Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe strongest way to test a serverless application on AWS is to combine fast unit tests with local iteration and deployed cloud tests. Unit tests check your business logic; cloud tests verify the parts that local code cannot prove, including real event sources, IAM permissions, managed-service behavior, and deployed configuration.
Use a testing pyramid adapted to serverless
Serverless applications still need unit, integration, and end-to-end tests. The distinction is what each layer can establish: a test can prove that code handles an input without proving that AWS can deliver that input or authorize the code to act on it.
| Test layer | What it checks | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Unit | Business logic in isolation, using representative inputs and mocked dependencies. | That deployed AWS services, permissions, event mappings, or configuration work. |
| Local integration | Local function execution, API behavior, or selected interactions with an emulator. | Exact AWS service behavior, deployed identity and IAM, quotas, or production configuration. |
| Cloud integration | Real deployed components and seams, such as an API, queue, function, database, and permissions. | Every possible user journey or production-scale performance unless those are explicitly exercised. |
| End-to-end | An application or workflow path from its entry point to an observable result. | Uncovered paths, failure modes, or load conditions. |
AWS Prescriptive Guidance states, “Testing in the cloud is valuable for all phases of testing, including unit tests, integration tests, and end-to-end tests.” Cloud-based tests provide the most accurate evidence of system behavior because they include deployed configuration and services, but they take more setup and require cost and resource controls. AWS Prescriptive Guidance: Best practices for testing serverless applications
Make Lambda handlers easy to unit-test
Keep the handler as a thin adapter. It should extract and validate the event, invoke ordinary application logic, and translate the result into the required response. Put business rules in functions that do not require Lambda runtime setup so unit tests can call them directly.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Test business logic with valid, invalid, boundary, and failure inputs.
- Mock external calls to make unit tests fast and repeatable; assert the intended request and handling of errors.
- Test the handler separately for event parsing, validation, and response shape.
Mocks are useful for breadth and rapid feedback, but a mocked S3 success does not prove the deployed role has s3:CreateBucket permission. Keep tests that exercise actual AWS integrations in a deployed test environment.
Use local tools for fast feedback, not as cloud proof
AWS SAM CLI
AWS SAM CLI supports local Lambda invocation and local API testing, which can shorten the edit-run-debug cycle and use a containerized runtime resembling Lambda. Local execution is not a full AWS deployment: it does not validate the deployed trigger mapping, execution role, service quotas, or all service behavior. Docker is needed for container-based local invocation.
Be especially careful with credentials: application code invoked locally can still make API calls to real AWS resources. Use nonproduction resources, least-privilege credentials, and isolated test data. AWS documents SAM local testing and its prerequisites in the SAM CLI local testing guide.
Emulators such as LocalStack
An emulator can provide a useful middle layer for selected service APIs and local integration tests. Treat its results as evidence about the emulated environment, not proof of exact AWS API parity, production identity, IAM, quotas, or deployed configuration. Retain cloud tests for those checks. AWS discusses local testing options in its serverless testing guidance; LocalStack describes its AWS service emulation at LocalStack.

Deploy a test stack to verify real AWS contracts
Deploy the application or a suitably representative isolated stack, then exercise the actual seams your design uses. A hand-crafted event passed directly to a Lambda handler checks handler behavior; it does not prove that API Gateway, SQS, S3 notifications, EventBridge, or a workflow invokes the deployed function correctly.
- API Gateway to Lambda: send requests through the deployed API and verify request mapping, authorization, response shape, and error handling.
- SQS to Lambda: place a valid message on the actual queue, then check that the function is invoked and produces the expected downstream result. Verify visibility timeout, execution-role permissions, and message constraints.
- Storage and databases: exercise the deployed access path and check both successful operations and expected permission or validation failures.
- EventBridge and workflows: trigger the deployed rule or workflow and verify the resulting state or side effect.
For each integration, check the deployed event shape, trigger configuration, IAM permissions, timeout and memory settings, and relevant service configuration. This is where a test can reveal failures that isolated code tests cannot, such as a missing permission or a broken event source mapping. AWS recommends validating serverless systems in the cloud as part of testing: AWS Prescriptive Guidance.
Test asynchronous work with correlation and a timeout
Queue consumers, event-driven functions, and workflows often complete after the initiating request returns. Do not assume that publishing an event means the work succeeded.
- Generate a unique correlation ID for each test run and include it in the event or request.
- Initiate the event or workflow in the deployed test environment.
- Poll a downstream state, result store, or test harness for the outcome associated with that ID.
- Stop at a defined timeout and report a useful failure rather than waiting indefinitely.
- Clean up test records and resources when the check completes or fails.
Give each developer or branch an isolated stack where possible. Concurrent tests that share mutable records or queue data can interfere with each other and make failures hard to diagnose.

Test Step Functions without relying on unsupported local parity
For state-machine logic, AWS points to the TestState API for unit testing states. AWS labels Step Functions Local unsupported and says it does not have feature parity with the managed service. Do not treat it as a production-grade substitute for testing deployed workflow integrations. Test actual service connections and workflow behavior in AWS. See AWS Step Functions testing and debugging and Step Functions Local.
Add performance, release, and cost checks
Run performance tests in an environment that reflects the services, configuration, and limits relevant to the application. A local benchmark alone cannot establish how the deployed system behaves under AWS service limits or network conditions.
- Review Lambda maximum memory use and initialization duration when evaluating resource settings and cold-start-sensitive paths.
- Check service quotas before load testing and understand whether the test could exhaust shared account capacity.
- For VPC-attached Lambda functions, account for available subnet IP address capacity.
- Run cloud integration checks in CI before promoting changes to QA, staging, or production.
- Use isolated accounts or stacks where practical, set spend alerts appropriate to the test, and remove temporary resources afterward.
AWS covers performance testing considerations, including quotas and Lambda and VPC capacity, in its serverless performance testing guidance.
Choose the right test layer for the question
| Approach | Feedback speed | AWS fidelity | IAM and configuration validation | Setup, isolation, and cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mocks and unit tests | Fast | Low for service integrations | No | Low setup; repeatable and inexpensive |
| SAM local | Fast iteration | Useful for local function/runtime feedback, not the full cloud | No deployed role or trigger validation | Requires Docker; manage credentials and real-resource access carefully |
| Service emulator | Usually fast local feedback | Limited to supported emulated behavior | Does not prove deployed identity or configuration | Requires emulator setup; parity varies by service |
| Deployed cloud tests | Slower, because deployment and services are involved | Highest for the deployed integration being exercised | Yes, for exercised paths and configuration | Requires isolated resources, cleanup, and cost controls |
Use the fastest layer that can answer the question, then add a cloud test whenever the question depends on AWS behavior, identity, or deployed configuration.

Troubleshoot common test failures
The unit test passes, but the deployed function gets AccessDenied
The test likely mocked the AWS call, so it did not exercise the deployed execution role. Check the role’s least-privilege policy and run a cloud integration test for the operation.
The function works locally but never runs from SQS
A direct invocation does not verify the queue subscription. Check the deployed event source mapping, queue and function permissions, valid message format, and visibility timeout; then publish a message to the actual test queue and observe its result.
A local test changes real AWS data
SAM local execution can make real AWS API calls through the credentials available to the process. Switch to isolated nonproduction resources and least-privilege credentials, and inspect application calls before rerunning.
An emulator passes but AWS behaves differently
Emulation does not guarantee service parity, IAM behavior, quotas, or production configuration. Keep the emulator test for quick feedback, then reproduce the integration in an isolated AWS stack.

An asynchronous test times out or observes another run’s result
Use a unique correlation ID per run, poll only for state tied to that ID, and set an explicit timeout. Avoid shared mutable test data and clean up records after completion.
A load test fails despite acceptable function code
Check service quotas, configured Lambda memory and initialization behavior, and available VPC subnet IP space. Repeat against an environment that reflects the services and limits relevant to the workload.
