The most repeatable way to test an Android Auto app across displays is Google’s Desktop Head Unit Emulator (DHU), configured with several resolutions, margins, DPI values, content insets and input modes. Use it to find clipping, truncation, spacing and focus defects on a development machine, then confirm the user experience in a real vehicle. The DHU tests Android Auto projection from a phone; it is not the Android Automotive OS emulator, which is a separate platform with its own display profiles.
What the DHU can—and cannot—tell you
Android Auto renders a phone app on a vehicle’s infotainment display. The Desktop Head Unit Emulator reproduces that projection connection on Windows, macOS or Linux, so a developer or QA engineer can exercise the app without repeatedly moving a car between test builds. Google documents the DHU as the desktop tool for Android Auto testing; its configuration controls let you vary video resolution, frame rate, DPI, margins and content insets. See Android Developers’ Desktop Head Unit documentation.

Those controls make the DHU useful for coverage, not for declaring that every vehicle is supported. A vehicle may have a different aspect ratio, bezel, safe area, touch implementation, rotary controller or system behavior. Treat the emulator as a reproducible screen-and-input laboratory, and treat a real vehicle as the final integration environment.

Android Auto versus Android Automotive OS
Keep the platforms in separate test plans. Android Auto is a projection experience: the app runs on a connected Android phone and its interface is sent to a compatible head unit or the DHU. Android Automotive OS runs directly on the vehicle’s operating system. Google’s Automotive OS emulator uses vehicle system images and hardware profiles, including landscape, portrait and ultrawide layouts, and it can create custom profiles for configurations not covered by the supplied profiles.

An Automotive OS profile is not an Android Auto screen preset. If your product targets both platforms, maintain separate test cases, builds or capability checks as appropriate, and label every result with the platform that produced it.
Prepare the Android Auto DHU
Install the required software
- Install Android Studio and open the SDK Manager.
- In SDK Tools, select the Android Auto Desktop Head Unit Emulator package and complete the installation.
- Install your debug build on an Android phone that supports Android Auto, and install or update Android Auto on that phone.
- Enable the phone’s developer options and the USB debugging or connection settings required by your team’s device policy.
- Connect the phone to the development computer. Google documents USB accessory mode and ADB tunneling as connection options; choose the one supported by your operating system and device.
- Start the DHU using the launch instructions for your installed SDK package, then approve the phone’s prompts for USB debugging or Android Auto access.
Windows, macOS and Linux are supported. Linux DHU 2.x setup has an operating-system GLIBC requirement and additional library requirements, so check the environment-specific section of the current setup instructions rather than assuming a distribution’s default packages are sufficient.
Confirm the connection before testing layouts
- The DHU window should show the Android Auto surface rather than a disconnected or waiting state.
- The phone should identify the development computer as an Android Auto connection.
- Your app should launch through the normal Android Auto app picker or task flow, subject to its declared category and capabilities.
- Install the same debug artifact you intend to exercise; a stale APK can make a layout defect appear fixed when only the build changed.
Do one short smoke test before changing display settings. Navigate into the app, open a representative screen, trigger its primary action and return to the previous screen. This separates connection failures from later display or input failures.

| Dimension | Values to cover | Defects it can expose |
|---|---|---|
| Video resolution | 800×480, 1280×720 and 1920×1080 | Clipped text, controls that do not scale, incorrect density assumptions |
| Aspect ratio and visible area | Native preset plus margins that create narrower or shorter visible content | Pillarboxing, letterboxing, edge truncation and unsafe placement near boundaries |
| DPI | Several values appropriate to the target devices, including the project’s baseline | Unexpected text wrapping, oversized touch targets or content that no longer fits |
| Content insets | Zero and realistic left, right, top and bottom reserved areas | Headers, cards or buttons hidden behind system or vehicle areas |
| Frame rate | The baseline setting and any supported alternative used by your test target | Animation timing, transient states and perceived interaction problems |
| Input mode | Touch, rotary and hybrid | Lost focus, unusable selection order or behavior that depends on mouse clicks |
The three documented Android Auto video presets are 800×480, 1280×720 and 1920×1080. They are supported emulator resolutions, not a survey of the vehicle market. Start with the SDK’s sample configuration files, give each variant a descriptive name, and change one variable at a time while diagnosing a defect. Google’s configuration details are in Configure the DHU.

Model alternate aspect ratios with margins
The DHU can add horizontal and vertical margins around a supported resolution. This is a practical way to approximate a display whose visible content is a different shape from the preset. The margin reduces the usable region; it is not extra app space.
- To emulate a 1000×600 visible screen, use the 1280×720 preset with 280 pixels of total width margin and 120 pixels of total height margin. The resulting margins are 140 pixels on each side and 60 pixels above and below.
- To emulate a 750×450 visible screen, use 800×480 with 50 pixels of total width margin and 30 pixels of total height margin. That produces 25 pixels on each side and 15 pixels above and below.
Use these examples as configuration patterns, then add cases that represent the layouts your product team actually supports. Inspect both sides of a screen: a layout can look correct at the top-left while its bottom action is clipped after the usable height is reduced.
Vary DPI and content insets deliberately
Resolution describes the video surface; DPI influences how large UI elements and text appear within that surface. Content insets reserve space that the app must not occupy. Keep the variables distinct in your matrix. If a test changes resolution, DPI and insets simultaneously, a failure will be hard to attribute.
For a diagnosis, hold the resolution and margins constant, change DPI, and rerun the same screen. Then restore DPI, change one inset, and rerun it again. Record the exact values and the resulting line breaks, card heights, button positions and scroll boundaries. Android’s general screen and window guidance provides additional background on testing different sizes at Test different screen and window sizes, but the DHU settings remain the source of truth for this Android Auto run.
Exercise every supported control mode
Touch mode
In touch mode, tap every actionable element at the edges of the visible area, not just the central controls. Check that hit targets remain reachable after margins and insets are applied, that a tap produces a visible state change, and that a disabled or unavailable action cannot be activated accidentally.

Rotary mode
Rotary mode models a vehicle controller that moves focus and activates the selected item. In this mode, mouse clicks are ignored; keyboard controls simulate rotary operations. Test the initial focus, the order in which focus moves, selection, back behavior and navigation into and out of nested screens. A screen that is visually perfect can still be unusable if the focus skips its primary action or becomes trapped in a list.
Hybrid mode
Hybrid mode lets the test cover products that expose both touch and rotary interaction. Repeat the critical path after switching between interaction styles. Verify that focus is restored sensibly after a touch action, that a rotary selection does not leave a stale highlight, and that back or navigation behaves consistently.
The DHU’s modes provide controlled input variants; they do not prove that every vehicle manufacturer implements a controller identically. Label a pass as “DHU rotary” or “real-vehicle rotary,” not simply “rotary supported.”
A repeatable test procedure
- Choose the test slice. Select one app version, one category checklist and one DHU configuration. Include the app state you want to test, such as first launch, signed-in use, an empty list, a populated list, an error state and a long-running playback or navigation state where relevant.
- Start from a clean, known state. Note the phone model, Android version, app version, DHU version and configuration filename. Clear or seed data consistently so a second tester can reach the same screen.
- Run the primary journey in touch mode. Launch the app, complete its main task, open every screen in that journey and return to the starting point. Watch for text truncation, clipped icons, controls outside the safe area, unexpected scrolling and state changes that are visible only after rotation or reconnection.
- Repeat in rotary mode. Use the keyboard controls documented for the DHU to move focus and activate items. Note the first focused element, focus order, selection feedback, back navigation and any dead ends. Do not substitute mouse clicks; they are ignored in rotary mode.
- Repeat in hybrid mode when applicable. Mix touch and rotary actions at transitions where a real driver might do so, such as selecting a list item by touch and then using the controller to move through the next screen.
- Change one display variable. Switch to the next resolution, margin, DPI or inset configuration while keeping the app state and scenario constant. Re-run the same journey instead of exploring randomly.
- Check dynamic content. Use the longest supported title, the largest expected count, an empty state, an error message and any localized or user-generated text your requirements allow. These cases reveal wrapping and truncation that a short English label may hide.
- Capture evidence. Save a screenshot or recording, the configuration values, the exact step that failed, expected behavior, observed behavior and whether the issue reproduced after restarting the DHU or reconnecting the phone.
- Classify the result. Mark a finding as layout, input, state, performance or connection related. Do not close a layout bug merely because it passes at one preset; identify the smallest configuration that reproduces it and the largest one where it disappears.
What to record for reproducibility
A compact test record prevents “works on my head unit” disputes. For each run, capture:
- Phone model, Android version and Android Auto version.
- App build identifier, feature flags and seeded account or data state.
- Operating system on the development computer and DHU version.
- Preset resolution, total horizontal and vertical margins, resulting visible area, DPI, frame rate and each content inset.
- Input mode and the exact interaction sequence.
- Observed clipping or truncation, focus and selection behavior, navigation result and whether the issue reproduced.
- Screenshot or video filename and the defect’s severity, affected category requirement and owner.
Use stable configuration names such as aa-1280x720-m280x120-dpi-baseline-rotary rather than informal labels such as “small screen.” The name should identify the variables without requiring a separate conversation.

Test app states, not only a single happy path
First launch and permission states
Verify that onboarding, permission prompts and account setup remain usable in the available area. Test the path after a permission is denied or postponed; a narrow layout often exposes buttons that were positioned only for the first-run copy.
Empty, full and long-content states
Run an empty list, a list with the maximum expected number of items and entries with long titles. Check whether the user can reach every item with touch and rotary focus, whether the selected item remains visible, and whether scrolling stops at the correct boundary.
Errors, interruptions and recovery
Trigger an offline or service error, then restore the condition and retry. Disconnect and reconnect the phone where your test policy permits it. Confirm that the app returns to a safe, understandable state rather than leaving focus on an invisible element or displaying a truncated recovery action.
Category-specific behavior
Apply the quality checklist for the app’s declared car category to every configuration. A navigation, media, messaging or other category can have different interaction, distraction and content expectations. Google’s Car app quality page is updated over time; recheck the current criteria and any change notes before submission rather than relying on an old internal checklist.
Android Automotive OS requires a separate matrix
If the app also targets Android Automotive OS, create a second plan using the Automotive OS emulator and its vehicle system images. Google documents landscape, portrait and ultrawide hardware profiles and custom profile creation in Test using the Android Automotive OS emulator. The tests should cover the profiles that match your declared device support, plus any custom profile representing a known partner configuration.

Do not copy an Automotive OS emulator result into an Android Auto report. The platform, runtime location, system UI and connection path differ. A defect may exist on one platform and not the other, and a pass on an Automotive OS portrait profile says nothing about an Android Auto phone projection session.
Validate in a real vehicle before release
Google recommends testing the user experience in real vehicles before submitting an Android Auto app. Plan at least one pass on the environments available to your team, using an Android Auto-compatible head unit or vehicle where you have legitimate access. Treat that sample as limited coverage, not proof that every vehicle behaves the same.
Repeat the highest-risk scenarios from the DHU matrix: the smallest usable area, the longest text, rotary or hybrid navigation, connection and reconnection, and the category’s critical task. Compare the real result with the recorded DHU result. Differences in safe areas, controller behavior, animation timing or system interruptions should become explicit compatibility notes or defects.

For builds that are not ready for ordinary Play review, Google describes trusted distribution options such as Internal App Sharing and an Internal Test Track in its Test Android apps for cars overview. Use the distribution method permitted by your organization, and ensure the installed package is the same build tested on the DHU.
Troubleshoot common failures
The phone does not connect
- Confirm that Android Auto is installed and enabled on the phone and that the phone trusts the development computer.
- Try the other documented connection path—USB accessory mode or ADB tunneling—if the current path is unavailable.
- Restart the DHU and reconnect after accepting any USB debugging or Android Auto authorization prompt.
- On Linux, verify the GLIBC and library prerequisites for the installed DHU 2.x version.
The screen is clipped only in one configuration
- Reproduce it with the same preset and margins, then hold those values constant while changing DPI.
- Check content insets and the app’s assumptions about fixed width or height.
- Test the longest visible string and inspect both the first and last focusable elements.
Touch works but rotary does not
- Switch explicitly to rotary mode and stop using mouse clicks, which the DHU ignores there.
- Inspect focus order, initial focus, selection feedback and back navigation.
- Repeat after returning from a child screen; focus restoration often fails only after a nested navigation path.
The DHU passes but the vehicle fails
- Record the vehicle or head-unit environment, connection method and controller type instead of treating the result as a generic Android Auto failure.
- Compare safe areas, insets, focus behavior and system interruptions with the matching DHU scenario.
- Keep the real-vehicle finding open until you know whether it is an app defect, an unsupported capability or an environment-specific difference.
A practical minimum coverage plan
Teams with limited hardware can still make emulator coverage systematic. Run the critical journey on all three documented resolutions, one margin-based narrow profile, two DPI values, the baseline content insets and every input mode your app claims to support. Add the empty, full, long-text and error states, then perform a real-vehicle pass for the most important supported environment. Expand the matrix when a defect, customer device or quality requirement introduces a new variable.
Keep the matrix in version control beside the test cases. When a defect is fixed, rerun the exact reproducing configuration first, then a representative wide and narrow configuration and the real-vehicle scenario. This provides evidence that the fix addressed the underlying layout or interaction rule rather than only one screenshot.
