The quickest reliable check is Settings > Battery > Battery Health (or Battery Health & Charging). Read both Maximum Capacity and Peak Performance Capability. A significantly degraded message, repeated shutdowns, or battery life that no longer covers your normal day are reasons to obtain a model-specific service estimate. A percentage by itself is not a universal replacement deadline.
Check your iPhone’s battery health
Use the built-in report before deciding on a repair. The wording varies slightly by iPhone model and iOS version, but the information is found in the Battery settings.

If the menu does not appear, the phone may be running an older iOS release, the battery may not be reporting normally, or the device may have a battery that the system cannot verify. Apple says displayed battery-health information may be inaccurate in that situation; arrange an inspection rather than treating the number as a diagnosis.
What Maximum Capacity means
Maximum Capacity compares the battery’s current estimated capacity with its capacity when new. A reading of 90%, for example, means the estimate is about 90% of the original capacity, not that the phone will operate for exactly 90% as many hours in every situation.

Lower capacity can reduce the time between charges. Actual runtime also depends on signal strength, screen brightness, temperature, app activity, background tasks, gaming, camera use and charging habits. Two phones with the same percentage can therefore provide noticeably different runtimes.
The figure is an estimate that can change as the phone gathers more data. It should be used with your experience of the device, not as a stand-alone pass/fail test.
What Peak Performance Capability tells you
This section addresses whether the battery can deliver the short bursts of power the iPhone may need for processor-intensive tasks. When the report says, Your battery is currently supporting normal peak performance.
, Apple is indicating that normal performance management is not being applied for battery-power reasons. That message alone is not a reason to replace the battery.

An aged battery can be less able to supply peak power. In some circumstances that can contribute to an unexpected shutdown. iOS may then apply performance management to reduce the chance of another shutdown. The report can explain that management and may offer an option to disable it; doing so can increase the risk of another shutdown, so it is not a substitute for a battery assessment.
Messages and symptoms that justify a service estimate
“Your battery’s health is significantly degraded”
Apple’s degraded-health notice says: Your battery’s health is significantly degraded. An Apple Authorised Service Provider can replace the battery to restore full performance and capacity.
This is the clearest built-in signal that arranging service is sensible.
Apple says this message does not, by itself, indicate a safety issue. It does mean that more noticeable battery-life and performance problems may occur, and Apple recommends service to improve the experience.
Persistent short runtime
Consider service when the phone regularly needs a top-up long before your normal charging routine, provided the change is not explained by a new app, poor cellular reception, unusually cold or hot conditions, or a temporary software task such as a major photo-library analysis.

Unexpected shutdowns
Repeated shutdowns while the battery still shows charge are a stronger warning than an isolated restart. Record when they happen, the displayed charge level, temperature and the app in use. Those details help a technician distinguish a battery-power problem from a software or hardware fault.

Performance management or a failed verification
A message about performance management, an inability to verify the battery, or a health screen that cannot provide reliable information warrants a check. Do not infer a precise capacity percentage when iOS says the information may not be accurate.
Do not use 80% as an automatic replacement rule
Apple publishes design expectations, not a promise that every battery reaches a particular percentage at a particular age. Under ideal conditions, Apple’s current support guidance says:

A complete charge cycle is accumulated when you have used a total of 100% of the battery’s capacity, even if that use occurs across several partial discharges. Charging from 50% to 100% is not, by itself, a complete cycle.

Temperature, time, charging pattern and workload can make an individual battery age faster or slower than the design expectation. A phone at 79% that still meets your needs may not require immediate replacement, while a phone at a higher percentage with shutdowns or unusable runtime may deserve inspection.
These figures are most useful as context. They help explain why an older phone may have less endurance, but they do not tell you how many hours your particular device should last or establish a warranty decision. Judge the report alongside the way you use the phone: navigation, games, video calls and camera work place different demands on a battery than occasional messaging.
The iPhone 11 recalibration caveat
On iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, Apple says the battery-health reporting system can recalibrate over regular charge cycles. The process may take a few weeks.
During recalibration, the displayed maximum-capacity estimate or peak-performance information may change. If your iPhone 11 family device explicitly reports that recalibration is in progress and it is otherwise usable, continue normal charging and use when practical, then check the report again after the process has had time to complete.

Do not treat a temporary recalibration notice as proof that the battery has suddenly failed. Conversely, persistent symptoms after recalibration still justify a service estimate. If the phone becomes difficult to use, shuts down repeatedly or shows another warning, you do not need to wait for the recalibration period before asking for an inspection.

A practical decision guide

The best choice depends on whether you value a provider’s inspection and support or are prepared to accept repair risk. A lower advertised price is not a useful comparison if it excludes inspection, uses an incompatible battery or leaves another fault unresolved. Ask what is included before authorizing work.
How to arrange an official replacement
Apple offers in-person and mail-in service routes. Start with Apple’s service and repair estimate process, select the exact iPhone model and describe the battery issue. Apple says the device must be inspected for a personalized estimate, so an online figure should not be treated as a guaranteed final charge. Authorized providers may set their own fees.
Because the model, country and service condition affect the quote, obtain the estimate using the exact phone rather than relying on a price for a similar-looking iPhone. If the inspection finds damage beyond the battery, ask whether that changes the proposed work and cost. You can then decide whether the repair still makes sense compared with continuing to use the phone or replacing the handset.

- Back up the iPhone to iCloud or a computer.
- Install any pending iOS update that you are comfortable applying, but do not erase the phone until the backup is confirmed.
- Record the model, storage capacity, serial number and the exact battery-health messages.
- Note shutdown times, charge levels and other repeatable symptoms.
- Remove payment cards and follow Apple’s instructions for turning off Find My if the service center requires it.
- Ask whether the quoted work covers only the battery or whether inspection has identified another fault.
Service is the lower-risk option when you need verified parts, model compatibility and a repair provider that can inspect the phone for related damage. The final price varies by model, region, warranty or service coverage, and inspection result; there is no single price that applies to every iPhone.
When a DIY battery replacement is reasonable
A self-repair can be appropriate only when you have confirmed the exact model, understand the procedure and accept the risks. iFixit’s iPhone 15 guide identifies a replacement battery and adhesive as required and offers a kit containing the parts and tools. That information is specific to the guide’s model and should not be generalized to another iPhone.
Check these conditions first
- Identify the exact model and regional variant; batteries and adhesive layouts are model-specific.
- Obtain a battery intended for that model, plus the correct replacement adhesive and appropriate tools.
- Read the complete repair guide before opening the phone, including warnings about display cables, seals and adhesive removal.
- Have a safe, clean workspace and a plan for storing the removed battery and recycling it.
- Accept that opening the phone can compromise water resistance and that an error can damage the display, connectors or battery.
A replacement kit is a repair solution, not a diagnostic instrument. Buying one before confirming that the battery is the cause can leave you with an incompatible part or fail to fix a problem caused by charging hardware, software or another component.
Stop if the battery is damaged
Do not puncture, bend, crush or heat a swollen, leaking or visibly damaged battery. Stop the repair and use a qualified service channel. Lithium-ion batteries can be hazardous when mishandled.

High background activity
Open Settings > Battery and review the activity list. A recently installed or updated app, heavy background location use, photo processing or extensive video playback can reduce runtime without indicating a failed battery.

Poor cellular reception
A phone working hard to maintain a weak signal can consume substantially more power. Compare battery behavior in a location with reliable Wi-Fi or cellular coverage before concluding that capacity is the only problem.
Temperature
Very cold conditions can temporarily reduce available performance, while heat accelerates battery aging. Let the phone return to a normal operating temperature and reassess rather than judging it during an extreme-temperature event.
Charging equipment or port problems
If the phone charges intermittently, inspect the cable, power adapter and port for obvious debris or damage. A charging fault can look like poor battery life because the phone never reaches a full charge. Do not insert objects into the port or continue using damaged charging equipment.
Unexpected software behavior
If the battery decline began immediately after an update or app change, allow routine background work to finish, restart the phone and review Battery settings again. Persistent symptoms, however, should still be reported during a service inspection.

A correctly installed replacement should restore the battery’s available capacity to the level appropriate for a new battery of that model, but it will not increase the phone’s original design capacity or fix unrelated power drains. Recheck Settings > Battery > Battery Health after service and observe real-world runtime over several normal days rather than judging it from one charge.
If the phone still shuts down, charges erratically or loses power unusually quickly after replacement, return to the provider and describe the same measured symptoms. The remaining fault may involve the charging system, logic board, software or another component.
Questions to answer before choosing replacement
- What exact iPhone model is it?
- Which iOS version is installed?
- What are the current Maximum Capacity and Peak Performance Capability messages?
- How many hours or tasks does the phone complete now compared with your normal routine?
- Are shutdowns repeatable, and at what displayed charge level?
- Is the iPhone 11 family recalibration notice active?
- Do you prefer inspected Apple or authorized-provider service, or do you have the skills and model-specific parts for DIY repair?
Those answers provide a more useful decision than applying a single percentage cutoff. If the report says normal peak performance and the phone meets your needs, continue using it. If iOS reports significant degradation or the symptoms interfere with ordinary use, obtain an inspection and a model-specific estimate.

What does Maximum Capacity mean on iPhone?
