Before launching a coding agent, test four separate things from the environment that will run it: that it can reach the configured proxy, that the proxy accepts its authentication method, that the proxy can reach the agent provider’s endpoint with TLS validation intact, and that the agent can sign in to its own service. A successful request to one endpoint is useful evidence, but it does not prove that every agent feature or required host will work.
What a proxy preflight needs to prove
Proxy and agent authentication are separate layers. A proxy credential lets a client use the organization’s proxy; it does not supply the account, API key, or other credential the coding agent needs to reach its provider. Check both independently.
- Execution context: The shell, desktop app, editor, container, remote runner, or sandbox that will launch the agent sees the intended proxy settings.
- Proxy reachability and authentication: The client can connect to the proxy, and the proxy accepts the authentication method that client supports.
- Destination and TLS: The proxy can reach the specific provider endpoint, and the client trusts the endpoint’s certificate chain.
- Agent sign-in: The agent’s own documented login or credential check succeeds.
Use an endpoint documented for the exact agent and run the check from the same host, runner, container, or sandbox where the agent will run. A general internet request or a successful check in a different shell may not test the agent’s real route.
Run a provider-specific connectivity check
GitHub Copilot example
GitHub documents https://copilot-proxy.githubusercontent.com/_ping as a Copilot connectivity check. A reachable ping should return HTTP 200. For Copilot Chat, GitHub also identifies https://api.githubcopilot.com/_ping as an alternate endpoint. These are Copilot-specific addresses, not universal coding-agent health checks. See GitHub’s network troubleshooting guide.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
To test a direct route, GitHub’s example is:
curl --verbose -i -L https://copilot-proxy.githubusercontent.com/_ping
To route that request through an HTTP proxy, provide the organization’s proxy address and port:
curl --verbose -x http://YOUR-PROXY-URL:PORT -i -L https://copilot-proxy.githubusercontent.com/_ping
Do not try direct egress if organizational policy requires all traffic to pass through the proxy. A successful response shows that this request reached this endpoint at the time of the test; it does not establish access to every service the agent or its optional features use.
For other agents
Find the current endpoint or network requirements in the selected product’s official documentation, then test that exact destination. The consulted documentation covers Copilot, Claude Code, and the OpenAI CLI, but does not establish a single endpoint or command for every agent, version, or deployment. Use the official guide that matches your client and mode rather than reusing the Copilot ping address.

Check settings in the environment that will launch the agent
First identify the agent and version, client type, operating system, launch process, and whether the session is local, containerized, hosted, or sandboxed. Then inspect the effective proxy settings visible to that process, including any exclusion list such as NO_PROXY. A value present in an interactive shell may not reach an editor, desktop app, service, container, or remote runner.
Do not assume proxy-variable precedence or supported URL schemes are the same across products. GitHub Copilot and Claude Code document different configuration behavior. For example, GitHub says Copilot does not support an https:// proxy URL; Claude Code documents that SOCKS proxies are unsupported. The OpenAI CLI reference’s statement that HTTPS proxies are rejected applies to its documented mTLS mode, not every OpenAI product or authentication configuration. Check the applicable guidance: Copilot network settings, Claude Code enterprise network configuration, and the OpenAI CLI reference.
If a proxy URL includes a username or password, keep it out of command history, logs, screenshots, and support tickets. Follow your organization’s approved method for injecting secrets instead of hardcoding a password in a script.

Interpret errors by layer
| Observed result | What it may indicate | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| DNS lookup failure or connection refused | Name resolution, route, firewall, listener, or proxy address trouble. | Confirm the proxy hostname and port, whether the listener is reachable from this execution context, and relevant network policy. |
| Proxy authentication challenge or denial | Missing or rejected credentials, or an authentication method the client does not support. | Confirm the required method and the client’s documented support; check whether the credentials are available to the launching process. |
| Timeout or connection reset | Several conditions are possible, including network path, proxy, firewall, or destination behavior. | Record the destination and error details, then compare with proxy and firewall logs where available; do not treat the symptom alone as proof of a single cause. |
| Certificate-chain or signature error | The client may not trust a certificate chain used by TLS inspection or another intermediary. | Confirm the organization’s intended TLS-inspection policy and configure its approved CA trust as the product requires. |
| Successful HTTP response from the destination | This request got through to that endpoint. | Check any other required provider hosts and perform the agent’s own sign-in check. |
These are diagnostic clues, not definitive root-cause diagnoses. For Copilot network failures, GitHub recommends verbose curl output and editor diagnostics; share sanitized output with IT or support if needed.
Validate proxy authentication and TLS trust safely
Use an authentication method the client supports
Authentication capabilities vary. GitHub documents basic authentication and Kerberos for Copilot; Kerberos may require a valid service ticket and the correct service principal name. Claude Code documents basic credentials in the proxy URL and recommends a compatible gateway when advanced methods such as NTLM or Kerberos are required. Confirm requirements with your administrator and the product documentation instead of assuming a successful login in another application proves the agent client can authenticate.

Trust the approved certificate authority
Where TLS inspection is used, configure the organization-approved CA in the trust store or runtime configuration required by the client. GitHub documents OS trust and NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS; Claude Code documents bundled or system trust stores and NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS. Claude Code also documents client certificates for mutual TLS. Follow the exact product instructions for the client and session type.

Do not make certificate-verification bypass a routine fix. GitHub warns that ignoring certificate errors can create security risks. If the expected certificate chain is unclear, ask IT to confirm the intended inspection and CA configuration rather than weakening verification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Confirm endpoint policy and agent sign-in
Once the proxy route works, compare the agent’s current official host or allowlist requirements with firewall and proxy policy. Include optional services used by the particular workflow; hosted agents and sandboxes can have network rules separate from a local shell. GitHub’s references for the Copilot allowlist and cloud-agent environment describe GitHub-specific requirements, which can vary with deployment and enabled features.
Then use the selected agent’s documented login or credential-check procedure. For example, Copilot CLI has its own supported credential types and lookup order; GitHub documents that a classic personal access token is not supported for Copilot CLI. Proxy credentials and provider credentials serve different purposes. See GitHub’s Copilot CLI authentication guide.

Prepare useful, sanitized diagnostics
If the preflight fails, provide IT or vendor support enough detail to distinguish routing, proxy authentication, TLS, allowlist, and provider-login problems. Include:
- Agent, client, and version; operating system; and whether the run is local, hosted, containerized, or sandboxed.
- Proxy scheme and host, with usernames and credentials removed.
- Exact destination host and path, timestamp, and command shape.
- HTTP status or error class, and whether TLS verification succeeded.
- Verbose diagnostic output after removing tokens, passwords, authorization headers, private-key contents, and sensitive internal hostnames.
Never share credential-bearing proxy URLs or unredacted authorization data in a ticket or log.
