Use a staged verification path: build against an isolated Google Ads test-account hierarchy with credentials that cannot reach production, exercise read-only requests first, use validate_only=true for mutate methods that support it, and inspect any deliberately executed write in Change History. Then review version compatibility and, if the real question is campaign performance, run a separate Google Ads experiment. Test accounts are safe for much API and configuration work, but they do not serve ads or reproduce every production feature.
What this testing process is designed to prove
“Does my application send valid requests and handle the responses correctly?” is a software question. “Will this campaign structure, keyword set or bid strategy improve results?” is a marketing-performance question. They require different evidence.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The Google Ads API gives you several ways to answer the software question without immediately changing a live account: isolated test accounts, read-only retrieval, method-level request validation, and one-off REST calls. None of these proves that ads will serve, that traffic will arrive, or that a production campaign will meet a performance target. Those outcomes require an approved production change or a Google Ads experiment.
Google for Developers recommends using test accounts for development and testing. Its Next steps guidance also describes read-only calls, validate_only, and Change History as successive safeguards. Treat the workflow below as a gate: do not move to the next, riskier stage until the previous stage is clean.

1. Build an isolated test-account hierarchy
A test account is a Google Ads account created for API development. It does not serve ads, has no active billing, and cannot interact with production accounts. Test accounts belong under a separate test manager account; do not place them beneath your existing production manager account. Follow Google’s test-account procedure to create the test manager and one or more client accounts, and record each test customer ID.
Why the separate hierarchy matters
Customer IDs and manager relationships determine which accounts a credential can address. Keeping the hierarchy separate gives your test process a hard boundary: a bug that selects the wrong client ID cannot silently traverse your production manager tree when the test credential has no production access.
Account setup checklist
- Create the test manager through Google’s documented test-account flow.
- Create a test client account beneath that manager and note its customer ID in your test configuration.
- Give the test user or service account access only to this hierarchy.
- Keep production customer IDs out of test fixtures, sample configuration and automated tests.
- Document which capabilities are intentionally unavailable in the test environment before interpreting a passing test.
Google documents an operational limit of 50 test accounts in a test-manager hierarchy. It also says inactive test accounts can be deleted after one year, so retain the IDs and recreate accounts when a long-lived test environment is no longer available. These are account-management constraints, not API throughput guarantees.
What a test account cannot tell you
Because no ads serve, a test account has no serving metrics. Google identifies bid simulations, conversion uploads and billing among the features that cannot be tested there. A successful campaign creation or targeting request therefore demonstrates request and configuration behavior only; it does not demonstrate auction eligibility, impression delivery, conversion attribution, billing, or a realistic bid recommendation.
2. Use credentials that cannot modify production
Google explicitly recommends separate test credentials to reduce the chance that development code changes a production account. Create a dedicated test user or service account and grant it access only to the test manager and clients. For OAuth user authentication, create the refresh token while signed in as that test user. Store the client secret, refresh token and service-account key in your secret manager or protected environment variables; never commit them to source control.
Your OAuth client ID and client secret can normally be reused: they identify the application, while account permissions determine which Ads accounts that application can access. Reusing those application credentials is different from reusing a production user’s refresh token or a broadly authorized service-account key.
Credential checks before the first request
- Load the test credential into a clean environment with no production secrets present.
- Confirm the authenticated principal in your application logs without printing tokens or secrets.
- Set the test customer ID explicitly rather than deriving it from a production manager list.
- Attempt an innocuous read against the test customer and verify the response contains that customer’s ID.
- Make production credentials unavailable to the test job. A permission error is safer than an accidental production success.
Keep separate secret names, deployment variables and CI environments for test and production. This prevents a configuration fallback from turning a test run into a live mutation.

3. Start with read-only requests
Read-only calls are the lowest-risk way to test authentication, customer selection, query construction, pagination, parsing and error handling. Reports and campaign-setting retrieval are examples of requests that read data without mutating the account. Google’s Next steps page recommends beginning with these requests.
What to verify in a retrieval test
- Authentication: the refresh token or service-account flow obtains an access token and the API accepts it.
- Scope and customer selection: the request addresses the intended test customer and, where applicable, the correct login customer.
- Query syntax: selected resources, fields, filters and ordering are accepted by the API version you target.
- Response handling: your code handles streamed rows, empty results, nullable fields, enums and partial data without crashing.
- Pagination and retries: the client consumes all returned pages or stream messages and records failures in a way your deployment can monitor.
- Assertions: tests check stable properties such as resource names or field types rather than assuming that a test account has production-like metrics.
A read-only pass confirms that your application can communicate with the API and interpret the response. It does not exercise mutation-specific validation, authorization for writes, or the side effects of a change.
Keep test data deterministic
Seed only the minimum objects your retrieval tests need, and identify them by resource name or another stable test fixture. Avoid assertions such as “the report must contain impressions” because a test account does not serve ads. If a query legitimately returns no rows, treat an empty result as a valid response and test that branch deliberately.
4. Validate supported mutations without executing them
Many mutate requests expose the optional validate_only field. Set it to true when the method supports it. Google states: “When this field is set to true, the request is validated, but not executed, allowing you to check for errors without changing any data.” Validation can catch malformed resource names, missing required fields, invalid combinations and some policy violations.

In the client library or REST payload for a supported mutate method, include the method’s normal operations and add:
{"validate_only": true, "operations": [...]}
The exact operation schema depends on the service and API version; use the method reference and your client library’s generated types rather than copying a payload from an unrelated method. A successful response means the request passed the checks performed by that method. It does not create the object, return a serving result or prove that a later execution will succeed under changed account state.
Check method support instead of assuming it
validate_only is not universal. Google documents that GoogleAdsService.SearchStream does not support it because that method retrieves data rather than mutating it. Starting in version 25, Performance Max campaign generation for Smart campaigns also rejects validate_only. Consult the current method reference for every endpoint and version you use.

When a method does not support validation, keep the test read-only if possible, or use an isolated test account for a deliberately executed write. Do not add an unsupported field and assume the server will ignore it; the API may return an error, and your test should cover that result.

What validation does and does not cover
| Validation can help detect | Validation cannot establish |
|---|---|
| Malformed requests, missing required values, invalid field combinations and some policy errors. | That an object was created, because the request was not executed. |
| Whether the endpoint accepts the operation in the selected API version. | Serving, auction eligibility, impressions, clicks, conversions or billing. |
| Whether your application can parse a validation response and surface errors. | Whether another process will change account state before a real execution. |
Run validation against the same API version and representative resource configuration that production will use. Keep the validation response and error details in CI logs, but redact customer data and credentials.
5. Execute a controlled write only when necessary
Some behavior can be confirmed only by executing a mutation. If the method has no validation support, or if your code must test the returned resource name and subsequent retrieval, execute the write in the isolated test hierarchy. Use disposable names and the smallest possible operation.
Controlled-write procedure
- Confirm the process is using the test customer ID and test credential.
- Capture the intended operation in a reviewable log before sending it.
- Send one minimal mutation rather than a batch that is difficult to inspect.
- Check the response and retrieve the resulting resource with a read-only request.
- Record the request version, customer ID, resource name and error details without storing secrets.
- Clean up disposable objects if the test account supports the relevant removal operation.
After a write that you intentionally execute in an account, review the change in the Google Ads UI’s Change History. Google includes this review in its recommended next steps. Change History is evidence of an executed change; it is separate from validate_only, which skips execution and therefore creates no change to review.
6. Use REST tools for one-off checks
For a single endpoint investigation, REST can be faster than changing application code. Google’s Try out the REST interface documentation describes the REST reference “Try it!” tools for one-time requests, endpoint behavior checks and debugging.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsREST prerequisites
- A Google Ads developer token.
- The customer ID for the account you are testing.
- OAuth access to that account, using a test user or another deliberately scoped identity.
Use the REST tool to isolate a malformed field, inspect an error response or confirm the shape of a small request. It is not a substitute for automated tests: browser-based one-off calls do not exercise your application’s serialization, retries, logging or deployment configuration. For application development, Google recommends its official client libraries wherever possible; the REST reference is primarily a diagnostic and exploratory aid.
7. Build version review into the deployment gate
API compatibility is a separate risk from request correctness. Google’s versioning documentation distinguishes major and minor releases:

- Major versions can introduce backward-incompatible changes and use separate endpoint paths.
- Minor versions are backward-compatible and update the major endpoint in place.
Google’s update guidance says it typically has three major releases and three major release sunsets per year and actively maintains only the three latest major releases. That is a published typical cadence, not a guarantee, so check the current schedule before planning an upgrade.
Version checklist
- Record the API version used by your client library and endpoint configuration.
- Read the relevant release notes; the currently surfaced notes include version 25.2 dated 2026-09-23.
- Read the upgrade guide for changed fields, removed resources, enum changes and method-specific behavior.
- Check the deprecation and sunset dates for the version in production.
- Run read-only and validation suites against the new version before changing the production deployment.
- Deploy with a rollback plan that keeps the previous compatible client available until the new version is proven.
A green test suite on an old version does not protect you from a breaking major-version change. Conversely, a minor-version update may be compatible but still require tests for newly returned fields or changed validation rules.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →8. Separate API correctness from campaign-performance testing
If your hypothesis concerns campaign structure, keywords, targeting or bidding performance, API validation is the wrong measurement. A request can be perfectly valid and still produce a campaign that performs poorly, while a high-performing campaign can be created by code that contains an untested edge case.
Google Ads experiments provide a performance workflow. The Experiments overview describes splitting traffic between a control and a treatment and comparing their results. Use that workflow to evaluate a marketing hypothesis after the API implementation has passed software-level checks.
Choose the test by question
| Question | Appropriate test | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Can the application authenticate and parse responses? | Read-only request in a test account. | Communication and response handling work for the tested case. |
| Is this mutate payload structurally and policy-valid? | validate_only=true on a supporting method. |
The API accepted its validation checks without executing. |
| Does the endpoint return the expected object after a write? | Minimal executed write in an isolated test account. | The mutation and follow-up retrieval worked in that non-serving account. |
| Will a campaign change improve results? | Google Ads experiment with control and treatment. | The tested traffic split produced comparative performance results. |
Do not present a test-account pass as evidence of live performance. Test accounts have no serving metrics and cannot reproduce billing, conversion uploads, bid simulations and other production-only behavior identified by Google.
9. A practical pre-deployment sequence
Use this order for a change that introduces or modifies API calls:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Pin the version. Record the client-library and endpoint version, then check current release notes and sunset dates.
- Point configuration at the test hierarchy. Use a test customer ID and fail if a production ID appears in the test environment.
- Authenticate with test-only access. Verify the test user or service account and keep production refresh tokens unavailable.
- Run read-only tests. Check query syntax, response parsing, empty results, pagination and error handling.
- Run method-supported validation. Set
validate_onlytotrueon each supported mutate method and assert that expected errors are surfaced. - Exercise unsupported paths safely. For methods without validation, use a disposable test-account write or a REST “Try it!” request, depending on what must be proven.
- Inspect executed changes. Retrieve created resources and review Change History for every deliberate write.
- Promote with safeguards. Require code review, preserve a rollback version and keep production credentials in a separate deployment environment.
- Measure performance separately. If the change is a campaign hypothesis, design a control/treatment experiment rather than inferring results from API tests.
10. Common failure modes and the safe response
The test call changed a production account
Stop further writes, revoke or rotate the credential, identify the affected customer and operation from logs, and review Change History. The prevention is architectural: separate credentials, separate configuration and a test hierarchy that cannot access production. Do not rely on developers remembering to change a customer ID manually.
Best Value
validate_only returns an unsupported-field or method error
Check the method reference and API version. Remove the field for methods that do not support it, then use a test-account execution only if the behavior genuinely requires a write. Remember that SearchStream is read-only and does not support validate_only; the documented version-25 Smart-campaign Performance Max generation flow also rejects it.
Validation succeeds but the real write fails
Validation is not a reservation of account state. Between validation and execution, another process can consume a resource, permissions can change, or account conditions can differ. Handle execution errors as a normal branch, re-read current state where appropriate, and make retries idempotent according to the method’s documented behavior.
A query returns no rows or no metrics
That is expected for many test-account queries because test accounts do not serve ads. Test the empty-result path and validate field shape instead of requiring impressions, clicks or conversions.
A version upgrade breaks compilation or requests
Read the release notes and upgrade guide, update generated client types and rerun the test suite against the new version. If the change is major, expect compatibility work; if it is minor, still test changed fields and validation rules. Do not wait until the sunset date to discover that the deployed version is no longer maintained.
The REST “Try it!” request works but the application fails
Compare the exact customer ID, login customer, OAuth identity, headers, request body and API version. REST proves that one authenticated request can work; it does not prove that your application is constructing the same request or handling its response correctly.
11. What to keep in the test record
A small, durable record makes failures diagnosable without exposing secrets. For each test run, retain:
- API version and client-library version.
- Test customer ID and the non-production credential identity.
- Whether the call was read-only, validation-only, REST exploratory or an executed write.
- Request operation names and sanitized payload characteristics.
- Response status, resource names and structured error details.
- For executed writes, the Change History review result.
- For performance experiments, the control/treatment definition and the measurement window.
Never store access tokens, refresh tokens, client secrets or private keys in these records. Keep enough metadata to reproduce the scenario with fresh credentials.

12. The limits of a “green” pre-deployment check
A complete software check can show that your code authenticates with the intended identity, sends a method-valid request, handles responses and avoids mutating production during testing. It cannot turn a non-serving test account into a production simulator. Auction behavior, delivery, conversion attribution, billing and other unavailable features remain unverified until an appropriately controlled production workflow is used.
That distinction is the reason for the staged approach: isolate account access first, reduce calls to read-only retrieval, validate supported mutations without execution, use a deliberately scoped write only when necessary, inspect every executed change, and reserve experiments for questions about campaign outcomes. Recheck Google’s documentation whenever versions, access requirements or test-account behavior may have changed.
