Test help and a valid invocation too. There is no universal “agent” CLI standard, so decide what the program is supposed to do before asserting exact messages or exit codes.
What to test at the command boundary
Test the executable the way a user or another program invokes it, rather than testing only an internal argument-parsing function. Include the input cases that matter to the interface:
- Missing required positional argument: invoke the command without a required operand.
- Missing required option: omit an option only if the CLI explicitly defines it as required. Required options can surprise users; a positional argument or sensible default may fit better when appropriate.
- Unknown option: pass an unsupported flag.
- Unexpected positional value: add an extra operand if the interface disallows extras. Some commands intentionally accept additional values.
- Invalid type: provide a non-number where an integer is expected, for example.
- Invalid choice or subcommand: use a value outside the documented choices.
- Help and valid control: check the documented help flag and at least one representative valid invocation.
Python’s argparse tutorial demonstrates missing positional input, unrecognized arguments, help output, and successful parsing with a supplied positional value. Those examples describe argparse, not a contract shared by every command-line agent.
Define the expected behavior before writing assertions
For each case, specify what constitutes rejection, which stream should contain the diagnostic, what status is expected, and whether the requested operation must remain unperformed. Assert an exact code or full error string only when the target program documents it or deliberately defines it as part of its interface.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Zero conventionally signals success and nonzero signals an error, but the meaning of a particular nonzero code depends on the command and its environment. Click’s CLI documentation describes that convention and qualification. A shell or test runner may also have its own status meanings: pytest’s exit-code reference, for example, lists codes for its own outcomes. Do not mistake those for recommended application codes.
Run the executable and inspect each result
In Python tests, subprocess.run() can invoke the command with an argument list and return a CompletedProcess. Set capture_output=True to capture both streams and text=True to receive text rather than bytes. Then check the fields independently:

returncodefor the child process’s exit status;stderrfor error diagnostics when the contract sends them there;stdoutfor output that should or should not appear on a failing path.
A direct argument list avoids involving a shell, which makes it easier to isolate the CLI’s argument handling. Use shell=True only when shell behavior is itself part of what you are testing. Python documents these mechanics in its subprocess.run() reference; they do not dictate what a particular program must print.
Example: a process-level test in Python
Adapt the executable path, arguments, and expected message to the CLI’s documented contract. This example checks a missing required positional value and verifies that the command rejects it without writing to a temporary output location:

import subprocess
result = subprocess.run(
["my-agent", "--output", str(output_path)],
capture_output=True,
text=True,
)
assert result.returncode != 0
assert "input" in result.stderr.lower()
assert result.stdout == ""
assert not output_path.exists()
Here, output_path should refer to a harmless temporary fixture, and the example assumes the program documents the missing input in its error text and writes no ordinary output on failure. If the CLI specifies a precise status or diagnostic, assert that exact value instead of the broader checks shown. Use a stub or test double for downstream operations when that is safer or more reliable than observing a file.
Use a test matrix to avoid blind spots
| Input case | Example invocation shape | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Required positional omitted | Run with no positional value | Expected rejection, a diagnostic that identifies the missing value, and no main action |
| Required option omitted | Leave out an option defined as required | Expected rejection and useful error; include only if the interface actually requires the option |
| Unknown option | Add an unsupported flag | Rejection, diagnostic, and no unintended action |
| Unexpected positional value | Add an extra operand | Rejection if extras are disallowed; otherwise the documented handling |
| Invalid type | Use text where an integer is required | Rejection or documented conversion behavior; no action if rejected |
| Invalid choice or subcommand | Supply a value outside the documented choices | Error names the invalid value or valid choices if the CLI promises that |
| Help | Use --help or the documented equivalent |
Expected successful help path and usage/options text |
| Valid control | Supply a representative valid invocation | Successful status and expected behavior |
A valid control is important: negative cases alone could pass because the executable is broken for every input. Keep side-effect checks tied to safe fixtures or controlled downstream dependencies.

What argparse does—and what it does not establish
With Python’s argparse defaults, invalid arguments normally produce an error on standard error and status code 2. The argparse reference documents required=True for options and choice-based validation as well. The status and output behavior are framework-specific; do not impose them on a different parser or on a program that documents another contract.
The same reference documents exit_on_error, added in Python 3.9, for callers that want to handle certain parsing errors manually. Check the project’s supported Python version before relying on it. Framework details help explain expected behavior, but the process-level test should still verify the actual executable’s interface.

Keep argument boundaries intact
Pass each argument as a separate element in the invocation list. This matters for all CLIs, and even GNU Coreutils’ test utility specifies that each expression part must be a separate argument. Its status meanings apply to that utility alone; the shell’s test command is not a general CLI testing framework. See the GNU Coreutils test manual.
