely cause that the audio never establishes. Fix: add neutral entailment items and require the response to distinguish “not heard” from “false.”

Long clips exceed effective attention
Symptom: performance collapses when the relevant event is far from the question’s context. Fix: report results by clip length and distance between evidence and question; test timestamped retrieval separately from whole-clip reasoning.
Evaluation rewards fluent stories
Symptom: a detailed answer receives credit despite inventing sounds or speakers. Fix: score evidence use and unsupported claims separately, with blinded human review.
Minimum publishable test report
- Model name, exact version, date tested, prompt, decoding settings, and audio limits.
- Clip format, channel layout, duration range, languages, speakers, and recording conditions.
- Number of items per capability, with a description of how pairs were constructed.
- Real, silent, and transcript-only scores, plus control gaps.
- Open-answer rubric, reviewer count, agreement measure, and adjudication method.
- Held-out split policy, randomization procedure, and uncertainty intervals where feasible.
- Representative successes and failures with timestamps or acoustic evidence.
Do not call a model an audio-understanding system because it transcribes accurately or produces a convincing explanation. The stronger claim requires a measurable performance drop when the relevant acoustic evidence is removed, plus success on questions that words alone cannot answer.
