Compare the sample’s apparent weight fully submerged with its weight in air, then repeat after wetting the sample and releasing visible bubbles. The difference in weight is the buoyant force; if apparent flotation changes after wetting, air or another wetting-related effect may have contributed. That test cannot, on its own, prove that all internal air is gone or reveal the material’s intrinsic solid density.
What the test measures
Archimedes’ principle says that a submerged object experiences an upward buoyant force equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces. NASA’s explanation of Archimedes’ principle describes this relationship.

To estimate the force, compare the sample’s weight in air with its apparent weight while fully submerged. The reduction is the buoyant force, provided the suspension and measurement setup are accounted for. A spring-scale demonstration from SERC at Carleton College illustrates this kind of comparison. The force corresponds to the weight of displaced liquid, not necessarily to the weight of the solid material alone.
How to compare dry and wetted trials
- Record the dry sample. Measure its mass or weight in air. Note its dimensions and any visible pores, rough texture, or coating.
- Measure it submerged. Attach a thin suspension and lower the sample fully into the test liquid. Keep it from touching the vessel and record its apparent weight. A spring scale can suit a classroom demonstration; a balance-based setup may be more appropriate for a small specimen.
- Check displaced liquid if practical. Collect and measure the displaced liquid where the setup permits. Alternatively, infer displaced volume from the buoyant-force change and the liquid’s density. University demonstrations from UCSC and SERC show the relationship between displaced water and buoyant effect.
- Re-wet and repeat. Remove the sample, wet it again, and allow visible bubbles to escape. Repeat the submerged measurement using the same liquid and, as far as practical, the same temperature, immersion depth, and suspension method. This is a useful control for this question, not a validated protocol for an unidentified metamaterial.
- Account for a sinker if needed. If the sample floats and must be held underwater, the sinker also displaces liquid. The SMU Physics sinker method describes comparing the object in air, the object in air with the sinker submerged, and both object and sinker submerged so the sinker’s buoyancy can be accounted for.
How to interpret the result
- Initial flotation weakens after wetting: the fluid-accessible state changed, and air may have contributed to the initial behavior. The change alone does not establish the cause; trapped air, capillary effects, surface tension, swelling, or structural changes could also affect the result.
- The sample remains supported after wetting: this is evidence against an explanation limited to air initially trapped at the outside surface. It does not prove that all internal air has been removed.
- The readings are inconsistent: check for contact with the vessel, bubbles on the surface or suspension, changes in immersion depth, and whether the sample is fully submerged. Repeat with the same setup before drawing conclusions.
For a porous material, liquid may enter some pores while other regions remain sealed or air-filled. As a result, the effective volume displacing liquid—and therefore the apparent density—can depend on wetting state. HyperPhysics notes that enclosed bubbles can complicate density measurements in its density and buoyancy overview; an archived ERIC educational document also discusses air bubbles in relation to flotation. Neither source specifies a treatment that conclusively removes air from this metamaterial.

What the test cannot establish
The sample’s identity, pore structure, surface chemistry, and wetting behavior are unspecified. Those properties—and the choice of liquid—can determine whether fluid enters the material or bubbles remain attached. A dry-versus-wet comparison can reveal a change in behavior, but it cannot by itself isolate the mechanism or establish the intrinsic density of the solid framework. No particular soak duration, pressure, vacuum treatment, or surfactant is established for this specimen.
