The key-shaped icon in Android’s status bar means a VPN connection is active. It does not identify the VPN app. To find the app or service behind it, open Settings, search for VPN, and inspect the active connection in the VPN settings screen. If that entry belongs to an app, Android can usually open the app that configured it.
Find the active VPN from Android Settings
Android’s menu labels vary by phone maker, Android release, and device-management policy. The Settings search is therefore the most reliable starting point.

- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Tap the search field or magnifying-glass icon and enter VPN.
- Open the result named VPN, VPN settings, or a similarly labelled network option.
- If your phone uses the standard Google layout, go to Network & internet > VPN.
- Review every VPN profile shown. Look for the profile marked connected, active, or currently in use.
- Tap the relevant profile to view its controls. Depending on the phone and profile type, you may see options to connect, disconnect, edit, or forget it.
If searching does not reveal a VPN option, Google advises contacting the device manufacturer because the location and wording can differ. The absence of the exact Network & internet path does not mean the key icon is unrelated to a VPN.
How to read the VPN list
The VPN screen is the place to identify the connection, not the status-bar icon. A profile name may match an installed VPN app, a built-in service, a work profile, or a manually configured server. Check the name and status together rather than assuming that the first entry is responsible.

Look for the connected state
Only one profile, or one service within the list, may show Connected, Active, or an on-state switch. Some phones show a small status line instead. Open that entry before changing anything.
Use the entry’s app hand-off
When a VPN was configured through an app, selecting its profile may open that app or provide a button that does so. The app’s own screen should show whether it is connected and normally provides its disconnect control. If Android opens an app, that is the strongest indication of which installed app is producing the key icon.
Do not confuse saved profiles with active connections
A VPN can remain listed after its app has been removed, after a subscription has expired, or after it was used once and disconnected. A saved profile is not proof that it is currently responsible for the icon. Confirm the active state first.

These categories can look similar in the list. The management location and whether you can edit or forget the profile are useful clues.

If a VPN app appears to be responsible
After Android identifies an app-based profile, open the matching app from the VPN entry or from the app drawer. Check its connection screen before uninstalling or changing settings.
- Verify that the app reports an active connection and that its in-app status agrees with Android’s VPN screen.
- Use the app’s Disconnect or equivalent control if you only want to remove the key icon temporarily.
- Return to Settings > VPN and confirm that the profile now shows disconnected.
- If you no longer need the profile, use Forget in Android’s VPN settings when that control is offered. Removing a saved profile does not necessarily uninstall the app.
- If the app is unfamiliar, inspect its Android app-info page and permissions before deciding whether to keep it. Do not assume that an unknown profile is malicious; it may have been installed by an employer, school, security product, or another user of the phone.
Disconnecting a VPN can change how traffic reaches the internet. It may also stop access to a company network or an app that requires the tunnel. Record any work or school instructions before forgetting a profile.
Check VPN by Google on Pixel phones using Google Fi
Google Fi users on Pixel devices may see VPN by Google rather than a third-party app. Google Fi’s instructions state that the key icon means the VPN is connected. The service can be managed in Settings > Network & internet > VPN > VPN by Google or from the Google Fi app.

Therefore, if you connect an app-based VPN and the key icon remains, check which service is shown as active in the VPN list instead of assuming both tunnels are running.

Pixel 7 and later duplicate-profile case
On Pixel 7 and later running Android 15 QPR 2 or a higher release, Google Fi says users might see two profiles named VPN by Google. In that narrow version-specific situation, the profile listed under Others can be forgotten. The built-in profile cannot be manually removed. This duplicate-profile behavior is not a general explanation for every Android key icon; first confirm the phone model, Android release, and active profile.
When the phone belongs to work or school
An administrator can configure a VPN, restrict VPN settings, or apply a VPN only to the work profile. The profile may have a company-specific name, appear under work settings, or lack the disconnect and forget controls available for a personal profile.
If the entry is unfamiliar and the device is managed, contact the organization’s administrator or help desk. Do not factory-reset the phone or remove management software to investigate: those actions can erase data, violate policy, or leave the device unable to access required services. The administrator may be the only person allowed to change or remove the connection.

What to do when the menu path is different
Android manufacturers reorganize Settings. The exact labels may differ by model and Android version, and management policies can hide options. Use this order:

- Search Settings for VPN.
- Try the network section, often labelled Network & internet, Connections, or Wireless & networks.
- Open the result that lists VPN profiles rather than a browser search result or help article.
- Check both personal and work-profile sections if the phone has a work profile.
- If no result appears, consult the phone maker’s support instructions or administrator.
Google’s consumer guidance notes that some steps apply only to Android 14 and later. Treat the labels as examples, not a universal path for every device.

The VPN shows disconnected but the key remains
Wait briefly, then lock and unlock the phone. Reopen the VPN screen and check whether another profile is active. If an app has a persistent connection setting, open that app and disconnect there. A restart can clear a stale status indicator, but it does not remove a configured VPN.
Several profiles look active
Read the status text for each profile and open them one at a time. On Google Fi Pixels, check specifically for the two-profile situation described above. On managed phones, a work-profile VPN may be active even when the personal profile appears idle.

Tap the profile to see whether Android identifies an associated app. Check installed apps for a matching name and ask other authorized users of the phone whether they configured it. If the phone is managed, ask the administrator before deleting anything.
There is no disconnect or forget option
That restriction commonly indicates an administrator-managed profile or a built-in service. Check for a work-profile badge and contact the organization or service provider that controls the phone. A missing control is not a reason to bypass device management.
The key returns after every restart
The VPN app or management policy may be configured for automatic connection. Open the identified app and look for an always-on or auto-connect setting. If Android labels the profile as always-on or prevents changes, only the administrator may be able to alter it.
Distinguish identification from replacement
The key icon answers one question: a VPN tunnel is currently connected. It does not tell you which commercial provider is best, whether the connection is fast, or whether you should install another service. Installing a new VPN before identifying the existing profile can create confusion and may automatically turn off a built-in service such as VPN by Google.

For this troubleshooting task, use the existing VPN list and associated app. Consider a replacement only after you know which profile is active, why it is present, and whether a work or school policy depends on it.
Privacy and connectivity checks after identification
Once you know the source, confirm what should happen when it is disconnected. A personal VPN may be protecting traffic on public Wi-Fi; a work VPN may provide access to internal systems; Google Fi’s VPN by Google is a built-in option for eligible Pixel and Fi configurations. Disconnecting any of them can change the network route and access available to apps.
