Start your local development server, then run the same important user flows in Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. Playwright can automate those checks on your machine; add viewport and device emulation for responsive layouts. If you need a branded browser or a real remote device—or a hosted browser must reach a private localhost site—use a remote-testing service with a local tunnel.
Choose the kind of browser coverage you need
“Different browsers” can mean different browser engines, branded desktop browsers, or browsers running on actual mobile devices. They are not interchangeable. Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit provide useful engine coverage; Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge can also be configured as separate branded targets. Device emulation helps check layouts and configured device parameters, but it does not prove that the site works on a physical phone or tablet.
- Repeatable automated checks: use Playwright to perform the same actions and assertions in multiple configured browser projects.
- Responsive layout checks: use Playwright emulation for viewport sizes, touch settings, user agent, and other supported parameters.
- Interactive remote browser/device checks or private-site access from hosted browsers: use a service such as BrowserStack Local Testing, which documents a tunnel for access to localhost or private-network hosts.
Choose browsers and versions based on the browsers your audience uses and your own support commitments. There is no universal matrix that fits every site.
Run the same automated checks locally with Playwright
1. Start your development server
Start the site using the command for its framework and note the local URL, such as http://localhost:3000. The server must be listening before the test navigates to it. There is no universal start command because it depends on the project’s stack.

2. Install Playwright and its browser binaries
For a JavaScript project, install the test package and download the browsers with Playwright’s CLI:
npm init playwright@latestFollow the setup prompts for the project, then install or update the browser binaries for the installed Playwright version:
npx playwright installPlaywright versions are associated with browser binaries; keep the installed browser set aligned with the Playwright version you use. The Playwright browser guide documents the supported browser projects and installation options: Playwright browsers.

3. Configure browser projects
In playwright.config.ts, define the engines you want to cover. This example runs one test suite in Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit:

});These project names and device presets select Playwright browser configurations; a downloaded Chromium build is not the same thing as checking branded Google Chrome. For branded Chrome and Microsoft Edge, configure the Chromium project with the appropriate channel, for example:

4. Test behavior, not only whether the page opens
Playwright describes tests this way: “Playwright tests are simple: they perform actions and assert the state against expectations.” Make the assertions match what the site is supposed to do. For example, check a title or navigation item, submit a form and verify its feedback, or proceed through a checkout step in a safe test environment. Those are examples to adapt to your application, not requirements for every site.
A minimal test could look like this:

Each configured project runs the checks against its selected browser. When a test fails, determine whether the failure reflects a genuine browser-specific problem, a timing assumption, or a test setup issue. Fix the cause and rerun the same flow across projects; using the same actions and assertions makes differences easier to identify. A multi-project run does not establish that every browser version or production build behaves identically.

Check responsive layouts with emulation
Playwright can configure viewport and screen size, user agent, touch, and other environment properties. This is useful for finding layout breakage at representative mobile-sized dimensions or checking touch-oriented interaction assumptions. Its emulation documentation lists the available settings and device presets: Playwright emulation.
Use a project with a mobile device preset, or configure the parameters you want to check. Treat the result as emulation: it simulates configured device characteristics and is not a test on physical hardware. If physical-device behavior matters, arrange a remote real-device session.

A hosted browser cannot normally reach a private service running only on your computer without a connection path. BrowserStack documents Local Testing, which establishes an outbound encrypted tunnel so its cloud browsers and devices can reach localhost or private-network hosts. Start the local connection using BrowserStack’s current setup instructions, then open the local URL in the remote browser or device session. The exact tunnel setup depends on the service configuration, so follow its current documentation rather than assuming one command applies to every account or environment.
Use remote sessions when you need interactive inspection on a browser or physical device unavailable locally, or when you need a hosted browser to access a private development or staging site. A tunnel is an optional way to broaden coverage, not a prerequisite for local Playwright tests.
Common problems and fixes
- The browser cannot open the local URL: confirm the development server is running and the URL and port are correct. For a hosted browser, confirm its local tunnel is connected and configured to reach the host.
- A browser project is missing or fails to launch: install the browser binaries for the Playwright version in the project with
npx playwright install; check the Playwright browser guide for channel-specific setup. - A test passes in one project but fails in another: inspect the assertion and interaction for browser-specific behavior, and check whether the failure is caused by timing or setup rather than the site. Keep the action and expected state consistent when comparing projects.
- A mobile-sized test passes but a real phone behaves differently: emulation is not physical-device validation. Reproduce the issue on a remote or local real device if the distinction matters.
- Remote testing cannot reach a private site: verify the local connection or tunnel is active and that the requested hostname is included in its supported access path. Follow the provider’s current troubleshooting instructions.

Can I test localhost in a remote browser?
Yes. A hosted browser can reach a private local site through a supported local tunnel, such as BrowserStack Local Testing.
Does Playwright mobile emulation test a real phone?
No. It simulates configured device parameters; physical-device testing requires an actual device or a remote real-device session.
