How to Test RF Performance in a 5G or 4G Device Prototype

The reliable way to test a 5G or 4G prototype is to start with a defined device-under-test (DUT), then choose conducted measurements for an isolated radio path or over-the-air (OTA) measurements when the antenna, enclosure, orientation, or integrated array is part of the question. Use a controlled LTE/NR signal and a calibrated measurement setup, record the complete configuration, and map every result to the applicable 3GPP, ETSI, or certification test case.

A repeatable engineering measurement can reveal design regressions; it is not automatically evidence of standards compliance. Formal pass/fail claims require the current requirement, prescribed test point, tolerances, uncertainty treatment, and test plan for the device’s bands and features.

Decide what “RF performance” means for your prototype

RF performance covers several different questions. A transmitter test may ask how much power reaches an RF connector, whether modulation quality is acceptable, or whether unwanted emissions are controlled. A receiver test may ask for sensitivity under a wanted signal, or robustness in the presence of interference and fading. An OTA test may instead measure how the complete product radiates or receives through its antenna system.

Write the question before selecting equipment. Define the DUT hardware revision, firmware and test software, supported LTE and NR bands, channel bandwidths, duplex modes, power classes or output modes, carrier-aggregation and MIMO features, antenna paths, and intended operating conditions. Also label the purpose of each measurement:

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Design debug: a controlled comparison between prototype revisions.
  • Characterization: a broader data set used to tune matching, power control, thermal behavior, or antenna design.
  • Conformance preparation: a measurement aligned to a named 3GPP, ETSI, CTIA, or other program test case.

These categories can use similar instruments, but they support different claims. Do not call a convenient analyzer reading a certification result.

Conducted or OTA: choose the method that answers the question

Decision point Conducted measurement OTA measurement
Access Requires an RF connector or engineering test port and a defined reference plane. Measures the device radiatively in a controlled environment.
Best for Separating transceiver, power-amplifier, filter, and receiver-chain behavior from the antenna. Assessing the antenna, enclosure, orientation, user interaction, and integrated array as a product.
Typical quantities Port power and other transmitter or receiver results at the conducted reference plane. Total radiated power (TRP) and total radiated sensitivity (TRS), plus applicable MIMO OTA metrics.
Important limitation Does not measure antenna efficiency, enclosure detuning, spatial coverage, or hand effects. Results depend on chamber or site, mounting, orientation, polarization, sampling, method, and uncertainty.
Repeatability Usually easier to control when cables, adapters, and reference planes are characterized. Requires disciplined positioning, calibration, environment control, and the specified radiated method.

3GPP and ETSI maintain separate methods for LTE/UMTS and NR radiated performance. NR FR1 TRP/TRS work and NR MIMO OTA conformance have dedicated material. A nearby receive antenna, a phone-field-strength display, or a single chamber reading is not interchangeable with a standardized TRP or TRS result.

Build a test matrix before connecting instruments

Create one row for every combination that matters to the product. At minimum, include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • LTE and NR band, channel number or frequency, and channel bandwidth.
  • FDD or TDD mode and the required uplink/downlink configuration.
  • Power class, maximum-power state, and any power-control setting.
  • Number of carriers, carrier aggregation, MIMO layer or antenna-path configuration, and beam state where applicable.
  • Conducted port and reference plane, or OTA orientation, polarization, and mounting position.
  • Temperature, supply voltage, battery state, and other operating conditions that the test plan requires.
  • The exact objective and the standard test case, if the row is intended to support conformance.

Mark unsupported combinations as not applicable rather than silently testing a nearby mode. A prototype may support only a subset of a chipset’s advertised capabilities.

Use the common test environment as your setup model

ETSI TS 138 508-1 V17.7.0, published in February 2023, defines common UE test environments and equipment arrangements for LTE and NR transmitter, receiver, receiver-performance, and related cases. It is a useful model for identifying connections, signal paths, and controlled states; it is not a substitute for the current requirement that applies to your device.

Conducted equipment

A credible conducted bench commonly includes a cellular communication tester or signaling-capable LTE/NR setup, a signal generator, a spectrum analyzer or measurement receiver, calibrated RF cables and adapters, and power-measurement capability. Receiver-performance cases can additionally require controlled interference and fading generation. Choose equipment by supported bands, bandwidths, waveform and signaling capability, number of RF paths, receiver-test functions, automation, measurement uncertainty, and calibration or service support.

Connect each intended path through suitable cables and adapters. Measure or obtain the loss of every cable, attenuator, switch, and fixture over the frequencies used, then establish whether your reference plane is the instrument connector, fixture connector, or DUT connector. A 50-ohm SMA cable is useful only when its connector, frequency range, insertion loss, impedance, and power rating match the setup. It is an accessory, not a cellular tester, calibrated analyzer, OTA chamber, or conformance solution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OTA equipment

OTA work needs a controlled radiated environment, positioning and polarization equipment, a suitable measurement antenna or array, and the method appropriate to the LTE/NR generation, frequency range, antenna arrangement, and metric. Follow the prescribed DUT mounting, orientation, signal, sampling, and calibration procedure. Document the chamber or site, quiet-zone or field-uniformity information where applicable, and the uncertainty basis.

Step-by-step prototype workflow

1. Freeze the DUT configuration

  1. Record the board and enclosure revision, antenna or matching-network revision, modem and RFIC identifiers, firmware, test application, battery or supply condition, and thermal state.
  2. List the bands, channels, bandwidths, duplex modes, power states, carrier aggregation, MIMO, and antenna paths to be exercised.
  3. Separate diagnostic rows from rows intended to follow a formal test case.

2. Select the reference plane and access method

  1. For conducted work, identify the exact RF port for each path and the connector or fixture at which results will be reported.
  2. Characterize cable, adapter, switch, and fixture loss; note any attenuator and its power limit.
  3. For OTA work, define the chamber or site, DUT mount, orientation, polarization, distance or geometry required by the method, and the scan or sampling procedure.

3. Establish calibration and a baseline

  1. Check the calibration status of the analyzer, receiver, generator, power sensor, and any switching or fading equipment. CTIA’s NR maximum-output-power procedure, identified as 01.50 V6.0.0, calls for a calibrated and accurate RF instrument and references the 3GPP UE procedure and common configuration.
  2. Run a known path or reference device where your laboratory practice supports one, and save the setup state.
  3. Measure the noise floor, leakage, and any loopback or cable baseline needed to recognize a bad connection before testing the DUT.

4. Put the modem in the specified radio state

Use signaling or test-mode controls to select the band, channel, bandwidth, duplex configuration, power state, and traffic pattern required by the row. Confirm that the modem is transmitting or receiving the intended waveform rather than a network-selected fallback. Record resource allocation, scheduling, beam or layer state, and power-control conditions whenever the procedure exposes them.

5. Measure transmitter behavior

For a conducted maximum-power check, measure at the defined port and correct the reading to the chosen reference plane using the characterized path loss. For OTA work, run the prescribed radiated scan and calculate the specified quantity, such as TRP. Additional transmitter checks may include modulation or transmission quality and unwanted emissions, but each needs its own current requirement and test method.

There is no universal output-power limit for every 4G or 5G prototype. The limit and test point depend on band, power class, release, radio configuration, and selected case. Keep the instrument model, detector or measurement mode, resolution and video bandwidth, averaging, triggering, and raw traces with the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Measure receiver behavior

Apply a defined wanted signal at the level and waveform required by the selected procedure. For conducted sensitivity work, inject it through the configured port and account for path loss. Receiver-performance cases may add co-channel or adjacent interference, fading, or other controlled impairments. For full-device reception, use a radiated TRS method rather than substituting signal bars or a field-strength observation.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Record the criterion used to decide whether reception succeeded: throughput, block or packet error, synchronization, or the specific metric in the test case. Sensitivity and robustness limits vary with band, bandwidth, mode, and specification, so a generic “minimum dBm” number would be misleading.

7. Repeat the measurements that drive decisions

Repeat key points after changing the RFIC, power amplifier, filter, matching network, antenna, enclosure, thermal design, or firmware. Keep the same reference plane, instrument settings, DUT orientation, and operating state when comparing revisions. If a result changes, first rule out cable movement, connector wear, calibration drift, supply-voltage change, temperature, or an altered modem state.

8. Store a complete result record

One record per result should contain:

  • DUT serial number, hardware, enclosure, antenna, firmware, and test software revisions.
  • Band, channel, bandwidth, duplex mode, power state, carrier aggregation, MIMO or beam configuration, and traffic condition.
  • Conducted port and reference plane with every cable, adapter, attenuator, switch, and loss correction; or OTA chamber, mount, orientation, polarization, and scan details.
  • Instrument make and model, serial number, calibration status and date, settings, raw readings, and exported traces or files.
  • Supply, temperature, environmental conditions, setup diagram, operator, date, and time.
  • Uncertainty calculation or stated basis, along with the exact standard, release, version, and test-case identifier.

Interpret results without overstating them

Engineering result versus compliance result

An engineering result supports a decision such as “revision B radiates less power than revision A in this controlled configuration.” A compliance result requires the prescribed DUT state, equipment arrangement, test point, tolerances, uncertainty rules, and current certification plan. Use the phrase “engineering characterization” unless every compliance condition has been met and reviewed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common interpretation errors

  • Comparing unlike reference planes: a connector reading corrected to the DUT port cannot be compared directly with an uncorrected analyzer value.
  • Calling conducted power radiated power: antenna and enclosure losses are outside a conducted measurement.
  • Using one orientation as OTA coverage: spatial performance requires the specified orientations or scan.
  • Ignoring modem state: scheduler, power control, beam selection, and MIMO layers can change the result.
  • Quoting a limit without its conditions: band, power class, release, channel bandwidth, and test case travel with every limit.
  • Using consumer indicators for receiver testing: signal bars do not establish sensitivity or interference performance.

When to use a specialist RF or OTA laboratory

Escalate when your team lacks cellular signaling capability, calibrated instrumentation, controlled radiated facilities, or experience applying the exact test case. A capable laboratory should confirm, in writing, its supported LTE/NR bands and bandwidths, conducted and OTA methods, TRP/TRS or MIMO OTA scope, chamber or site capability, calibration and uncertainty practice, automation options, accreditation or declared scope where relevant, and the geography in which its report will be used.

Ask the lab to review your test matrix before booking time. That exposes missing ports, unsupported bands, incompatible power classes, or an enclosure that cannot be mounted as required. Keep your own DUT and firmware records even when the laboratory supplies the final report.

Standards and revision control

Use the standard named by the test plan, not a remembered number from an older project. The common-environment reference accessed for this guide is ETSI TS 138 508-1 V17.7.0 (February 2023). ETSI listings also show TR 37.902 V18.1.0 in January 2025 and Release 17 OTA materials in an August 2024 listing. CTIA’s published filename identifies document 01.50 V6.0.0 for its referenced NR maximum-output-power procedure.

These revision dates do not establish the correct requirement for every product or geography. Before quoting a numeric limit or stating pass/fail, verify the latest applicable 3GPP or ETSI release, correction set, CTIA or other program plan, supported band, radio configuration, and regional certification route. Keep the document version in the result record so a later revision does not silently change the meaning of an old measurement.

A practical decision checklist

  • Have you defined the DUT hardware, firmware, antenna paths, bands, bandwidths, modes, and objective?
  • Does the question concern the radio chain alone, or the antenna and complete enclosure?
  • Is the conducted reference plane known and are all path losses characterized?
  • Is the OTA mount, orientation, polarization, chamber or site, and metric specified?
  • Can the equipment generate the required LTE/NR wanted signal, interference, fading, and traffic state?
  • Are instruments calibrated, and is uncertainty recorded where the method requires it?
  • Is every result tied to a current, named test case rather than a generic limit?
  • Are engineering comparisons clearly separated from formal conformance claims?
  • Will the same setup be repeated after hardware, antenna, enclosure, or firmware changes?

If the answer to these questions is yes, your prototype data can support defensible design decisions and provide a clean starting point for formal testing. If not, fix the definition and setup before collecting more numbers; additional readings from an uncontrolled method rarely resolve the underlying ambiguity.
