Test responsive layouts by capturing the same page at widths that exercise your CSS breakpoints, then compare each screenshot with an approved baseline. Use Chrome DevTools for quick manual checks and Playwright Test for repeatable visual regression checks. Keep the browser, page state, viewport, and capture region consistent; use a real phone or tablet when you need to verify behavior that emulation cannot reproduce.
Choose viewport sizes that test your breakpoints
A viewport is the browser’s layout area. For responsive CSS checks, record its actual width and height rather than relying only on a device name: two devices with the same marketing label can have different browser viewports.
Start with the breakpoints in your own CSS. Capture at widths just below and just above each breakpoint, as well as at representative narrow, medium, and wide widths. A layout can look correct at the named breakpoint but fail during the transition—for example, when navigation wraps or a card grid has too little room.
Chrome DevTools Device Mode offers preset widths of 320px, 375px, 425px, 768px, 1024px, 1440px, and 2560px. These are convenient options in the tool, not a universal standard or a complete test matrix. Add the widths your design actually needs.

Capture screenshots manually in Chrome DevTools
-
Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools. Turn on Device Mode using the device toolbar.
-
Choose a preset or enter a custom width and height in the responsive viewport controls. You can also drag the viewport to inspect intermediate widths.
-
Check the page at your selected widths. Look for overflow, clipped text, overlapping controls, unexpected wrapping, and changes in alignment or spacing.
-
Open Device Mode’s More options menu and choose Capture screenshot to save the visible viewport, or Capture full size screenshot to include the full page beyond the current viewport.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Use the same page state and capture type for each comparison. Record the viewport dimensions alongside each image so you can reproduce the check.

Chrome describes Device Mode as a way to approximate how a page looks and performs on a mobile device; it does not run your code on an actual mobile device. Treat it as useful responsive-layout coverage, not proof of identical behavior on physical hardware.
Automate viewport screenshots with Playwright
For repeatable checks on a local machine or in CI, Playwright can set explicit viewport dimensions or use a device descriptor. Explicit dimensions are the clearest choice when the question is how your layout responds to width. A device descriptor models additional settings such as user agent, screen size, viewport, and touch capability; state which profile you use rather than implying it reproduces every aspect of a physical device.
Install Playwright Test in your project with npm init playwright@latest if it is not already set up. This example tests two widths and uses Playwright Test’s screenshot assertion:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsimport { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
for (const width of [375, 768]) {
test(`responsive layout at ${width}px`, async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width, height: 900 });
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(`home-${width}.png`, {
fullPage: false,
});
});
}
Replace the local URL and widths with your application’s route and breakpoint-focused matrix. The example captures the visible viewport. Set fullPage: true when the full scrollable page is part of the check; keep that choice consistent between baseline creation and later runs.
Run the test with npx playwright test. On its first run, toHaveScreenshot() creates reference screenshots; later runs compare new captures with those references. The assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing them. Review the generated references, then commit and review snapshot files with the tests. After an intentional design change, update approved references with npx playwright test --update-snapshots.

Screenshot comparison is provided through the Playwright Test runner. If you use device descriptors, configure a Playwright project with the desired descriptor; the emulation guide also documents locale, timezone, permissions, geolocation, and color scheme. Use those settings when they affect the page under test.
Keep visual comparisons stable and useful
Playwright warns that browser rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Generate and compare baselines in the same environment where possible, including the browser version and run mode.

-
Keep state fixed: use the same route, viewport dimensions, data, authentication state, and capture region. Dynamic content such as timestamps can create differences unrelated to responsive CSS.
-
Handle motion and volatile regions deliberately: the screenshot assertion disables animations by default. You can mask elements or apply a stylesheet to hide content that changes unpredictably.
-
Set thresholds carefully: a threshold can allow small pixel or color differences, but an overly permissive setting may hide a real regression. Review diffs rather than treating a passing assertion as proof the page is correct.

Separate viewport and full-page questions: viewport captures are useful for above-the-fold layout checks; full-page captures are appropriate when the entire scrollable layout matters.
Choose manual checks, automation, or both
| Approach | Best for | Viewport and capture | Comparison | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome DevTools | Fast exploratory resizing and inspection | Enter or drag dimensions; capture viewport or full size | Inspect saved images manually | Manual workflow; device emulation is not a physical phone |
| Playwright Test | Repeatable checks during test runs or in CI | Set explicit dimensions or use device descriptors; viewport by default, full page with fullPage: true |
toHaveScreenshot() compares with a reference |
Rendering varies by browser and host environment; emulation remains emulation |
Use DevTools to explore a design and identify likely failure widths, then put important cases into Playwright so they are checked consistently. Add a physical device check when behavior depends on real hardware or platform details.

The screenshot differs on every run
Check for changing data, animations, fonts or image loading, and inconsistent browser or host environments. Fix the underlying variability where practical; mask or hide only content that is genuinely irrelevant to the layout assertion.
A layout breaks between tested widths
Add captures just below and above the breakpoint where the arrangement changes. A handful of common presets may miss failures in the transition range.

The screenshot omits content
A regular screenshot captures the visible viewport. If the question concerns content farther down the page, use DevTools’ full-size capture or Playwright’s fullPage: true.
A passing emulation check does not match a phone
Device Mode and device descriptors approximate device settings; neither makes the test run on physical mobile hardware. Validate on the actual phone or tablet when hardware or platform behavior is important.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-request endpoint accepts a URL and returns a screenshot or PDF; use a viewport parameter for each width in your matrix. For example, this cURL call captures a page:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for viewport parameters and the other capture options. You can also make the same request from Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Or from Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
