How to Tell Whether Your Wi-Fi Signal Is Actually Good

A Wi-Fi signal is good when it remains reliable where you use your device and supports what you need to do there. The Wi-Fi icon or one speed test cannot tell the whole story: signal strength, connection reliability, and internet speed are related but distinct. Check them separately, at the location where problems occur.

Check the signal where you use the device

Stand in the room or spot where Wi-Fi is slow or unreliable and use a Wi-Fi analyzer app to inspect signal strength and nearby network or channel conditions. Check more than one location, including a spot closer to the router or access point, so you have a useful comparison.

There is no single signal-strength cutoff that applies to every device, band, home, and workload. Rather than treating one reading as a universal pass or fail, compare readings across locations and after changes. A stronger signal gives you a better chance of a reliable connection, but it does not guarantee fast internet.

Measure performance separately

Before changing the network, run several speed tests in different parts of the home and record the results. Microsoft recommends establishing this baseline before making Wi-Fi changes. Keep the device, location, and test conditions as consistent as practical when comparing results. Repeat the tests after each change, and note reliability as well as speed.

A speed test measures the performance you experience at that moment; it does not isolate Wi-Fi signal strength. If the signal reading is strong but performance remains poor, try another device and consider other causes, including internet access, background activity, channel congestion, interference, or computer and software issues.

Know what the Wi-Fi icon can—and cannot—tell you

A connected Wi-Fi icon means the device has a wireless connection; it does not prove that an app or website can reach the internet or that the connection is performing well. A website, app, firewall, or internet-service problem can exist alongside an apparently connected Wi-Fi link. Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide distinguishes Wi-Fi connection status from internet access and covers slow connections.

Look for distance, obstacles, and interference

Weak coverage often varies with distance and what lies between the device and access point. Walls, floors, metal objects, and device position can obstruct or weaken a signal. Try moving the device closer, or place the access point centrally and higher, with fewer obstacles in the way. The strongest signal is usually a few feet from the access point rather than immediately beside it.

Interference can also cause disconnects or poor performance, even when a device is relatively near the router. Apple identifies potential sources such as microwaves, power cables, fluorescent lights, wireless video cameras, and cordless phones. Nearby active devices sharing a band and crowded channels can also affect performance. Reduce the distance from the access point, move suspected sources where practical, and review channel conditions.

Choose a Wi-Fi band for the location and task

The best band depends on how far the device is from the router, obstacles, the work you are doing, and whether the device supports that band. Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 guidance describes these general tradeoffs:

TP-Link WiFi Extender with Ethernet Port, Dual Band 5GHz/2.4GHz, Up to 44% More Bandwidth Than Single Band, Covers Up to 1200 Sq.ft and 30 Devices, Signal Booster Amplifier Supports OneMesh(RE220)
  • Dual Band WiFi Extender: Up to 44% more bandwidth than single band N300 WiFi extenders. Boost Internet WiFi coverage up to 1200 square feet and connects up to 30 devices(2.4GHz: 300Mbps; 5GHz: 433Mbps)
Band Typical strengths Tradeoffs
2.4 GHz Usually reaches farther and passes through obstacles better. Generally slower and more prone to congestion.
5 GHz Generally supports faster throughput and has more non-overlapping channels. Typically has shorter range and passes through obstacles less effectively than 2.4 GHz.
6 GHz Can provide high performance with low congestion near the router. Has shorter range and requires compatible equipment.

A faster band is not automatically better at every point in a home: a 5 GHz or 6 GHz connection may perform worse at a distant or obstructed location than 2.4 GHz. Compare the bands at the place you actually use the device.

Make one change at a time and compare

  1. At the problem location, record the analyzer reading, speed-test results, and whether the connection drops or works reliably.
  2. Change one thing: move the client closer, reposition the access point, remove or avoid an obstruction, or address a suspected interference or channel issue.
  3. Repeat the analyzer check and speed tests under similar conditions, at the same location and with the same device.
  4. Compare both the readings and the real-world outcome. If signal strength improves but speed does not, investigate other causes rather than assuming the signal was the only problem.

When an extender may help

Consider a network extender only after identifying a specific weak-coverage area and when moving the access point or device is impractical. An extender can help extend coverage; it is not a signal-measuring tool and does not guarantee faster internet. Microsoft discusses extenders as a possible coverage aid in its home-layout guidance.
