Compare your router’s internet test, a wired computer test, and Wi-Fi tests near the router and in the problem location. The pattern helps identify whether to investigate the incoming service, a cable or port, a particular device, or Wi-Fi coverage. No single speed test proves the cause: router and client tests may use different methods and servers, so treat them as comparisons rather than identical measurements.
Start with comparable tests
Keep the conditions as consistent as practical: use the same internet service, a suitable speed-test server, and pause other heavy downloads or streams. Record the results and where each test was run. A speed test measures the path between the test endpoint and its server; it does not by itself identify which link along that path is limiting performance.

- Run the router’s internet speed test, if available. For example, Google says its Nest or Google Wifi test measures from the router or primary Wifi point. This helps assess the service reaching the home network without relying on the Wi-Fi connection to a client device. Google Nest and Google Wifi troubleshooting guidance.
- Test one computer over Ethernet. Connect it directly to a LAN port on the router with a known-good cable, rather than through a switch or mesh satellite. Google Fiber recommends wired testing for the best connection and specifies a direct connection for its 10 Gbps testing scenario. Google Fiber speed-test instructions.
- Compare Wi-Fi close to the router and where it is usually slow. If practical, run the tests on a second Wi-Fi device as well. Microsoft recommends trying another device when diagnosing a network problem. Microsoft Ethernet troubleshooting.
- Repeat after checking local activity and connections. Pause other high-bandwidth use, confirm cables and ports are appropriate for the service, and repeat the relevant comparison. These checks narrow the likely area; they do not establish fault on their own. Test servers, device hardware, plan terms, and methods can change results, and a router-side test measures a different segment from a Wi-Fi client test.
Use the results to find where to look

Check Ethernet cables, ports, and adapters
A wired test is only a useful baseline if the whole wired path can carry the intended rate. Check the cable marking and the capabilities of the router, modem, switch, computer port, and any adapter in between. Make sure the cable is in a router LAN port, not its Internet/WAN port, and try a different cable if available.

Google’s Nest and Google Wifi troubleshooting page describes 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet port capabilities and warns that a slower component can reduce a connection to 100 Mbps or 10 Mbps. For a multi-gig plan, every link between the client and router must support the target speed. Google Fiber’s 2 Gig guidance calls for Cat 6 or greater in its setup and notes that device capability, cables, adapters, ports, and USB ports can affect results. Google Fiber 2 Gig guidance. A cable swap or adapter is useful as a diagnostic only when the existing cable or endpoint may be the constraint. A faster cable cannot raise a router port’s rating, fix an ISP-side problem, or make a slower computer adapter support a higher rate.

Wi-Fi speed depends on more than the internet plan. Distance, walls and other physical barriers, the Wi-Fi band, interference, client-device capability, and the placement of a router or mesh point can all affect the wireless link. - If Wi-Fi improves close to the router, look first at coverage, barriers, interference, or mesh placement.
- If Wi-Fi remains slow close by but Ethernet performs well, compare another wireless device and check the router’s Wi-Fi settings and the clients’ supported bands and standards.
- If only one client is slow, focus on that device’s wireless hardware, software, drivers, or background network use.
When to contact your ISP
Your ISP controls the initial bandwidth and speed of the internet coming into your home, as Google notes in its support guidance. Google Nest and Google Wifi troubleshooting. If the router-side test and a properly connected wired-client test both remain below what you expect after checking local links and activity, check for an outage and contact the ISP. Give the provider the test times, results, connection method, and whether other devices or activities were using the network. This evidence helps separate a service problem from a Wi-Fi-only or single-device issue; it does not guarantee that every test will match a plan’s advertised rate.
