- Sign in to macOS and click the Apple menu in the upper-left corner.
- Select About This Mac.
- Record the model name and screen size shown in the window, along with the chip, memory and macOS version if they are displayed.
- Use Apple’s MacBook Air identification guide or MacBook Pro identification guide if you need to distinguish a particular generation. Those pages provide model identifiers and part numbers for specific sizes and years.
The model name alone may not describe the complete computer. Two machines sold under the same family name can have different memory, storage or GPU configurations, so capture the full specification before buying accessories, selling the Mac or comparing it with a newer model.

If the Mac will not start
Read the model identifier or part number printed on the underside, packaging or original purchase record, then match it with Apple’s identification pages. A serial number can also help Apple Support identify the machine, but the exact identifier and part number are the most useful when several generations look alike.
Apple’s current MacBook lineup at a glance
Apple’s Mac comparison page lists these families and chip choices:
| Family | Screen sizes listed | Chip options listed |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air | 13-inch and 15-inch | M5 |
| MacBook Pro | 14-inch | M5, M5 Pro and M5 Max |
This table is a starting point rather than a complete buying recommendation. The right choice depends on how often you carry the computer, how large your projects are, whether your workload runs for long periods, and which ports or displays you need.

Choose the family before choosing the chip
When the MacBook Air is the sensible default
Start with the Air if your priorities are low carrying burden, a compact computer and enough performance for ordinary work. Typical examples include web and office applications, communication, schoolwork, coding projects that are not continuously processing large data sets, and light creative work. Select the 13-inch model when desk and bag space matter most; consider the 15-inch model when you want more on-screen room while staying in the Air family.
The Air is also the clearer value when you cannot name a task that benefits from a higher-tier Pro configuration. A higher chip label does not automatically make everyday applications feel proportionally faster, and Apple does not publish a single threshold at which every buyer should move to Pro or Max.
When to examine the MacBook Pro range
Compare a Pro when your applications regularly handle heavier graphics, larger projects or sustained processing. A Pro configuration may also be appropriate when you need the ports, display options or memory capacities offered by that family. The decision should be tied to an application or project requirement rather than to the word “professional” in the product name.
Apple’s comparison and technical-specification pages are the authoritative places to check the exact display, battery, compute and port details for the configuration sold in your region. Those details can differ by size and chip selection.

What the M5, M5 Pro and M5 Max names actually tell you
M5 in the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro
M5 is the baseline chip name in Apple’s current Air range and is also offered in the 14-inch MacBook Pro. Do not assume that an M5 in one family is the same complete computer as an M5 in another: the enclosure, cooling design, display, ports, memory options and other system components are part of the decision.
M5 Pro
The 14-inch MacBook Pro technical specifications list multiple M5 Pro CPU and GPU configurations and several unified-memory options. That gives buyers more headroom for demanding projects than the fixed choices in the entry Air configuration, but the useful amount depends on your software and files.
M5 Max
M5 Max is the higher tier in the 14-inch Pro specifications. Apple lists multiple CPU and GPU configurations and unified-memory choices for it. The same specifications report higher memory bandwidth for the Pro-tier chips than for the M5 Air. Memory bandwidth is a hardware capability, not a promise that every application will run at a particular percentage faster.

No universal “best chip” exists for a typical buyer. A workload that keeps all CPU or GPU resources busy for long periods can justify investigating Pro or Max; a workload that mostly waits for network responses or performs short tasks often will not use those extra resources.
The exact 13-inch MacBook Air M5 configuration
Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Air (M5) technical specifications establish these selectable configurations:
| Component | Apple-listed configuration | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | 10-core CPU | All listed 13-inch M5 Air configurations use this CPU count. |
| GPU | 8-core GPU, with a 10-core GPU configuration option | Choose the higher GPU option only if your applications can use additional graphics resources. |
| Unified memory | 16GB, configurable to 24GB or 32GB | More memory helps when you keep many applications, large documents or sizable creative projects open together. |
| Storage | 512GB SSD, configurable to higher capacities | Estimate the space needed for applications, local media, project files and free working room before ordering. |
These figures apply to the named 13-inch M5 Air specification and should not be generalized to every MacBook Air generation or every sales region. Verify the configuration selector and availability where you intend to buy.
Match unified memory to the way you work
Unified memory is shared by the CPU and GPU, so the practical question is how much data your applications need at the same time. Use these checks:
- 16GB: a reasonable starting point when your work consists mostly of browsers, office applications, communication and moderate projects.
- 24GB or 32GB on the 13-inch M5 Air: worth examining when you routinely keep many demanding applications open, work with larger files or use memory-intensive creative and development tools.
- Pro memory options: compare them when your project sizes exceed what the Air configurations can hold comfortably or when your professional software documents a specific memory requirement.
Do not buy memory solely for a future-proofing slogan. List the applications you use, check their published requirements, and observe whether your current Mac relies heavily on memory swapping. A larger memory option cannot compensate for an application that is limited by a different component, and a higher chip tier cannot create storage space.

The 13-inch M5 Air starts at a 512GB SSD configuration and can be ordered with higher capacities. Count the space occupied by your operating system, applications, photos, video, virtual machines, source repositories and local backups, then leave working room for projects and updates.
Internal storage is not the same as memory. More storage lets you keep more data locally; more unified memory lets active applications and projects stay in fast working space. If you routinely move large media or development environments between locations, include the speed and compatibility of any external storage in your decision.
Screen size, ports and displays can outweigh chip differences
Screen size and portability
The 13-inch Air takes less desk and bag space, while the 15-inch Air provides a larger built-in workspace. The 14-inch Pro sits in the Pro family and should be compared on its complete display and port specification, not merely its diagonal measurement. Apple’s comparison page supplies display fields for the listed models.
Ports and external displays
Write down every connector and display requirement before selecting a model: power, high-speed storage, cameras or audio interfaces, wired networking through an adapter, and the number and resolution of external displays. Then check the exact Apple specification page for the chosen chip and size. Port and display support can vary by family and configuration, so a dock you already own is not proof that every MacBook will support it in the same way.

Apple publishes battery estimates on its comparison and technical-specification pages. They are manufacturer figures measured under stated test conditions, not guaranteed runtime. Treat the estimate as a way to compare Apple’s own models under its method, not as a promise for your personal day.

Compare the workload, not the job title
“Student,” “designer” or “developer” is not precise enough to select a chip. Two people with the same title may have entirely different files and processing times. Write down the heaviest task you perform, how long it runs, and whether you do it once a week or throughout the day.
- Short, interactive tasks: Browsing, documents, email, video calls and ordinary coding usually point first to an Air configuration, provided its memory, storage and ports fit.
- Large but occasional projects: A photographer, editor or developer may need more memory or storage even when the task is not continuous. Upgrade the component that is actually constrained rather than automatically selecting Max.
- Sustained processing: Repeated exports, long software builds, high-resolution media work, 3D scenes or data processing are reasons to compare Pro configurations and their CPU, GPU, memory and bandwidth choices.
- GPU-heavy work: Check whether the application uses the GPU and whether its own documentation specifies a memory or graphics requirement. A larger GPU configuration matters only when software can use it.
If possible, time a representative export, build or render on your current Mac. That observation is more useful than a generic benchmark headline because it reflects your files, settings and plug-ins. It still does not guarantee the same result on every new configuration, but it gives you a concrete baseline for deciding whether the additional cost is justified.
Understand the cost of the configuration
The purchase price is determined by the complete build, not just the family label. Memory, SSD capacity and GPU choices can change the price, and a 15-inch Air or 14-inch Pro may cost more because of its display and system configuration as well as its chip. Apple’s comparison and specification pages provide the configuration fields; prices, promotions, inventory and build-to-order choices vary by country and date.
Make a short list of the upgrades you would otherwise add later. Internal memory and storage are not equivalent to plugging in an accessory, so choosing the lower configuration and planning to “upgrade later” may not solve the problem. Conversely, paying for the highest tier is wasteful if your applications never use its extra resources. Compare the price difference with a documented requirement, such as a project size, a required display setup or a memory limit in your software.
A repeatable buying process
- Identify the work: list the applications, file types and longest-running tasks you perform. Mark anything involving large timelines, 3D scenes, high-resolution media, software builds or data processing.
- Set the portability target: choose between the 13-inch Air, 15-inch Air and 14-inch Pro based on the screen and carrying space you need.
- Check hard requirements: confirm ports, external-display support, display characteristics, operating-system compatibility and any vendor requirement for unified memory.
- Pick the family: select Air when its available configurations meet the workload and portability target; examine Pro when sustained heavy work, larger projects or a required configuration makes the Air unsuitable.
- Select the chip tier: begin with M5, then move to M5 Pro or M5 Max only when a documented application or project need uses the additional CPU, GPU, memory or bandwidth capability.
- Size memory: choose enough unified memory for your largest normal working set, not just the number of browser tabs you open occasionally.
- Size storage: calculate current usage plus planned local files and reasonable free space. Select the SSD capacity before checkout because later expansion is not the same as replacing internal storage.
- Verify the exact listing: open Apple’s current comparison and technical-specification pages, select the same screen size, chip, memory and storage, and confirm regional availability and current pricing.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying by chip name alone
“M5” does not identify the complete configuration. Record the family, screen size, CPU/GPU choice, unified memory and SSD capacity together.
Assuming Max is required for all creative work
Creative applications vary widely. Some projects are limited by memory or storage, while others benefit from sustained GPU processing. Check the software maker’s requirements and the size of your own projects before paying for Max.
Using a benchmark headline as a guarantee
A benchmark measures a defined task under defined conditions. It cannot establish a universal speedup for every application, workflow or configuration. Use your actual export, build, simulation or rendering task as the decision reference whenever possible.
Ignoring regional configuration differences
Apple’s pages are organized by country or region, and prices, stock and selectable configurations can change. The 13-inch M5 Air specifications cited here are from Apple’s Australia support page; the Pro specifications are from Apple’s Ireland support page. Check the page serving your market before ordering.
Confusing identification with upgrade advice
About This Mac tells you what you own; it does not by itself tell you what to buy next. After recording the model, compare the workload and requirements for the replacement using the process above.
Forgetting the accessories you already use
List your dock, monitor, storage drives, camera, audio interface and network adapter. Confirm that the new MacBook supports the required connection and display arrangement. A familiar accessory may need a different cable, adapter or port, and display support can vary by model and chip.

A practical rule for the final choice
For many buyers, the decision is straightforward: identify the exact MacBook first; choose the 13-inch or 15-inch Air if its M5 configuration satisfies the applications, memory, storage, screen and port requirements; and investigate the 14-inch Pro with M5 Pro or M5 Max when sustained heavy workloads, larger projects or a specific Pro-only requirement justify it. Select the least expensive configuration that meets those documented needs, and verify the complete specification—not just the chip name—before paying.
