Boiling and routine disinfection do not remove fuel or toxic chemicals. Use bottled water or another verified safe source, follow the local advisory exactly, and do not flush household plumbing unless officials direct you to.
An industrial fire can contaminate water through several routes: damaged treatment or distribution equipment, smoke or fire-suppression chemicals entering a source, contaminated runoff reaching a well, or vapors and liquid chemicals entering private plumbing. The right test depends on the chemicals burned, the path contamination could have taken, and whether your home is connected to a public water system or a private well.

What to do before testing
Follow the official water-use advisory
Read the utility, county, state health department, or emergency-management notice for your address. An advisory may prohibit only drinking and cooking, or it may prohibit bathing, brushing teeth, washing dishes, laundry, ice making, and all other uses. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says utilities must tell customers which uses to avoid and when restrictions are lifted. A “boil water” notice is not the same as a chemical-contamination notice.

If no advisory has been issued
Call the water utility immediately if you are on public water and the fire is close enough that smoke, runoff, a damaged facility, or a pipeline could affect your supply. Tell the utility your address, when you noticed a change, and whether you have seen an official notice. If you use a private well, contact the local or state health department before arranging sampling. Emergency responders may have incident information that is not yet posted publicly.
Do not flush or disinfect on your own
Do not open every tap, run appliances, drain the water heater, add disinfectant, or resume normal use merely because the water looks clear. Those actions can spread volatile chemicals through indoor air, move contamination into plumbing, or destroy evidence needed for an investigation. Wait for written or direct instructions from the utility or health department.
First determine your water source
| Water source | Who leads the assessment | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Public water system | The utility and responding agencies characterize the incident, collect system samples, and issue clearance. | Follow the advisory; call the utility if you suspect contamination or have no notice. Do not order a private test as a substitute for official clearance. |
| Private well | The well owner must contact the local or state health department and arrange an incident-specific assessment with a certified laboratory. | Keep using bottled water until officials provide a safe-use plan. Ask which chemicals, locations, containers, methods, and follow-up samples are required. |
| Shared or small community system | The system operator may coordinate with the health department, but responsibilities vary by jurisdiction. | Ask the operator whether your service line and storage tanks are included in the sampling area, and follow the most restrictive official instruction. |
A laboratory result from one household tap cannot clear an entire public system. Conversely, an official public-system result does not automatically prove that a private well or household plumbing is uncontaminated.

Start with the incident inventory
Ask the fire department, environmental agency, health department, or utility what burned, what was stored on site, and what fire-fighting agents or fuels could have entered runoff. The panel should reflect that inventory and the route to your water. A solvent released to a drainage ditch calls for a different analyte list than a petroleum storage fire, a metal-processing fire, or a warehouse fire with mixed products.
Do not buy a generic “full panel” without professional guidance. A laboratory can test only the compounds and reporting limits included in the order; a broad label does not guarantee coverage of the chemical that concerns you.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
VOCs can evaporate during collection, transport, or use. CDC post-fire well guidance identifies VOCs as a potential class and mentions broad EPA Methods 502.2 or 524.2 for VOC coverage. The laboratory must select the method and analytes appropriate to the incident, rather than assuming either method detects every possible fire-related compound.
Semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs)
SVOCs include less-volatile compounds that may be associated with fuels, industrial materials, or combustion-related releases. They require different containers, preservation, volumes, and holding times from VOC samples. Ask the laboratory which SVOCs are justified by the facility inventory and runoff pathway.

Metals
CDC guidance specifically mentions lead, copper, zinc, and iron, with other metals selected for local concerns. The appropriate list may include metals used or stored at the facility, metals in ash or suppression materials, or metals identified by responders. A metal result can also depend on whether the sample is collected before or after flushing, so follow the laboratory’s instructions exactly.
Other parameters
Routine measures such as pH, hardness, chlorine, nitrate, odor, and appearance can help describe water conditions, but they do not demonstrate that an unknown industrial-fire chemical is absent. Add microbiological or other tests only when the health department or laboratory identifies a reason, such as a loss of pressure, sewage intrusion, or a damaged wellhead.
Use an accredited laboratory, not a generic home kit
Consumer strips and broad kits can screen a few parameters, including pH, hardness, chlorine, nitrate, or sometimes lead. They generally do not provide the method-specific containers, preservatives, reporting limits, quality controls, or chain-of-custody documentation needed for fire-related VOC, SVOC, and metals work.

Before paying for a test, ask the laboratory:
- Whether it is accredited or certified by your state for drinking-water analysis.
- Which VOCs, SVOCs, and metals it will report, and the reporting limit for each.
- Which EPA or other approved method will be used for each analyte.
- Which bottles, preservatives, sample volumes, and holding times apply.
- Whether field blanks, trip blanks, duplicates, or other quality-control samples are required.
- How chain-of-custody paperwork and temperature-controlled shipping must be handled.
- Whether the laboratory is accepting emergency samples and can meet the method’s holding time.
A negative home-kit result must not end a bottled-water precaution or contradict an official advisory. If you already used a home kit, keep the result and the kit details for the health department, but treat it as screening information only.
How to collect a defensible sample
Sampling errors can create a false negative, a false positive, or a result that the laboratory cannot legally report. Use only bottles supplied or explicitly approved by the laboratory. Do not transfer water into a kitchen jar or another container.
- Confirm the sampling plan. Ask whether the laboratory wants a first-draw sample, a flushed sample, or both. The answer differs for household plumbing investigations, source-water testing, and VOC work.
- Select the correct tap. Unless instructed otherwise, use a cold-water tap without a hose, filter, treatment device, or swivel aerator. Remove aerators, hoses, and filters only if the laboratory or health department directs you; document what you removed.
- Prepare the area. Keep cleaners, fuels, smoke, and other chemicals away from the open bottle. Wash your hands. Do not touch the bottle mouth, cap interior, septum, or preservative.
- Flush as instructed. For a flushed sample, run cold water until the temperature stabilizes, often after several minutes. Reduce the flow to a smooth stream that will not splash. If officials prohibit running the water because vapors or contamination could be released, stop and ask for an alternative procedure.
- Fill VOC vials without bubbles. Allow water to flow gently down the vial wall or through the laboratory-specified device. Fill completely so there is no headspace, then cap immediately. A visible bubble can invalidate a VOC sample.
- Use the right container for each analyte. Metals, SVOCs, and other analyses may require different bottles, acids or other preservatives, volumes, and handling instructions. Never combine samples simply because one bottle is empty.
- Label and document. Record the address, tap, date, time, sampler, sample type, and any unusual condition. Complete every chain-of-custody field before shipping or handoff.
- Keep samples cold. Pack them as the laboratory directs, usually in a clean cooler with cold packs that do not contact or contaminate the bottles. Deliver them within the laboratory’s stated holding time.
- Retain quality-control records. If the method requires trip blanks, field blanks, duplicates, or temperature records, include them. These controls help distinguish contamination introduced during sampling or transport from contamination at the tap.
Never improvise a VOC collection. If you cannot fill the vials without bubbles, keep the water-use restriction in place and have trained personnel resample.
How public-system testing works
Utility sampling comes first
For a public system, the utility and responding agencies map the affected area, identify pressure zones and facilities, and sample locations that can establish whether contamination entered the source, treatment plant, storage, or distribution network. They may sample raw water, treated water, hydrants, service connections, and customer taps. The exact locations and analytes depend on the incident.
What a household test can and cannot show
A private sample can document conditions at your tap, but it covers only the analytes, location, collection conditions, and laboratory methods used. It cannot clear neighboring homes, a whole pressure zone, or a public treatment plant. Give any result to the utility and health department instead of using it to override their advisory.

Clearance and resumption of use
The utility or health department determines whether remediation, controlled flushing, repeat sampling, or additional restrictions are needed. Resume drinking, cooking, bathing, or other uses only when the authority responsible for your system says that specific use is allowed. “The water looks normal” is not a clearance criterion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How private-well owners should proceed
Contact officials before sampling
Private wells are not monitored by a public utility. Call the local or state health department and explain the fire location, your well address, well depth if known, distance from the site, direction of groundwater flow if known, and any change in taste, odor, color, pressure, or pump operation. Ask whether responders have identified chemicals or runoff pathways.
Arrange an incident-specific laboratory assessment
Use a state-certified or otherwise appropriately accredited drinking-water laboratory selected with the health department. The laboratory should match VOC, SVOC, metals, and any other analytes to the facility inventory and the way contamination could reach the well. It may request samples from the well, pressure tank, treatment equipment, and an indoor tap, because those locations answer different questions.
Protect the well while the investigation continues
Keep the well cap, casing, electrical equipment, and treatment components secure. Do not pour disinfectant, solvents, absorbents, or other chemicals into the well. Do not operate treatment equipment or alter plumbing in a way that could spread contamination unless officials instruct you to.

Plan follow-up sampling
CDC guidance recommends follow-up testing after emergency work and continued monitoring when conditions warrant. A single clean sample may not establish long-term safety if contamination is migrating, a well was repaired, or plumbing was flushed. The health department should set the timing and analytes for repeat samples.

How to read the laboratory report
Check the scope before the number
Find the sample location, collection date and time, requested analytes, analytical method, reporting limit, and any qualification flags. “Not detected” means the compound was not detected above that method’s reporting limit in that sample; it does not mean the compound is absent at every concentration or everywhere in the system.
Look for quality and holding-time notes
Review whether the laboratory received the sample within the required holding time, at the required temperature, and in an acceptable container. Notes about bubbles, damaged seals, missing preservatives, blank contamination, or a missed holding time can make a result qualified or unusable.
Send results to the responsible authority
Provide the complete report, chain-of-custody record, and sampling notes to the utility or health department. If contamination is confirmed, officials determine remediation, controlled flushing, repeat sampling, and clearance. Do not attempt to solve chemical contamination by boiling or routine disinfection.

Testing options compared
| Option | Best use | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public-utility and agency sampling | Determining whether a public system is affected and when restrictions can end | System-wide locations, incident coordination, and official clearance | Timing and analyte list are controlled by responders; one household cannot accelerate clearance. |
| Incident-specific accredited laboratory panel | Private wells or targeted confirmation at a tap | Method-specific VOC/SVOC/metals coverage, reporting limits, quality controls, and chain of custody | Only represents the sampled locations and analytes; requires correct containers and handling. |
| Consumer screening kit | Routine, non-emergency checks of a few listed parameters | Quick indication for parameters such as pH, hardness, chlorine, nitrate, or some lead screens | Does not establish that unknown industrial-fire chemicals are absent and cannot replace official clearance. |
Common mistakes and safer alternatives
- Boiling contaminated water: Heat can kill many microbes but does not remove fuel or toxic chemicals. Use bottled water and follow the chemical advisory.
- Ordering a generic “full panel”: Ask officials and the laboratory to match analytes and methods to the incident inventory.
- Using a warm or filtered tap: Use the laboratory-specified cold tap and remove or bypass devices as instructed.
- Leaving headspace in VOC vials: Fill without bubbles and cap immediately; request a trained sampler if necessary.
- Flushing before instructions: Flushing may spread vapors, move contamination, or compromise an investigation. Wait for direction.
- Relying on one clean sample: Results apply only to the sampled analytes, location, conditions, and method. Follow the official repeat-sampling plan.
- Ignoring private-well pathways: A well can be affected even when a public-water notice does not apply. Contact the health department promptly.
A practical call checklist
Have this information ready when you call the utility, health department, or laboratory:
- Your service address and whether the property uses public water, a private well, or a shared system.
- The fire’s location, date, wind or runoff direction if known, and your distance from the site.
- Any official advisory wording and the time you received it.
- Changes in odor, taste, color, pressure, or water-system operation.
- Whether anyone drank the water or used it for cooking, bathing, pets, or infant formula.
- Any existing treatment equipment, recent plumbing work, or well repairs.
- The laboratory’s proposed analytes, methods, reporting limits, containers, holding times, and quality-control requirements.
Ask the official who is responsible for your water system to state, in plain language, which uses are currently prohibited, which source is safe, whether sampling is being arranged, and what event will end the restriction.
