Use Bitcoin Core regtest with two local Lightning nodes for the safest, most repeatable payment-flow test. Regtest gives you a private blockchain and control over block creation, so you can create invoices, pay them, inspect settlement, and repeat the process without exposing real bitcoin. Move to public Lightning testnet only when public peers, shared-network routing, or testnet-specific services are part of what you need to prove.
Choose the network that matches the behavior you need to test
A network name is not a safety guarantee by itself. Your choice determines which parts of a payment flow are deterministic and which depend on infrastructure outside your control.

| Environment | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin Core regtest | Local, repeatable tests with controlled block creation and no random peers | An isolated private chain does not exercise public-network connectivity or shared-network conditions. |
| Implementation-specific local simulation, such as LND simnet | Local development flows and integration checks tied to one Lightning implementation | Behavior is specific to that simulator and implementation. |
| Public testnet, including testnet4 where supported | Interaction with public peers, shared routing and testnet infrastructure | Blocks, peers, funding and public services are outside your control; faucet reliability is not guaranteed. |
Bitcoin Core describes regtest as a new private blockchain with the basic rules of testnet, except that you decide when blocks are created. Core Lightning recommends experimenting on testnet4 or regtest. LND documents both testnet and regtest backends and provides a locally mined simulation for development.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use this decision rule:
- Choose regtest when the question is “Does my application create, pay and account for an invoice correctly?”
- Choose a local simulator when you need automated checks for one implementation’s APIs or wallet behavior.
- Choose public testnet when the question includes public peer discovery, real routing conditions or a testnet-only service.
Define the safety boundary before starting
Keep test credentials, wallets and node data separate from every mainnet installation. A testnet or regtest label should be verified in the node’s actual network configuration rather than assumed from a wallet screen or a filename. Bitcoin Core and LND document separate network settings for testnet and regtest; check the setting exposed by the exact version you are running.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Use fresh test-only keys and data directories.
- Never paste a mainnet seed, private key or recovery phrase into a test setup.
- Use a local-only regtest network for the first pass, then add public testnet deliberately.
- Record which node is the sender and which is the receiver so balance assertions cannot be reversed.
- Keep application logs free of seeds, invoice secrets and payment preimages unless the test explicitly requires a protected fixture.
Testnet coins are intended for development rather than value transfer, but they can still be lost or become unavailable when public infrastructure changes. Do not treat testnet as a place for funds you need to recover.
Build the smallest useful test topology
Run a local Bitcoin backend
For a deterministic workflow, run Bitcoin Core in -regtest mode. Regtest gives the backend its own private chain and lets the test operator create blocks when the test needs confirmations. This removes dependence on random peers and unpredictable block arrival.
If you select public testnet instead, configure the backend for the intended testnet network and verify that setting from the node’s status information. Do not infer the network solely from an address prefix or a third-party wallet’s label.
Run two Lightning nodes
You need a receiving node and a sending node. Core Lightning documents a local two-node regtest helper, while LND documents local simulation and test-focused options. Use the setup documented for your implementation and version; the important property is that both nodes use the same intended backend network and can reach each other.
Give the nodes distinct names in your test notes. A simple convention such as receiver and sender prevents a common error: paying from the node that created the invoice and then interpreting the result as a routed payment.
Connect the nodes and make liquidity available
Establish a peer connection
Connect the sender and receiver as peers, then inspect the peer list from the implementation’s status interface. Core Lightning uses listpeers to inspect channel and peer state. Do not proceed while the peer is disconnected or the channel is still in a transitional state.
Open and confirm a channel
Open a channel in the direction required by the payment. A payment needs usable outbound liquidity on the sending side and a route to the receiving side. In a two-node local test, the direct channel is usually the route; in public testnet, additional peers and routing conditions may be involved.

Confirmation requirements are not universal. Core Lightning’s documented confirmation counts differ between testnet and mainnet, and other implementations may use different policies. Treat the value shown in your stack’s current documentation as authoritative instead of copying a number from another network or implementation.
Wait for a usable channel state
Check the channel state through the node API or command-line status output. A funding transaction being broadcast does not necessarily mean the channel can carry a payment. Your test should begin only after the state reports that the channel is usable according to that implementation’s rules.
Create an invoice on the receiving node
Lightning payment flows are invoice-based. On the receiving node, create an invoice for the amount and purpose your application is expected to handle. Save the complete payment request as a test artifact; truncating it can turn a valid test into an invalid-invoice test by accident.
For an API-based integration, capture the response fields your application consumes. LND’s AddInvoice API returns a payment request and exposes invoice state, including whether it has settled. Other implementations expose equivalent concepts under different field names, so map them explicitly in your adapter rather than assuming identical JSON.

- Record the requested amount and any description your checkout flow displays.
- Mark the invoice as unpaid before the sender attempts payment.
- Ensure the receiver is the node that created the invoice.
Do not log a payment preimage in a public or shared log. The preimage is the receiver-side proof associated with a settled Lightning payment.
Pay the invoice from the sending node
Pass the complete payment request to the sender through the same application path used in production, but with test credentials and test configuration. This catches errors that a direct command-line payment can hide, such as an incorrect network selector, malformed invoice parsing or a callback that is never invoked.
Lightning Labs’ development tutorial demonstrates invoice creation and payment in a simulated workflow, including a routed payment. Use the equivalent payment operation for your implementation and capture the result returned by the sender. A successful command return is useful, but it is not the only assertion you need.

For a routed payment, verify that the sender selected a route and that the payment result corresponds to the invoice you created. For a direct two-node regtest channel, the route is simpler, but your application should still handle a payment failure rather than assuming every local payment succeeds.

Prove that the payment settled
Check both ends of the flow. A sender-side success message alone does not prove that your receiver credited the correct account.
- Read the receiver’s invoice state and confirm that it is settled. In LND’s API, the settled field is an explicit receiver-side signal.
- Inspect the receiver’s credited balance or transaction record and match it to the invoice amount and identifier.
- Inspect the sender’s channel balance and confirm the expected debit, allowing for the fee policy of the route.
- Confirm that your application emitted its own success event only after the receiver-side condition it relies on was met.
- Store a correlation identifier linking the checkout, invoice, payment result and settlement record.
Core Lightning and LND documentation both describe checking balances after payment. Balance changes are a useful second signal, but they should not replace invoice-state verification: fees, concurrent payments and accounting timing can make a raw balance delta ambiguous.
Exercise failure paths deliberately
A payment-flow test is incomplete if it covers only the happy path. Run each negative case in the same controlled environment so that a failure can be reproduced.
Expired invoice
Create an invoice with a short expiry and attempt payment after it expires. The sender should receive a failure, and the receiver must not mark the invoice as settled. Your application should show a retry or new-invoice path rather than crediting an order from a stale request.

Use a deliberately invalid payment request in a test fixture. Confirm that parsing fails before any payment attempt and that the application records a useful error without exposing secrets.
Missing route or insufficient available balance
Remove the route, reduce usable channel liquidity or request more than the sender can deliver. The expected result is a payment failure with no receiver credit. Distinguish a temporary route failure from a permanent invoice or configuration error in your application’s error handling.

Duplicate invoice submission
Submit the same invoice twice through the application. LND’s API documentation states that duplicate invoices are rejected. Your integration should treat the second submission as idempotent from the order’s perspective: it must not create a second credit or move an order back to an unpaid state.
Channel close and reopen behavior
Where your product supports channel lifecycle changes, close the channel in the test environment and verify how pending orders, balance displays and retry logic behave. The Lightning Labs tutorial includes channel closure in its simulated workflow. Reopen or recreate the channel before repeating payment assertions.
Record which failure cases you actually execute. A documented test plan is not evidence that a failure path has been run.
Test BIP 321 proof-of-payment callbacks safely
If your checkout uses BIP 321 proof of payment, treat the callback as security-sensitive application behavior. Lightning does not have a global transaction ledger equivalent to an on-chain payment, so a Lightning proof mechanism needs a separate way to communicate payment evidence.
For a Lightning payment represented by a BOLT 11 invoice in the URI, BIP 321 identifies the payment preimage, encoded in hexadecimal, as the payment information. Your application must still validate the callback context and the invoice it belongs to; receiving a preimage string is not, by itself, an authorization to credit an unrelated order.
- Validate the callback URI scheme before opening it.
- Keep the callback local to the intended installed application.
- Reject an unsupported required callback behavior as the standard specifies instead of silently continuing.
- Do not open an arbitrary remote URI that could launch a browser or another unapproved handler.
- Verify that the callback’s invoice, amount and order identifier match the payment being completed.
- Test behavior when the callback is missing, malformed, unsupported or deliberately remote.
The standard’s callback rules are requirements for your implementation to check; they are not a guarantee that a particular wallet enforces them identically. Keep wallet-specific behavior out of automated assumptions unless that wallet’s current official documentation confirms it.

Make the test repeatable
Regtest is valuable because the same starting conditions can be recreated. After each scenario, record the node network, channel state, invoice data, payment result and settlement state. Reset test data when the scenario depends on a fresh channel or unused invoice.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Use a fixed test amount for baseline runs and a separate amount for fee and liquidity cases.
- Keep sender and receiver roles stable within a test case.
- Capture timestamps for invoice creation, payment submission and settlement observation.
- Make retries explicit so a delayed status read is not mistaken for a second payment.
- Archive only non-sensitive diagnostics; remove seeds and unnecessary preimages from retained logs.
When a test passes locally, repeat the relevant cases on public testnet only if public behavior is part of the requirement. Public testnet introduces variables that regtest intentionally removes, so a failure there does not automatically mean the invoice or application logic is wrong.
Diagnose common failures
The invoice cannot be paid
- Verify that sender and receiver are on the same intended network.
- Check that the receiver’s invoice has not expired and was copied in full.
- Inspect peer and channel state; a funded transaction may still be awaiting the required confirmations.
- Check outbound liquidity and route availability on the sender.
The sender reports success but the order remains unpaid
- Read the receiver’s invoice state directly instead of trusting a sender-only event.
- Check that your webhook or callback is correlated with the correct invoice identifier.
- Inspect application logs for a dropped settlement event or a failed callback validation.
- Do not manually credit the order until the receiver-side evidence is reconciled.
The test behaves differently on testnet and regtest
That difference may be the behavior you intended to measure. Regtest has controlled blocks and a private peer set; public testnet has changing peers, routes, block timing and service availability. Compare network configuration first, then compare channel state and liquidity before changing application code.
Funding is unavailable
Bitcoin’s developer documentation names a community faucet for on-chain testnet satoshis, and a Lightning Labs tutorial mentions a testnet Lightning faucet as a possible exercise. Those references do not establish that either service is currently operating. Do not promise a working faucet or build a release test that depends on one without verifying it at the time of use.

A local two-node regtest test can prove that your application handles invoice creation, payment submission, receiver settlement and accounting under controlled conditions. It can also expose duplicate handling, expiry logic, callback validation and channel-lifecycle bugs.
It cannot prove that public peers will advertise the same routes, that a public faucet will remain available, or that every third-party wallet will interpret callbacks and invoice states the same way. Those questions require a separately configured public-testnet test and current documentation for the exact wallet and node versions involved.
For most development work, start with regtest, verify both sides of every payment, then promote only the scenarios that depend on public connectivity to testnet4 or another currently supported public test network.
