To test a web UI with Selenium, use WebDriver to open the application, locate controls with stable selectors, interact with them as a user would, wait for the UI state your next step needs, and assert a visible outcome. A page-load event alone does not mean JavaScript-driven content is ready.
What Selenium does in a UI test
Selenium is a project of browser automation tools. WebDriver is the usual starting point for automating a website: it drives a browser through the automation APIs supplied by browser vendors, exercising the application through the browser rather than through a test-only hook in the application. See the Selenium overview.
A useful UI test checks a user outcome, not merely whether a sequence of clicks ran. For example, a sign-in test should submit valid credentials and verify a meaningful result, such as a signed-in heading or account page.
Build a reliable Selenium test workflow
1. Choose one user-visible outcome
Keep the test focused on one flow, such as submitting a form or adding an item to a cart. Decide what the user should see after the action before writing the interactions. A click without an assertion can pass even when the application has failed to do the important work.

2. Drive the browser with WebDriver
Choose the Selenium language binding and browser that fit your project, then configure the matching browser setup for your environment. The exact installation commands and version requirements depend on the language, browser, and environment; consult the relevant current Selenium setup documentation rather than assuming one command works everywhere.
3. Locate controls with stable selectors
Prefer a unique, predictable ID when the page provides one. Otherwise, use a compact CSS selector that expresses the target clearly. Use XPath when it makes a relationship or text-based target easier to understand, not as an excuse for a long path tied to the page’s current layout. Selenium’s locator guidance recommends selectors that are readable and easy to maintain.
- Good default: a unique ID or concise CSS selector tied to a stable element.
- Use with care: XPath that depends on multiple ancestors or incidental layout structure.
- Review when UI changes: selectors coupled to generated classes or frequently changing markup.
4. Wait for the state the next action needs
Navigation readiness generally concerns the page’s HTML assets; it does not guarantee that later JavaScript changes have finished. If the next step depends on a button appearing, a result becoming visible, or a route transition completing, wait for that specific condition. Selenium’s waiting strategies describe explicit waits as polling for a condition until it succeeds or times out.

5. Assert a meaningful result and keep tests understandable
After interacting with the page, check a visible result that demonstrates the intended outcome. Keep setup and test state clear so one test does not depend on another having run first. Selenium makes browser interaction possible; it does not automatically design a well-architected test suite. The Selenium test-practice guidance leaves that responsibility with the test author.

How to wait for an element in Selenium
Use an explicit wait when a particular action depends on a particular UI condition. For example, wait for the submit button to be visible before clicking it, or wait for a confirmation message after submission. Set a timeout appropriate to the test environment and wait for the condition that proves the next step is safe.
An implicit wait is a global setting applied to element-location calls. An explicit wait polls for a particular condition. These solve different synchronization needs; avoid combining them casually, because Selenium warns that mixing implicit and explicit waits can produce unpredictable total wait times.

Fixed sleeps are a poor default. A short sleep may finish before a slow page is ready; a long sleep adds needless time whenever the page is already ready. Prefer a condition-based wait, and investigate timeouts by checking whether the expected state can occur, whether the locator is correct, and whether the application is responding in the test environment.
Local browser or Selenium Grid?
Local execution is usually the simpler development loop for a small suite. Selenium Grid routes WebDriver commands to remote browser instances and is intended for needs such as parallel execution, browser-version coverage, and cross-platform testing. See the Selenium Grid documentation.
| Approach | Useful when | Trade-off to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Local browser | Developing or debugging a small set of tests in one environment. | Coverage is limited to the browser and platform available locally. |
| Selenium Grid | Tests need remote sessions, parallel runs, multiple browser versions, or multiple platforms. | Distributed execution adds setup and operational considerations; decide whether the added coverage and concurrency justify them. |
Choose based on the browser and platform risks you need to cover, desired parallelism, execution time, and the operational effort your team can support. There is no universal performance winner independent of the suite and infrastructure.

Troubleshooting flaky Selenium UI tests
- Element not found: confirm the page is on the expected state, then verify the selector is unique and still matches the current markup. Wait for the relevant condition if the element is added asynchronously.
- Element is present but not ready to interact with: wait for the state your action requires, such as visibility, rather than treating page navigation as proof that the UI is ready.
- Intermittent timeout: identify which condition timed out and whether the application, test data, or environment can prevent it from becoming true. Avoid masking the issue with a longer fixed sleep.
- Tests pass only in a particular order: inspect setup and shared state. Make each test’s required state explicit instead of depending on earlier tests.
- Wait duration behaves unexpectedly: check whether implicit and explicit waits are both active. Selenium cautions against mixing them because the resulting timing can be unpredictable.
- Selector breaks after a layout change: replace structural selectors tied to incidental DOM nesting with a unique stable ID or a compact, meaningful CSS selector where possible.
Or skip the browser setup
For a screenshot rather than an interactive test, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request website screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
cURL example; replace the target URL and use your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free and try ScreenshotNeo.

Does Selenium test the application through a real browser?
Yes. WebDriver controls the browser through browser-vendor automation APIs.
Best Value
Should I use a fixed sleep to wait for a page?
Usually not. Wait for the specific UI condition your next action or assertion requires.
When is Selenium Grid useful?
When tests need remote browser sessions, parallel execution, browser-version coverage, or runs across platforms.
