Check first for a swollen or distorted phone
If the screen or back cover is lifting, the casing looks distorted, or you can see a swollen battery, treat the phone as a repair and safety issue—not a routine battery test. Stop charging and using it where practical, and contact a qualified repair provider for safe handling advice. Do not press the case closed, puncture or bend the battery, open the phone, or try to remove a swollen battery yourself. HMD warns that battery damage can lead to dangerous chemical exposure or fire in its HMD Fusion battery replacement guide; its instructions are for HMD Fusion, not every Nokia phone.

Tell charging trouble from short battery life
A phone that will not charge or turn on needs a different first check from one that charges but runs down quickly. For charging problems, rule out the cable, adapter, outlet and visible port debris before assuming the battery has failed. For fast drain, consider whether usage, heat or a recently active app changed. Neither symptom identifies a failed component on its own.

- Check the connection. Make sure the cable is firmly seated at both ends, then try a compatible, known-working cable, adapter and outlet. Google’s Android charging guidance recommends these basic checks; they are general Android instructions, not Nokia-specific service steps.
- Look at the charging port. Check visually for lint or debris. Do not insert metal objects or force anything into the port. If the connection appears damaged or the phone still will not respond, stop troubleshooting and seek model-specific support.
- Consider the screen. A blank display does not necessarily mean the phone has no power; a screen fault is one possibility. If practical, check whether the phone responds to a call or shows another sign of power, then arrange an assessment if the screen remains blank.
If compatible accessories and these basic checks do not help, contact HMD support or a local authorized repair provider. The available route depends on your country, device and warranty status.

If the phone charges but runs down quickly
Compare the current runtime with your own usual use rather than treating a single short day as proof of battery failure. Check battery usage and recently installed or unusually active apps, and consider whether you have been using high-drain features such as hotspot, navigation, streaming, gaming or high screen brightness. Google notes that heat can make a battery drain faster and that settings and usage affect runtime in its Android battery-life guidance. Let a hot phone return to a normal temperature and review usage; if the problem continues during ordinary use, arrange a model-specific assessment.

These are triage clues, not a remote diagnosis. More than one fault can exist, and symptoms alone cannot establish which component has failed.

When to request a repair assessment
Contact support or a repair provider if the phone continues to have charging trouble after the basic accessory checks, shuts down unexpectedly, or still has very short runtime during ordinary use. This is especially important if the port looks damaged, the screen remains blank despite other signs of power, or you suspect swelling. HMD’s support site provides battery and charging help, repair and replacement information, and care-center routes; what is available depends on the handset, country and warranty status.
Identify the exact Nokia model before buying a battery
Look up the full model name or number in Settings or on the device, then check local support, warranty status and authorized repair options before ordering parts or tools. Repair guidance is model-specific: for example, the HMD Fusion guide names tools and procedures for HMD Fusion only. It does not establish that a battery or procedure fits another Nokia handset.
