How to Test a New Hard Drive’s Full Capacity and Catch Fake Storage

The reliable way to check a new hard drive is to combine two different tests: a manufacturer’s long, read-only diagnostic for sector and hardware problems, followed—when you need proof that the advertised space can actually store data—by a write-and-verify test across the target volume. A SMART pass or a quick surface scan alone cannot prove that every usable block accepts and returns data.

Protect anything important first, identify the exact disk by model and serial number, and treat any unverified drive as untrusted until testing is complete. If a write/read check fails, preserve the logs and stop using the disk for important files while you investigate a defective unit, connection problem, filesystem error, or possible counterfeit capacity.

Capacity testing and health testing answer different questions

“Does this drive have its advertised capacity?” and “Is this drive healthy?” are related but separate questions.

  • A capacity test writes known test data throughout the available filesystem space and reads it back. It checks the complete path from the operating system and filesystem, through the connection and drive electronics, to the recording media and back again.
  • A health diagnostic checks drive firmware, SMART data, or the ability to read sectors. It can reveal bad sectors and other warning signs without filling the volume with your own test files.

A drive can pass a SMART short test yet fail when data is written near the end of its address range. Conversely, a read error does not automatically prove that the advertised capacity is fake: failing media, an unstable USB bridge, a bad cable, or filesystem damage can cause the same symptom. Use both kinds of test when the purchase is new or the capacity is suspicious.

Prepare safely before running any test

Write tests can consume all free space, and raw-device tests can erase every partition. Preparation is therefore part of the test, not an optional precaution.

Identify the exact target

  1. Record the drive’s model, serial number, interface, and the capacity reported by your operating system or the manufacturer’s utility.
  2. Compare the selected device’s name and size immediately before starting a test. External enclosures may show a bridge name rather than the disk’s own model.
  3. Disconnect other removable drives if practical. This reduces the chance of selecting the wrong volume in a destructive utility.

There is no single click path that is safe for every Windows, macOS, and Linux release. Use the disk-management view or the drive maker’s utility for your operating system, and confirm the model and serial number rather than relying only on a drive letter.

Protect data and choose an empty target

Copy needed files to another verified location. A filesystem-level test may leave existing files alone, but it uses the remaining free space and can leave a damaged filesystem on a counterfeit or malfunctioning device. A raw-device test overwrites the selected device and removes partition information. Never run one against a system disk or a disk containing the only copy of your files.

Western Digital Support says SMART errors indicate drive-failure risk and are a signal to back up and replace the drive. Its SMART page was published on August 20, 2018 and updated June 10, 2026. Treat a warning as a reason to secure data before further testing, not as something to dismiss because the drive is new.

Use this order for a new-drive check

  1. Confirm identity and reported size. Write down the model, serial, connection type, and operating-system capacity.
  2. Back up or remove important data. Make sure the target has enough free space for a volume test, or use a disposable disk for a raw test.
  3. Run the manufacturer’s long diagnostic. Prefer the maker’s extended or long generic read test before any destructive procedure.
  4. Run a full-volume write-and-verify test when capacity is the question. Fill free space with known data, then read it back and inspect the report.
  5. Repeat with a different cable, port, or enclosure only when a failure could be connection-related. Keep the original log; a second pass does not erase the evidence of the first.
  6. Stop trusting the drive if errors remain. Save reports, screenshots, purchase details, model, and serial number for the retailer or warranty service.

What each test proves

Test What it establishes Data impact Documented scope and limits
SMART check or manufacturer short self-test Quick status and a limited internal self-test Seagate describes its SMART check and short DST as data-safe Health screening; it does not prove successful writes across the full volume
Manufacturer long generic test Reads every sector and can identify bad sectors or bad logical block addresses Seagate describes the long generic test as data-safe Thorough HDD surface-read diagnostic; runtime increases with capacity and drive speed
F3 f3write plus f3read Creates numbered test files, then validates their contents Writes test data into available filesystem space F3 documentation focuses on flash storage; use it on a hard drive only when its filesystem and interface are supported and the result is interpreted cautiously
CapacityTester volume test Writes and verifies test data through the filesystem Its documentation says existing files are not touched, but recommends an empty volume for reliable results Documentation targets USB flash drives and memory cards; a fake device may have a damaged filesystem afterward
CapacityTester raw-disk test Tests the whole device without relying on an existing filesystem Destructive: overwrites the device and wipes partitions Documented as somewhat experimental and flash-storage oriented; suitable only for a disposable, backed-up target

Run the manufacturer’s long diagnostic first

A long read test is the safest way to screen a new HDD for media and sector problems before filling it with files. Seagate’s SeaTools documentation describes the Long Generic Test as reading every sector and detecting bad LBAs without intentionally modifying user data. On the highest-capacity drives, Seagate estimates roughly three to five hours per terabyte; this is a manufacturer estimate, not a universal benchmark. Actual time depends on drive speed, capacity, connection, and system conditions.

  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

How to interpret the result

  • Pass: The drive completed the manufacturer’s read diagnostic under the tested conditions. This is reassuring for readable sectors, but it is not proof of full-volume write integrity.
  • Fail or bad LBA report: Preserve the code and log. Back up immediately and arrange replacement or warranty service unless a controlled retest demonstrates a clear cable, enclosure, or host problem.
  • Test interruption: Note whether the computer slept, the USB link disconnected, or the utility was stopped. An interrupted test is not equivalent to a pass.

Do not select erase, sanitize, or other write actions merely because they appear beside the data-safe diagnostics. Seagate’s guide lists erase operations separately; those operations can change or remove data.

Perform a full-volume write-and-verify test

When the goal is to prove that the advertised space can store and return data, use a tool that fills the filesystem with identifiable test data and then verifies it. The test occupies available space, so remove or move ordinary files first and allow for filesystem and partition overhead.

Using F3’s filesystem method

F3 8.0 documents a two-stage method: f3write fills a mounted filesystem with numbered test files, and f3read reads those files back and reports mismatches. The method is documented primarily for flash cards and USB flash media, so confirm that your operating system, filesystem, and hard-drive connection are supported before relying on it for an HDD.

  1. Mount the target volume and confirm its model, serial, and free-space figure.
  2. Run f3write against that mounted volume. Let it finish; stopping early tests only the portion that was written.
  3. Safely eject and reconnect the device before f3read when possible. F3’s documentation says reconnecting can reduce the chance that an internal cache masks lost writes. This advice comes from its flash-testing documentation and should be applied cautiously to other storage and interfaces.
  4. Run f3read and save the complete output. A clean verification means the test files read back as expected over the portion filled.
  5. Delete the test files only after saving the report and deciding that the volume itself is healthy enough to reuse.

A volume test validates filesystem-level writes and reads, not every raw physical location in isolation. File placement, fragmentation, reserved areas, and metadata affect where the files land. A successful run is strong evidence under that interface and filesystem, but it is not a lifetime reliability guarantee.

Using CapacityTester’s volume mode

CapacityTester describes a volume test for USB flash drives and memory cards that writes test data through the filesystem and verifies it without intentionally touching existing files. Its documentation still recommends an empty volume for reliable results, because a nearly full disk may not provide enough contiguous or usable free space and a counterfeit device can leave the filesystem damaged.

Do not treat this utility’s documented flash-storage scope as a universal HDD certification. If you use it on an HDD, record the operating system, filesystem, enclosure, and connection so a failure can be reproduced. A result that changes when the cable, port, or enclosure changes points first to the connection path rather than proving counterfeit media.

Understand raw-device tests before using one

A raw-device test addresses the entire addressable device and does not depend on an existing filesystem, but its destructive nature makes it unsuitable for a working computer or a disk containing needed files. CapacityTester explicitly warns that its raw-disk mode overwrites the device and wipes partitions. Its documentation also describes that mode as somewhat experimental and oriented toward flash storage.

Use raw testing only when all of these conditions are true:

  • The selected disk is disposable or fully backed up elsewhere.
  • You have verified the device by model, serial number, and capacity immediately before starting.
  • You understand that partition tables, filesystems, and recovery paths can be destroyed.
  • You have a plan to recreate partitions and format the disk after testing.

For most new HDD purchases, a manufacturer long read test plus a filesystem write-and-verify test provides useful evidence without making an irreversible first move.

Read the capacity number correctly

The number printed on a drive and the number shown as usable space in an operating system are not expected to match exactly. Manufacturers generally advertise decimal capacity, while operating systems and utilities may display units differently; partition structures, filesystem metadata, and reserved areas also reduce the space available for ordinary files. The size difference alone is therefore not proof of fraud.

Judge a drive by whether a controlled test can write and read the space that the operating system actually exposes. Do not convert a displayed value into a precise “missing” amount unless the unit convention, partition layout, and filesystem are known. The available evidence does not establish one universal discrepancy figure for every operating system and filesystem.

How to interpret a failed verification

A mismatch means that data written by the test was not returned exactly as expected. It does not identify the cause by itself.

Possible fake capacity

Counterfeit devices can report a large logical size while overwriting older data once the real memory limit is reached. Typical evidence is a repeatable pattern of corruption or missing files after the test passes the same apparent boundary, especially when the behavior follows the device across ports and hosts.

Defective media or electronics

Bad sectors, unstable heads, failing controller electronics, or a new drive damaged in transit can produce write or read errors. A manufacturer long test that reports bad LBAs strengthens the case for a defective drive even when counterfeit capacity is not established.

Connection, bridge, or power problems

USB cables, hubs, external enclosures, and insufficient power can interrupt transfers or reset a disk. Repeat a failed test only after changing one variable at a time: direct port instead of hub, known-good cable, different enclosure, or another computer. Keep the original failure report and label each retest clearly.

Filesystem trouble

A corrupted filesystem, permissions problem, or unexpected disconnection can invalidate a volume test without demonstrating a bad platter. Recreate the test volume only after preserving evidence and only when the data is backed up. Reformatting is a diagnostic change, not a repair that makes an untrustworthy disk safe.

Why a file offset is not a physical-sector diagnosis

In a volume-level test, the position of a failed test file does not map directly to a physical sector number. Filesystem allocation, fragmentation, translation layers, and enclosure behavior influence the physical location. Use the drive’s own diagnostic report for sector-level information rather than claiming that a particular file offset identifies the exact damaged area.

What a clean result does—and does not—mean

A completed long read diagnostic and a complete write-and-verify pass show that the drive handled those operations through that host, interface, temperature, power arrangement, and filesystem at that time. They do not guarantee a particular service life, immunity from later failure, or performance under a different enclosure or workload. Keep a backup strategy even for a drive that passes every test.

Preserve evidence for a return or warranty claim

Save the manufacturer diagnostic log, full-volume test output, screenshots of the model and serial number, operating-system capacity display, and purchase documentation. Write down the date, interface, cable or enclosure, and whether the test was read-only or destructive. A concise record lets a retailer or manufacturer distinguish a repeatable device failure from a one-time connection interruption.

If SMART reports errors, the long test identifies bad sectors, or write verification repeatedly fails after a controlled connection check, stop placing important data on the disk. Back up what can still be read, request replacement or refund, and provide the saved evidence. Do not attempt casual “repair,” sanitization, or repeated raw writes that could erase the information needed to establish the fault.

Practical decision guide

  • You only need a quick health screen: run the maker’s SMART and short self-test, then schedule the long diagnostic when the computer can remain powered for several hours.
  • You need confidence in all usable space: run the long diagnostic and a filesystem write-and-verify test on an empty target volume.
  • You suspect a counterfeit removable device: use a documented capacity-testing workflow, preserve the first failure, and avoid assuming a flash-focused tool is an HDD-specific authority.
  • The drive contains irreplaceable data: do not run a raw-device test. Back up first and use read-only diagnostics until the data is safe.
  • A test fails once: preserve the result, check the connection path, and perform a controlled retest. A repeated failure across a known-good setup is much stronger evidence than an unexplained single error.

The Bottom Line

For a new HDD, run the manufacturer’s long, data-safe read diagnostic and then perform a full-volume write-and-verify test if you need capacity proof. Confirm the device before every operation, never use raw testing on a disk with needed data, and treat repeatable errors as grounds for replacement rather than a problem to hide with formatting or repair attempts.
