One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchCheck the router and every client device separately. The dependable proof is an official specification that names Wi‑Fi 7 or IEEE 802.11be. A 6 GHz label alone is insufficient because Wi‑Fi 6E also uses 6 GHz. On a Windows PC, netsh wlan show drivers can reveal whether the adapter reports 802.11be; for phones and tablets, use the exact model’s specifications or the manufacturer’s compatibility list. Finally, distinguish hardware capability from the Wi‑Fi standard actually negotiated by the current connection.
The three checks that establish Wi‑Fi 7 compatibility
- Identify the exact model. Record the complete router, phone, tablet, laptop or wireless-adapter model number, including a hardware revision when the manufacturer uses one.
- Confirm the standard. Look in the manufacturer’s specifications or manual for “Wi‑Fi 7” or “802.11be.” Wi‑Fi 7 is the consumer name for IEEE 802.11be. Wi‑Fi 6 and Wi‑Fi 6E use 802.11ax.
- Check both ends and the live link. A Wi‑Fi 7 router can serve an older client, but the older client does not gain Wi‑Fi 7 features. A compatible router and adapter still do not prove that the current connection is using every available feature.
Microsoft recommends checking the router documentation or the manufacturer’s website, while device vendors generally document support by exact model. See Microsoft’s Wi‑Fi guidance and Intel’s wireless-standard explanation.

What “Wi‑Fi 7” means in a specification
802.11be is the decisive identifier
Wi‑Fi generations are marketing names mapped to IEEE radio standards. For this question, 802.11be is the useful identifier. Windows reports that radio type when a supported adapter exposes Wi‑Fi 7 capability. A product page that explicitly lists Wi‑Fi 7 or 802.11be gives you a much stronger answer than a product name containing “BE,” “7,” or another promotional label.

Why 6 GHz does not prove Wi‑Fi 7
Wi‑Fi 6E added 6 GHz operation to the 802.11ax generation. Wi‑Fi 7 can also use 6 GHz, so a 6 GHz specification proves that a device is designed for that band, not that it implements 802.11be. Intel and TP-Link both distinguish the 6 GHz band from the Wi‑Fi generation that uses it. Look for the standard name in addition to the band list.

Capability and connection are different questions
There are three separate questions:
- Does the client’s hardware support 802.11be?
- Does the access point support 802.11be and the features you want?
- Has the current connection negotiated Wi‑Fi 7, possibly including multi-link operation (MLO)?
Answering the first question from a specification does not answer the third. Firmware, enabled settings, regional rules and the capabilities of the other endpoint can change what is active.
How to check a router
1. Read the label and record the complete model
Find the model on the underside label, the web-management page or the manufacturer’s mobile application. Include suffixes and hardware revisions; two revisions sold under a similar name can have different radios or firmware requirements.
2. Use the official specification or manual
- Open the manufacturer’s support or product page for that exact model.
- Search the page or PDF for Wi‑Fi 7 and 802.11be.
- Check the listed bands separately: 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and, where permitted, 6 GHz.
- Look for feature notes about MLO, channel width and modulation. These determine what a particular model can actually use; a generation label alone does not provide those details.
- Check the firmware notes and the hardware revision against your installed version.
Do not conclude that a router is Wi‑Fi 7 merely because its product name contains “BE,” because it advertises 6 GHz, or because a retailer groups it with Wi‑Fi 7 products. The official specification must identify 802.11be.

| Specification item | What confirms | What it does not confirm |
|---|---|---|
| “Wi‑Fi 7” or “802.11be” | The router’s stated generation | That every client supports the same generation |
| 6 GHz band | 6 GHz radio capability, subject to regional rules | Wi‑Fi 7; Wi‑Fi 6E can also use 6 GHz |
| MLO | Support for a Wi‑Fi 7 multi-link feature on the documented model | That MLO is enabled, available in your region or active in the current link |
| Firmware requirement | The software version needed for a documented feature | That an older installed version exposes it |
How to check a Windows 11 PC
Confirm the Windows requirement
Microsoft documents Wi‑Fi 7 support beginning with Windows 11, version 24H2. Updating Windows does not add an 802.11be radio to an older computer; the wireless adapter, driver and operating system all have to support the standard.
Use the built-in driver report
- Open Command Prompt or Terminal.
- Run
netsh wlan show drivers. - Find Radio types supported.
- Look for
802.11be. Its presence means the adapter reports Wi‑Fi 7 support. - Review the authentication and cipher-support lines as well. Microsoft advises checking for WPA3 support when assessing a modern Wi‑Fi connection.
If 802.11be is absent, verify that you queried the intended adapter, install the computer maker’s current wireless driver and check the adapter’s exact model specification. A driver report is an adapter-capability check, not proof that your router supports Wi‑Fi 7 or that the current association is using it.
What the Windows result means
- 802.11be appears: the installed adapter reports Wi‑Fi 7 capability. The router, driver version, Windows release and regional settings still affect operation.
- Only 802.11ax appears: the adapter is reporting Wi‑Fi 6/6E capability, not Wi‑Fi 7. Confirm the model specification before considering an adapter upgrade.
- The command fails or shows no wireless adapter: check Device Manager, enable the adapter and reinstall the manufacturer’s driver before interpreting the radio list.
How to check an Android phone or tablet
For ordinary users: verify the exact model
Android does not provide one universal settings screen that exposes Wi‑Fi 7 capability on every manufacturer’s device. Use the complete model designation from Settings → About phone (or the equivalent tablet page), then consult the manufacturer’s official specifications. Search for Wi‑Fi 7 or 802.11be, not just 6 GHz.
What Android’s platform APIs can distinguish
The Android platform documents three different checks. An app can call WifiManager#isWifiStandardSupported with ScanResults.WIFI_STANDARD_11BE to ask whether the device supports Wi‑Fi 7. Other APIs can identify whether a scanned access point advertises Wi‑Fi 7 and whether the current station connection is operating in Wi‑Fi 7 mode. These are developer APIs; their availability and presentation depend on the Android release and device maker.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Consequently, a phone’s product page is the practical first check. If an app reports that the handset supports 802.11be, you still need a Wi‑Fi 7 access point and a compatible, enabled configuration to obtain a Wi‑Fi 7 connection.
How to check Apple devices
Apple maintains a current list titled Wi‑Fi 7 availability on Apple devices. Match your exact device family and chip or model, rather than relying on a broad product name such as “iPhone” or “iPad.” Apple distinguishes devices that can join a Wi‑Fi 7 network from devices that support all Wi‑Fi 7 features. The published list is dated August 25, 2026 and can change as new models are released.

Apple also notes that 6 GHz operation depends on regulatory approval. Where that approval is unavailable, the device uses only the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands for Wi‑Fi. Therefore, a device can be listed as Wi‑Fi 7-capable while 6 GHz remains unavailable in a particular country or deployment.
How to verify that Wi‑Fi 7 is actually being used
Android: check the reported connection mode
Android’s Wi‑Fi 7 documentation states that the connection mode is reported as Wi‑Fi 7 when both the client and the connected access point support it. A device-capability result by itself is not enough; check the access point shown in the scan and the mode of the current connection.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Windows: inspect the network properties
Windows network properties can expose more than one band when an MLO connection is in use. Seeing multiple bands is evidence of a multi-link connection, but it depends on a compatible router, adapter, firmware and enabled configuration. A single-band connection does not necessarily mean the hardware lacks Wi‑Fi 7; it may reflect the access point’s settings, signal conditions or regional limits.
Router interface and firmware
Use the router’s connected-device or wireless-status page to see the negotiated mode when the interface provides it. Install the firmware version documented for MLO or other Wi‑Fi 7 features, then confirm that those features are enabled. ASUS documents that model and firmware requirements affect its MLO implementation; the same principle applies generally, although menus differ by manufacturer.
Regional and firmware limits
6 GHz authorization varies by location
6 GHz is regulated regionally. NETGEAR explains that availability depends on whether the band is authorized in the user’s region and whether the manufacturer has enabled it. Apple likewise limits operation to approved bands. A missing 6 GHz network can therefore be a regulatory or software issue rather than evidence that the router or phone is not Wi‑Fi 7-capable.
Feature support can be narrower than generation support
Two products can both advertise Wi‑Fi 7 while differing in MLO implementation, channel-width options, modulation support, firmware maturity or regional band access. Read the detailed specification for the exact model and software version. Qualcomm notes that realized peak speed depends on channel width, modulation and MLO capabilities; theoretical platform ceilings are not promises of a particular internet speed.

Can older devices connect to a Wi‑Fi 7 router?
Yes. A Wi‑Fi 7 router remains backward-compatible with older clients on the bands and standards those clients support. TP-Link summarizes this by noting that older phones and laptops can still connect to traditional 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands. Such a client does not acquire Wi‑Fi 7 features, MLO or the router’s maximum theoretical capability simply because the access point is newer.
For a mixed household, check each important client individually. A Wi‑Fi 7 laptop can use Wi‑Fi 7 features with a suitable router while an older printer continues on 2.4 GHz; both can coexist on the same network.
Before replacing anything
Write down the exact router model, hardware revision, installed firmware and country of use. For each client, record the model, operating-system version, wireless-adapter model and driver version. This prevents a common error: checking a similarly named product or a generic family page instead of the hardware actually in front of you.

Keep the questions separate while troubleshooting. First establish whether the radio is 802.11be-capable. Next establish whether the router advertises the standard and desired bands. Only then investigate why a live connection is using one band, omitting 6 GHz or not forming an MLO link. A software update can expose a documented feature, but it cannot convert an 802.11ax-only radio into 802.11be hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUpgrading a desktop or older laptop
A compatible Wi‑Fi adapter may be an option when the computer lacks 802.11be, but there is no universal adapter choice that works in every system. Check the computer’s slot or interface, operating-system support, manufacturer drivers, antenna arrangement and regional radio rules before buying. A USB or internal adapter can report 802.11be only after its correct driver is installed, and the result still depends on a Wi‑Fi 7 router at the other end.
For a laptop with a soldered or vendor-restricted wireless module, an operating-system update alone is not an upgrade path. Confirm the exact replacement compatibility with the computer maker. For a desktop, also check whether the case, motherboard slot and supplied antennas accommodate the adapter. These hardware details determine whether a documented Wi‑Fi 7 specification is usable in practice.

“My router says 6 GHz, so is it Wi‑Fi 7?”
Not necessarily. Confirm that the exact model specification names 802.11be. 6 GHz identifies a band, and Wi‑Fi 6E also uses it.
“My computer cannot find 802.11be.”
Run netsh wlan show drivers again and verify the adapter name. Check Windows 11 24H2, install the latest driver supplied for that adapter and compare the exact adapter model with its official specification. If the hardware is 802.11ax-only, a software update cannot turn it into an 802.11be radio.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“My Wi‑Fi 7 phone cannot see the 6 GHz network.”
Check regional authorization, router firmware, whether the 6 GHz radio is enabled and whether the router is advertising a compatible network name and security configuration. Apple and NETGEAR both document that regional approval and maker enablement affect 6 GHz visibility.
“Both devices support Wi‑Fi 7, but MLO is not active.”
Confirm the router model and firmware requirements, update both endpoints, enable MLO in the router interface if available and inspect the current connection details. Android’s connection-mode check and Windows’ multi-band network properties address the active link rather than the device’s theoretical capability.
“The link is slower than the advertised maximum.”
Generation labels describe capabilities, not a guaranteed throughput. Channel width, modulation, MLO availability, distance, interference, the client’s own radio design and the internet service all affect results. Qualcomm specifically cautions that peak speed depends on those device capabilities and configuration choices.
A practical comparison checklist
When comparing a router, laptop, phone or adapter, record these items for each exact model:
Rank #4
- FASTER, FARTHER, MORE RELIABLE WIFI: A dedicated dual-band WiFi 7 router built to keep up with a growing home of streaming, video calls, gaming, and smart home devices.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- WIFI 7 THAT KEEPS UP WITH A BUSY HOME: Up to 5 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, 1.2x faster than WiFi 6. MU-MIMO and OFDMA let multiple devices send and receive data simultaneously. Real-world speeds depend on your devices and plan.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,250 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
| Question | Evidence to record |
|---|---|
| Is it Wi‑Fi 7? | Official specification naming Wi‑Fi 7 or 802.11be |
| Which bands can it use? | 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz listings, plus regional availability |
| Which Wi‑Fi 7 features are implemented? | MLO, documented channel-width choices and modulation capabilities |
| What software is required? | Windows release, driver, router firmware or device firmware identified by the manufacturer |
| What is active now? | Router status, Android connection mode or Windows network properties |
This checklist prevents the most common mistake: treating a band, a product nickname or a theoretical specification as proof of the negotiated connection.
Bottom line
For a reliable answer, match the exact router and client models to official specifications and look specifically for Wi‑Fi 7 or 802.11be. Treat 6 GHz as a separate band capability, verify Windows adapters with netsh wlan show drivers, use Apple’s dated compatibility list for Apple hardware and recognize Android’s distinction between device, access-point and current-connection checks. Regional rules, firmware and feature settings determine what you can actually use.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my router supports Wi‑Fi 7?
Find the exact model and hardware revision, then read the manufacturer’s official specification or manual. Look specifically for “Wi‑Fi 7” or “802.11be.” A 6 GHz listing, a product name containing “BE,” or a retailer category is not sufficient proof.
Does a 6 GHz router automatically support Wi‑Fi 7?
No. Wi‑Fi 6E and Wi‑Fi 7 can both use 6 GHz. Confirm that the specification identifies IEEE 802.11be.
Can my old phone connect to a Wi‑Fi 7 router?
Yes. Older phones and laptops can connect over the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands and standards they support. They remain older-generation clients and do not gain Wi‑Fi 7 features or MLO.
What does 802.11be mean on a Windows PC?
It is the IEEE radio-standard identifier for Wi‑Fi 7. In Windows 11, run netsh wlan show drivers and check “Radio types supported.” The result confirms adapter capability, not the router’s capability or the current negotiated mode.
Why can’t my device detect the 6 GHz wireless band?
Check whether 6 GHz is authorized in your region, whether the manufacturer has enabled it, whether the router’s 6 GHz radio is enabled and whether current firmware and security settings are compatible. A missing 6 GHz network does not by itself disprove Wi‑Fi 7 support.
Does Windows 11 support Wi‑Fi 7?
Microsoft documents Wi‑Fi 7 support beginning with Windows 11, version 24H2. The computer must also contain an 802.11be-capable adapter with an appropriate driver; updating Windows cannot add the radio hardware.
How can I tell whether MLO is active?
Check the router’s wireless-status page, Android’s reported connection mode or Windows network properties. Windows may show more than one band for an MLO connection. The router model, firmware, client support, regional rules and enabled settings all matter.
Are advertised Wi‑Fi 7 speeds guaranteed?
No. Realized peak speed depends on channel width, modulation, MLO capability, signal conditions, interference, the client’s radio design and the internet connection. A generation label describes capability rather than a guaranteed throughput.
The Bottom Line
Verify 802.11be on both endpoints, then check bands, firmware, regional rules and the live negotiated connection. 6 GHz alone is not Wi‑Fi 7.
