A Product Hunt launch is “good” when it advances the outcome you set for it—not only when it reaches the top of the leaderboard. Decide whether you want useful feedback, qualified visits, signups, trials, customers, or awareness; track that result by traffic source; and treat Product Hunt rank as a separate, relative measure. There is no reliable universal upvote target that guarantees success.
Decide what a good launch means before launch day
Write down one primary goal and the indicator that will show whether you made progress. Pick a measure that matches what the product is ready to achieve:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Feedback: relevant comments, product questions, and actionable suggestions from people who fit your intended audience.
- Qualified attention: visits from people likely to use the product, rather than a large but poorly matched audience.
- Activation: signups, trials, or another first meaningful action.
- Business results: leads, paying customers, or revenue, measured over a suitable period after launch as well as on launch day.
Choose a measurement window that fits the goal. A same-day view may help assess launch-day attention, while leads or paid customers may take longer to emerge.

Read the leaderboard without mistaking it for a business score
Product Hunt assigns points that determine homepage ranking. Its Help Center explains that points combine upvotes with meaningful engagement, such as comments or shares; the exact ranking algorithm is not disclosed. Time since submission and other factors also affect the moving leaderboard. Consequently, raw upvotes do not convert predictably into points or a fixed rank, and no upvote target can promise a particular result.
#1 Best Overall
Rank is also relative to other launches and changes over time. Use it to understand platform response alongside the substance of comments and feedback—not as a substitute for the outcome you chose.
Measure which promotion channels brought results
Tag links for Product Hunt, your email or newsletter, LinkedIn, and other channels, then compare visits and intended actions by source. This is practical attribution advice, not part of Product Hunt’s ranking formula. Avoid treating a single conversion percentage as a universal benchmark: the useful comparison is against your own goal, audience, and baseline.
Rank #2
Keep the measures distinct:
- Platform response: points, rank, comments, and qualitative feedback.
- Audience response: relevant visits and the actions those visitors take.
- Business outcome: leads, customers, revenue, or another product-specific result.
A modest rank alongside strong results from target users can still make the launch useful for the business. A prominent rank without meaningful action from the intended audience may deliver visibility without meeting the business goal. That distinction is an interpretation of the separate measures, not a Product Hunt ranking rule.

Where to promote the launch
Prioritize places where your target users already pay attention and where you have a genuine relationship. Product Hunt’s guidance recommends email, LinkedIn, launch-page embeds and badges, in-app notices, and communities where the team is already active. Get the team involved and be available to respond to comments on launch day.
Ask people for feedback, comments, or opinions—not for upvotes. Avoid posting indiscriminately: Product Hunt cautions against spamming communities such as Reddit or Indie Hackers where you have not been active.
| Option | Best suited to | Audience relationship | Cost and timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organic sharing | Feedback and targeted visits through email, LinkedIn, launch embeds, in-app notices, and relevant communities | Most useful where you or your team already have an audience or participate genuinely | No paid media budget required; share when the product and team are ready |
| Product Hunt advertising | Paid exposure before or after a launch | Uses Product Hunt’s ad inventory rather than relying solely on an existing community | Product Hunt’s help page lists self-serve web display budgets of $5,000–$10,000 and managed campaigns starting at $10,000; managed totals depend on scope. These listed terms were accessed October 7, 2026 and may change. Ads cannot run on launch day. |
Product Hunt advertising is not a way to buy leaderboard position. Product Hunt says launch-day ads are prohibited to keep advertising from affecting leaderboard awards. Its rules also prohibit paying a third party to hunt or send traffic, rewarding votes, and directly soliciting upvotes.

Choose launch timing around readiness, not a universal weekday rule
Product Hunt allows launches to be scheduled up to one month ahead. Its guidance does not establish one weekday as best for every product. Choose a date when the product is ready, your audience can be reached, and someone on the team can stay available to answer questions. Relevant events may also matter to your audience.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteProduct Hunt reports that about 53% of products that reached Product of the Day since 2021 included a video. That is a descriptive association, not evidence that video causes a top result; Product Hunt says video can help depending on the product but is not always necessary. It also reports that 70% of products achieving Product of the Day, Week, or Month included a first comment by the maker, but the cited passage does not state the cohort dates, and the figure does not establish that a first comment caused the result.

Interpret the result against your goal
After launch, compare your chosen indicator with the goal and baseline you set, then review the source data and feedback. Product Hunt itself notes that launching can be valuable without becoming number one. Its product pages can also support discovery after launch, so assess ongoing leads and customer activity on a timeframe that fits the product—not only the leaderboard on launch day.
