To identify the model behind a Gemini response, use the response’s own details rather than guessing from its writing. On a computer, open the response’s More menu, choose Show thinking steps, and scroll to the bottom. In the Gemini Android app, choose See response details from the same menu. For API calls, read the model identifier in the request or interaction record.
Where Gemini shows the model that produced a response
Gemini can route a prompt automatically, and the model you expected to receive is not necessarily the model that handled a particular response. The reliable method is to inspect that response’s details in Gemini Apps, or to read the model field in your API request. Google documents separate labels for desktop and Android interfaces, while API users work with model identifiers rather than app menu names.

These checks tell you which model Google associated with an individual answer. They are more dependable than judging by tone, speed, formatting, or apparent reasoning quality. Google’s documentation supports checking the response UI or the request identifier, not identifying a model from its prose.

The distinction matters whenever you are comparing answers, filing a bug report, documenting an evaluation, or trying to reproduce an earlier result. A conversation can contain multiple generated responses, and automatic routing can make the model vary from one prompt to the next. Record the model attached to the specific answer you are discussing.

Check a Gemini response on a computer
- Go to Gemini and open the conversation containing the answer.
- Find the response you want to examine. At the bottom of that response, click More.
- Select Show thinking steps.
- Scroll to the bottom of the thinking steps. Google displays the model used for that response there.
The menu is attached to the specific response, so check the answer in question rather than relying on a model label shown elsewhere in the conversation. If a chat contains several generated answers, each response can have its own details.
Google’s Gemini Apps Help describes the computer workflow as opening More, selecting Show thinking steps, and reading the model at the bottom. The wording and placement can change as the web interface is updated, so the linked support page is the best reference if your screen differs.
Do not stop after opening the thinking view. The model label is at the bottom, so scroll through the panel until you reach it. The label is the useful record for that response; the thinking text itself is not a reliable way to identify a model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck a response in the Gemini Android app
- Open the Gemini app on your Android phone or tablet.
- Select the conversation that contains the response.
- Tap More beneath the response.
- Tap See response details.
- Read the model shown in the response details.
Google documents the same response-details approach for the Gemini web app when it is used on Android. In both cases, the important distinction is the label: Android uses See response details, while the computer interface uses Show thinking steps.
If you are looking at a long chat, first locate the exact answer whose model you need. Tap the menu under that answer, not a general account or conversation menu. The details belong to the selected response.
Computer, Android and API paths at a glance
| Use case | Where to check | Documented label or field | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini on a computer | More beneath the response, then the thinking view | Show thinking steps; the model appears at the bottom | The model associated with that response |
| Gemini Android app | More beneath the response, then response details | See response details | The model Google reports for that response |
| Gemini web app on Android | More beneath the response, then response details | See response details | The model Google reports for that response |
| Gemini API | The request or interaction record | model and its identifier |
The model requested for generating the interaction |
The app and API expose different kinds of information. Apps present a consumer-facing detail view for a finished answer. An API integration should preserve the model name or identifier sent with the request and associate it with the returned interaction.
Use the row that matches the product you actually used. An API resource name is not necessarily the same text a consumer app displays, and an Android menu label does not describe how an API call is logged.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

API users generally do not inspect a chat menu. Instead, check the model identifier in the request or interaction record. Google’s Interactions API documentation defines the model field as the name of the model used to generate the interaction. The field is required when an agent is not provided.

In practical terms, retain the exact value your application sends. Store it alongside the interaction ID, timestamp and your own request metadata if you need reproducible logs. Do not replace the identifier with a friendly label in your records; the exact string is what lets you distinguish a stable model, a preview release or an alias.
If your application wraps the API, inspect the final outbound request rather than an internal setting that may be overridden later. If an agent supplies the model, use the interaction record and the API response metadata available to your implementation. The key is to preserve the identifier associated with the generated interaction, not merely the model family you intended to use.
Google’s Models REST reference describes model-resource fields that distinguish a model’s name, base ID, version and display name. Those fields serve different purposes:
- Model name: the resource identifier used to refer to the model.
- Base ID: the underlying model family or base identifier.
- Version: the particular release represented by the resource.
- Display name: a human-readable label, which is not necessarily the complete identifier used by an API request.
When troubleshooting or auditing an API response, record the identifier exactly as returned or configured, not just the display name. Google’s Gemini API model catalog explains the available model resources and their release status.
A useful API log entry therefore includes the exact model value, the interaction identifier, the time of the call, and enough request context to tell one test from another. Keeping those fields together prevents a later comparison from confusing a model change with a prompt or application change.
Why the model may not be the one you expected
Gemini Apps can use automatic model selection. Google says that when automatic selection is enabled, prompts are routed to the most efficient model and thinking level for the request, with the goal of delivering the best possible response and preserving usage. In other words, the model selected for an individual prompt can depend on Google’s routing decision rather than only on what you used in a previous chat.
That is why a selected model, an account’s available models and the model that answered one response are separate facts. The response details are the authoritative place to check the last of these.
Google also says that users with a Google AI plan can manually switch models in Chat Mode and Task Mode. Higher-tier choices may require an eligible plan. This plan-related feature is separate from viewing response details: the documented instructions do not say that a paid plan is required merely to see which model generated an answer.

Automatic selection is not an error by itself. It is a routing behavior. If you need a particular model for a controlled comparison, use the manual-selection feature where your account and mode support it, then still inspect the completed response or preserve the API identifier. A setting tells you what you selected; the response detail tells you what Google reports as used.
Selected model versus model actually used
These terms are easy to conflate:
- Selected model: a model you chose manually, or a setting that was active before you sent the prompt.
- Automatically routed model: the model Gemini selected for that prompt when automatic selection was enabled.
- Model used: the model Google reports for the completed response in the details view.
If you need to document a particular answer, use the final category. A model picker can tell you what you requested or what your account allows, but it is not a substitute for checking the response itself when automatic routing is involved.
This distinction also matters when repeating a prompt later. The same wording can be handled under a different routing decision, release, or account setting. Save the model detail with the answer instead of assuming that a later run used the same one.

What not to use as evidence
A response’s style is not a dependable model signature. Concise wording, a fast reply, a long chain of reasoning, coding quality or a particular formatting habit can result from the prompt, system behavior, tools, context length and other factors. The official instructions provide a direct inspection path, so there is no need to infer the model from those characteristics.
Likewise, do not assume that every response in a conversation used the same model. Inspect the relevant response if you are comparing answers, recording a result or investigating a change in behavior.
Third-party screenshots, old tutorials and model-picker labels can also become stale as Google changes names and availability. Treat them as orientation only; use the current response detail or current API identifier for the answer you are documenting.
Troubleshoot missing model details
The computer menu does not show “Show thinking steps”
- Confirm that you opened More beneath the response itself, not a conversation-level menu.
- Refresh Gemini and reopen the conversation.
- Check the current wording in Google’s Gemini Apps Help, because interface labels can change.
- If the option remains unavailable, the response or account may not expose that view in the current interface. Do not infer the model from the prose.
The Android menu does not show “See response details”
- Open the specific conversation and tap More directly under the answer.
- Make sure you are using the current Gemini app or Android web experience and try reopening the chat.
- Compare the menu with Google’s current support instructions. The documented Android label is See response details.
- If details are still absent, treat the model as unverified rather than guessing from response quality.
The API log contains a friendly name but no exact identifier
- Inspect the original request payload and capture its
modelvalue. - Use the model resource information in Google’s REST reference to distinguish the model name, base ID and version.
- Keep aliases and versioned identifiers exactly as configured, because they can resolve differently over time.
The model differs between two runs
First compare the response-level details or exact API identifiers, then check whether automatic selection, a different mode, account eligibility, prompt context, or an alias was involved. Do not conclude that the interface is wrong solely because two answers sound different. The documented identification methods are the appropriate evidence.

Google’s API catalog distinguishes stable and preview releases. It also explains that aliases such as “latest” can change behind the alias. A request that uses an alias therefore does not guarantee the same underlying version forever.

For repeatable experiments, save the exact model identifier, the date and the relevant request settings. For a consumer Gemini answer, save the response details shown by the app. If you publish instructions that include a model name, recheck Google’s live catalog before you publish because model availability and labels are not permanent.
The model catalog is the appropriate place to verify current API names and release status: Google AI for Developers’ Models documentation. The REST reference provides the resource-level fields when you need to inspect a specific model: Models API reference.
Stable and preview labels describe release status, not a promise that two identifiers will remain interchangeable. When a result matters, retain the complete identifier and note whether it was an alias or a versioned resource. That record is more useful than a shortened family name.
How to record the result for a bug report or comparison
- Save the original prompt and the response timestamp.
- In Gemini on a computer, capture the model shown at the bottom of Show thinking steps; on Android, record the model in See response details.
- Note whether automatic model selection was enabled or whether you manually selected a model.
- For API calls, preserve the exact
modelvalue from the request and the interaction identifier. - Record the app or API context separately. A consumer-facing label and an API resource identifier are not interchangeable.
- If the model is represented by an alias, record that alias and the date rather than silently converting it to a presumed version.
This record lets another person distinguish a change in model routing from a change in prompt, account settings or application code.
For a side-by-side test, keep the prompts identical, label each response with its own model detail, and avoid combining several answers under one conversation-level label. If you share screenshots, include the menu path or the relevant API log line so the identification can be checked.
Requirements and limits of the check
You need access to the Gemini conversation to inspect its response menu. The computer and Android workflows depend on the interface exposing the documented option. The API workflow depends on retaining the request or interaction record. None of these methods requires you to estimate the model from output quality.
Google’s support material reviewed here documents computer and Android paths. It does not establish exact iPhone or iPad menu steps. Do not present the Android labels as guaranteed iOS instructions; check Google’s current iOS help for that platform.
Model availability, plan eligibility, usage limits and menu wording can change. A missing model label is a reason to verify the current support page or your API logs, not a reason to make a confident identification from the answer alone.
Best Value
iPhone and iPad availability
The documented material for this guide provides computer and Android directions. It does not establish exact iPhone or iPad menu steps. Google’s labels and placement may differ on iOS, so use the current Gemini support documentation for that platform instead of applying the Android instructions as if they were guaranteed to match.
Quick decision guide
- Using Gemini in a desktop browser? Open More under the response, choose Show thinking steps, and read the model at the bottom.
- Using the Gemini Android app or Android web app? Open More, choose See response details, and read the model there.
- Calling Gemini through an API? Check and retain the exact
modelidentifier in the request or interaction record. - Wondering whether the prose reveals the model? It does not provide reliable evidence; inspect the response details or request identifier.
- Using automatic selection? Treat the model picker as a setting, not proof of which model handled a particular answer.
- Need a repeatable comparison? Save the prompt, timestamp, response-level model detail or API identifier, and whether an alias or automatic routing was involved.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I see what model Gemini used on a computer?
Open the conversation, click More beneath the response, choose Show thinking steps, and scroll to the bottom. Google shows the model used there.
How can I check the Gemini model on Android?
Open the chat in the Gemini app or Android web experience, tap More beneath the answer, and select See response details. The model appears in those details.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can I identify the model from Gemini’s writing style or speed?
No. Tone, response time, formatting and apparent reasoning are not reliable model identifiers. Use the response details or the API model identifier.
Does automatic model selection change which model answers?
It can. Google says automatic selection routes prompts to an efficient model and thinking level. Check the details for each response instead of assuming the model from a prior setting.
Do I need a Google AI plan to see the model used?
The documented response-detail steps do not say a paid plan is required to view the model. Google AI plans are relevant to manually switching models, and higher-tier choices may require an eligible plan.
Where is the model name in a Gemini API call?
Check the request or interaction record’s model field and retain its exact identifier. Google defines that field as the model used to generate the interaction when an agent is not provided.
Recommended Free Tools
What is the difference between a model name, base ID, version and display name?
The model name is the resource identifier, the base ID identifies the underlying family, the version identifies a release, and the display name is a human-readable label. Keep the complete identifier for auditing.
Can an API alias such as “latest” change?
Yes. Google’s model catalog explains that aliases can change behind the alias. Save the alias, date and request settings when repeatability matters.
Why can’t I find exact iPhone instructions here?
The documented material used for these steps covers computer and Android interfaces, not exact iPhone or iPad menus. Check Google’s current iOS support instructions rather than assuming the Android labels match.
The Bottom Line
Check the response itself: on a computer use More → Show thinking steps and read the model at the bottom; on Android use More → See response details. For API calls, preserve the exact model identifier. Do not infer a model from writing style, and remember that automatic routing and changing aliases can affect which model handles a prompt.
