How to Test a Progressive Web App: A Practical Checklist

Test your PWA as a website first, then verify its real install, offline, performance, accessibility, and optional API behavior across supported platforms.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test a progressive web app (PWA) as both a website and an installable, offline-capable app: verify real user tasks across your target browsers, then exercise installation, service-worker behavior, performance, accessibility, and each optional API the product actually promises. There is no single score that proves a PWA works everywhere. Chrome’s Lighthouse documentation now warns that PWA testing in Lighthouse is deprecated, so an old PWA badge is not a cross-browser certification.

Start with a browser and device test matrix

Progressive Web Apps are web apps first. Before checking installation or app-like features, open the deployed site as an ordinary website and complete its important tasks in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. Include only browser and operating-system combinations that matter to your users, but make the supported matrix explicit.

Choose test cases across the dimensions that affect behavior instead of blindly testing every possible combination:

  • Browser and operating system: cover each combination you claim to support.
  • Device and input: test a phone, tablet, or desktop where relevant; use touch and keyboard input as users would.
  • Visit state: check a fresh visit and a returning visit with stored data or a previously installed app.
  • Network: test online, slow or intermittent connectivity, and offline where the app claims support.
  • Route state: distinguish cached pages from routes or resources that have not been cached.
  • API availability: test both supported and unsupported cases for each optional browser capability used.

At narrow and wide viewport sizes, verify that content remains readable and every core task remains available. A page that renders is not necessarily usable: complete the actual flows, such as signing in, finding content, submitting a form, or viewing saved data. Essential functionality should not depend on an enhancement or API that some target browsers lack.

Check the manifest and installation on each platform

Inspect the manifest

Confirm that every relevant page links to the intended web app manifest and that the manifest loads successfully. For Chromium-based browsers, MDN lists these members for installability checks: name or short_name; 192-by-192 and 512-by-512 icons; start_url; display and/or display_override; and prefer_related_applications set to false or omitted. Serve the production app over HTTPS. For local development, localhost and 127.0.0.1 are allowed.

Perform the real install flow

Try to install the app using the actual flow available on every supported browser and operating system. After installation, check that the icon and app name are correct, launch the app, and verify that it opens the intended start route in the expected display mode. Also test that a deep link or return visit behaves as the product intends.

Do not assume that all platforms show the same prompt or use the same install mechanism. Desktop and mobile browser flows differ; Android may use WebAPK support, while iOS has its own installation flow. The MDN guidance inspected for this article says Chrome’s beforeinstallprompt event is not supported on iOS. A manifest is necessary for relevant install flows, but it is not proof that installation succeeds on every browser and device.

Test service-worker control and offline behavior

  1. Load online first. Visit the app normally and confirm the service worker registers without errors.
  2. Check control. Verify that the worker controls the pages and routes expected by the app, rather than assuming registration alone means all pages are controlled.
  3. Go offline. Use the browser’s developer tools or disable network connectivity on the test device.
  4. Reload the manifest start route. Confirm the start_url opens successfully after the needed resources have been cached.
  5. Visit a cached route. Check that the page and its important assets remain usable.
  6. Visit an uncached route. Verify the product gives a useful response, such as a clear offline page, instead of a blank screen or misleading partial interface.
  7. Exercise each offline promise. For example, test whether saved content is readable or whether a form can be prepared offline, but only expect behavior the product claims to support.
  8. Reconnect. Confirm that the app recovers and refreshes or synchronizes as intended.

Service-worker Cache and FetchEvent functionality can store and return responses. For apps that queue work, check that the interface clearly labels an action as queued or pending, and then verify synchronization when connectivity returns. Test conflict handling and duplicate prevention against the app’s own data rules; there is no universal expected outcome for those cases.

Measure loading and interaction performance

Check both cold loads and repeat visits. Pay attention to large assets, slow connections, and whether taps or other interactions respond promptly. Keep lab measurements separate from field data: web.dev points to Lighthouse performance audits, PageSpeed Insights, and the Chrome User Experience Report as different ways to assess performance, with field data reflecting real-user experience rather than a single lab run.

web.dev’s PWA checklist reports that as page load time increases from one second to ten seconds, the probability of a user bouncing increases by 123%. This is a web.dev figure, not a guaranteed effect for every individual PWA. Treat it as a reason to investigate slow paths, not as a prediction of your app’s conversion or bounce rate.

Include accessibility in release checks

Automated audits can surface some problems, but web.dev says most accessibility testing must be done manually. Use the app with a keyboard and check that focus order is sensible, focus is visible, controls are semantic, form fields have labels, and status messages communicate meaningful changes. Where applicable, test with screen readers on the platforms your product supports.

Lighthouse accessibility audits, axe, and Accessibility Insights can assist with partial automation; passing an automated check does not establish full accessibility conformance. Define the applicable WCAG version and any jurisdiction-specific requirements for your release rather than treating a tool score as a substitute for that decision.

Test optional APIs only when you use them

Notifications, sharing, background sync, IndexedDB, badges, and window-controls overlays are optional web capabilities, not universal PWA requirements. For each capability present in the product:

Use screenshots as visual evidence, not as a substitute for behavior tests

A screenshot can help compare layout and visible states across routes, viewport sizes, or release versions. It cannot establish that a button works, that an install flow succeeds, or that an offline action synchronizes correctly. Capture representative screens after the functional checks, and review them alongside the task results.

For a manual capture, open the deployed PWA in the browser and use its screenshot or developer-tools capture function at the viewport being tested. Record the browser, operating system, viewport, route, network state, and whether the visit is fresh or cached so the image has useful context. To capture a publicly reachable page through an API instead, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF; it is a visual capture aid, not a PWA conformance test. See ScreenshotNeo.

Or skip the browser setup

For a publicly reachable test page, a single request can save a screenshot locally:

Troubleshoot common failed checks

  • The app does not appear installable: check that the manifest link and manifest response are valid, confirm the required Chromium manifest members, and serve production over HTTPS. Then retry using the platform’s actual install flow; a manifest check alone does not prove installation works.
  • The installed app opens the wrong page: inspect the manifest’s start_url and verify the installed launch route directly, including whether that route can load its required assets after caching.
  • The offline page is blank or incomplete: confirm the service worker registered and controls the route, then inspect whether the route’s required responses were cached. Test uncached paths separately and provide a clear fallback for them.
  • An offline action disappears after reconnecting: distinguish a saved, queued action from a completed one in the interface, then validate the product’s synchronization, conflict, and duplicate-handling rules.
  • An install prompt or API is missing on one platform: do not treat that absence as a universal app failure. Check platform support and provide a usable fallback where the enhancement is unavailable.
  • An automated audit passes but users still encounter issues: reproduce the real task with the target input method and browser. Automated checks cover only part of usability, accessibility, and platform-specific behavior.

What Lighthouse can and cannot tell you

Chrome for Developers’ Lighthouse PWA documentation carries the warning, “Caution: PWA testing in Lighthouse is deprecated.” Lighthouse can still be useful for performance and partial accessibility checks, but do not present its former PWA badge or a passing legacy audit as current, comprehensive proof of installability or offline behavior. Test the behaviors directly on the browsers and devices you support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should every PWA work fully offline?

No. Offline support is a product promise, not a universal PWA requirement. Test and describe only the routes and tasks the app is designed to support without connectivity.

Does a successful service-worker registration mean the app is offline-ready?

No. Registration does not prove that the worker controls the expected routes or that their required resources and data are available offline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a screenshot API verify that a PWA is installable?

No. A screenshot records a visual state; installation and browser API behavior must be exercised in the relevant browser and operating system.
