How to Test a Website with NVDA Screen Reader (Practical Manual Guide)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To test a website with NVDA, use a documented keyboard task in a supported browser, read the page in browse mode, operate every relevant control in focus mode, and record exactly what NVDA announces. This gives you reproducible evidence about the pages, browser, NVDA build, and tasks you tested. It is not, by itself, proof that an entire site conforms to an accessibility standard.

What this NVDA test can—and cannot—tell you

NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access) is a free Windows screen reader. A practical manual pass answers questions such as:

  • Can a keyboard user reach every control needed for a realistic task?
  • Does NVDA announce headings, links, field labels, instructions, states, and errors clearly?
  • Can the user understand where they are after a dialog, menu, validation message, or dynamic update?

The result applies to the specific operating system, NVDA build, browser version, pages, and tasks you record. Other browsers, screen readers, untested routes, and mobile assistive technologies may behave differently. Combine this review with automated checks, code inspection, and testing by people with relevant disabilities.

NV Access’s guide describes complex read-only documents such as web pages as being browsed in browse mode. The procedure below follows that model and uses the default commands documented in the NVDA 2026.3beta1 English guide. Because that is beta documentation, verify shortcuts against the build installed on your test machine.

1. Set up a reproducible test

Record the test combination

Before opening the target page, create a small test record containing:

  • Operating system and edition.
  • NVDA version and build (stable or beta).
  • Browser name and exact version.
  • Page URL, account state, language, and date.
  • The task you will perform, such as finding an article, submitting a search, registering, or opening a menu.

Use a clean browser profile when possible. If the task requires authentication, note whether you used a new, existing, or administrator account. Do not put passwords or personal data in the issue report.

Choose a realistic task

A page read from top to bottom can reveal structural problems, but a task exposes failures that a static reading misses. Write the intended outcome in one sentence: “Find the pricing page,” “Submit the contact form with one invalid field,” or “Open the account menu and sign out.” Include the starting URL and the expected end state.

Prepare a findings log

For each observation, reserve fields for the page and task, exact reproduction steps, expected announcement or operation, actual announcement or behavior, user impact, NVDA/browser versions, and a suggested priority. Quote the announcement accurately when it matters; distinguish silence from an announcement you did not understand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Read and map the page in browse mode

Start with an uninterrupted reading

Open the page and let it load. In browse mode, read from the current position through the page. Listen for a sensible title, introductory context, headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, landmarks, and the controls that belong to the task. Ask whether the information remains understandable without visual placement, color, or animation.

If a page is stale or partially loaded, refresh NVDA’s virtual document with NVDA+F5 and repeat the relevant section. A refresh does not fix an inaccessible page; it only asks NVDA to rebuild its browse representation.

Jump by semantic structure

Use single-letter quick navigation in browse mode to test whether the document has useful semantics:

Action Default command What to check
Next/previous heading h / Shift+h Heading levels form a meaningful hierarchy and identify sections.
Next/previous link k / Shift+k Link names make sense out of context and repeated links are distinguishable.
Next/previous form field f / Shift+f Fields are reachable and their labels and types are announced.
Next/previous landmark d / Shift+d Navigation, main, search, complementary, and other regions are useful rather than duplicated or missing.

These commands are configurable. If one does not work, confirm that focus is not inside a control, browse mode is active, and the command has not been remapped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the Elements List

Press NVDA+F7 to open the Elements List in supported browser documents. Switch its category among headings, links, form fields, buttons, and landmarks. Look for missing names, duplicate names, an illogical order, or a structure that does not match the visible page. The list is an inspection aid, not a replacement for completing the task.

3. Test keyboard movement and focus

Traverse the task with Tab

Starting at the task’s entry point, press Tab to move forward and Shift+Tab to move backward. NVDA should announce an actionable control’s accessible name, role or type, and relevant state such as checked, expanded, selected, disabled, or required. Compare the tab order with the visual and logical order.

  • Can you reach every control without a mouse?
  • Is the focused item obvious in the page and in speech?
  • Can you leave a menu, dialog, carousel, date picker, or custom widget?
  • Does focus move somewhere sensible after activation?

Use Enter or Space according to the control’s behavior. For native buttons and links, test both the expected activation key and the browser’s normal behavior. If a widget traps focus, document the exact key sequence that enters it and the sequence that should exit it.

Understand browse mode and focus mode

Browse mode is intended for reading and quick navigation through page content. Focus mode sends most keys to the active control, which is necessary for text boxes, menus, and other interactive widgets. NVDA may switch modes automatically when you enter a control. Press NVDA+Space to toggle modes manually. Press Escape to leave an automatically entered focus mode when the control supports that behavior.

Record mode confusion as a usability issue only when it blocks the task or makes the state unclear. A user should not have to guess whether a letter will move through the document or be typed into a field.

4. Test forms with NVDA

Enter representative values

Move through every field with Tab or the f quick-navigation command. NVDA should identify the label, field type, required state, current value where appropriate, and useful instructions. Test realistic valid data, boundary values, an omitted required field, an invalid format, and a server-side error if the form has one.

Check labels, instructions, and grouping

  • A label should identify the field without relying on nearby visual text.
  • Instructions such as accepted formats should be announced when they are needed, not only before the form.
  • Related radio buttons, checkboxes, and date fields should have an understandable group or legend.
  • Password and sensitive fields should not expose the entered value unnecessarily.

Trigger and recover from validation

Submit with one error at a time, then with several errors. Determine whether NVDA announces that submission failed, identifies each invalid field, explains the correction, and places focus somewhere useful. After correcting a value, verify that the old error is removed or updated. If the page updates without moving focus, navigate to the message and confirm that it is discoverable; if it moves focus unexpectedly, record where and why.

5. Test menus, dialogs, and dynamic content

Menus and disclosure controls

Activate each menu or disclosure with the keyboard. Listen for expanded and collapsed states, the number or names of available items, and a predictable way to close the control. Check whether focus enters the opened content and returns to the trigger after closing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dialogs

When a dialog opens, NVDA should announce an identifying title or label and focus should be contained until the task is complete or the dialog is dismissed. Test Escape, the close button, and any cancel action. After closing, confirm that focus returns to the control that opened it rather than jumping to the top of the page.

Live updates

Trigger search suggestions, cart updates, toast messages, inline validation, loading indicators, and error banners. Note whether the important change is announced at the right time, whether repeated updates become noisy, and whether the user can find the updated content with normal navigation. Do not treat a visually visible change as communicated merely because it exists in the DOM.

6. Record findings that developers can reproduce

Write each issue as an observation rather than a broad verdict. A useful entry contains:

  1. Context: URL, page state, task, and test combination.
  2. Steps: The exact keys and actions from a known starting point.
  3. Expected: What the user needed to hear or operate.
  4. Actual: The announcement, missing announcement, focus location, or keyboard result.
  5. Impact: What a screen-reader or keyboard user cannot understand or complete.
  6. Evidence: A short recording or transcript when policy permits, plus screenshots only when they clarify the visual state.

Examples include “The ‘Apply’ control is announced only as ‘button’,” “After an invalid submission, the error is visible but focus remains on an unrelated heading,” or “Tab enters the date picker but no key sequence leaves it.” Avoid declaring a WCAG success or failure unless you have mapped the observation to the applicable criterion and evaluated the full requirement.

7. Troubleshoot common NVDA test problems

Symptom Likely cause Fix
A letter types into a field instead of moving Focus mode is active. Press NVDA+Space to return to browse mode, or use the control’s own keyboard interaction.
Quick navigation does nothing Focus is in a control, browse mode is off, or the key was customized. Move to page content, toggle mode, and verify the Input Gestures settings.
The page sounds incomplete The virtual document is stale or content loaded after the initial parse. Wait for the load, then press NVDA+F5 and retest.
A control has no useful name Missing or incorrect accessible name, often from an icon-only button. Inspect the page implementation and provide a programmatic label; retest after the fix.
Focus disappears after an update DOM replacement or an uncontrolled focus script. Track the last announced item, trigger the update again, and report the exact focus destination.
Keys differ from this article NVDA build, browser, language, or customized gestures differ. Record the versions and confirm commands in the installed NVDA documentation.

8. Performance, coverage, and limits

Keep the manual pass focused on representative journeys, but include every page template and state that can change the outcome: signed-in and signed-out views, empty and populated lists, validation failures, permission errors, responsive layouts, and slow-loading content. Repeat critical tasks after major JavaScript or design changes.

Browser and screen-reader combinations are comparison axes, not interchangeable labels. A result from NVDA with one browser does not establish behavior in another browser or with a different assistive technology. The W3C material located for WCAG 3.0 is a Working Draft dated February 26, 2026, not a final standard; label it that way when discussing it. NV Access also offers an official Basic Training eBook covering web browsing and forms; its listing says it was revised in September 2026.

If you need screenshots of the pages you are documenting, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL through one request. It is separate from NVDA testing: use NVDA to hear and operate the page, and use a screenshot to preserve the visual state associated with a finding. Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

FAQ

Is an NVDA review an accessibility audit?

No. It is evidence from the tested NVDA, browser, pages, and tasks. Broader conformance requires additional methods and coverage.

Should I use stable NVDA or the beta build?

Use the build that represents your supported users, and record it. If you use 2026.3beta1 documentation, recheck commands because beta behavior can change.

Can I test a website without knowing HTML?

Yes. You can perform the keyboard and listening workflow without source access, although developers will need implementation details to diagnose many findings.
