Start with the reversible checks: reseat the earbuds, try compatible tips, inspect and gently clean the sound outlets, test another audio source, and check volume and left-right balance. Then check charging, Bluetooth, software, and the reset instructions for your exact model. If the problem remains, contact the manufacturer; no universal home test proves that an earbud’s hardware has failed.
First, note what the problem sounds like
Identify whether the sound is muffled, unusually quiet, distorted, intermittent, or absent, and whether it affects one earbud or both. Note when it began and whether anything changed—for example, the tips, exposure to moisture, a software update, or the playback device. Compare the earbuds at a comfortable volume. Avoid turning the volume up to compensate until you have checked for an obstruction or a balance setting.

Check fit and seal before suspecting a fault
- Reseat both earbuds as described in their manual, and make sure each tip is attached correctly.
- Try another compatible tip size. The right and left ears may need different sizes; Sony says the optimal size can differ between ears in its IER-M500 support instructions.
- If your model offers a fit or seal test in its app, follow that model’s instructions.
If bass, perceived loudness, or noise reduction changes after reseating or changing tips, that is useful evidence that fit contributes to the sound. It does not, by itself, establish that the earbuds are fault-free. Bose likewise recommends trying another eartip or stability-band size when fit, comfort, or sound is not as expected: Bose’s fit guidance.

Inspect the tips and sound outlets
With detachable tips removed as directed by the manufacturer, look for wax or dirt on the tip or mesh, damaged or misshapen tips, and moisture near the sound outlet. A blocked sound path can reduce or alter output in a way that resembles a device fault.

Cleaning instructions are model-specific. For the IER-M500, Sony advises lightly rotating a cotton swab over the removed tip’s mesh, avoiding sharp objects such as toothpicks or pen tips, and replacing tips that are cracked, peeling, chipped, or torn. For moisture in that model’s sound-tube outlet, Sony says to point it downward and tap it lightly against a dry cloth about five times. See the Sony instructions for the IER-M500; do not treat them as universal directions for other models or push debris into a mesh.
Bose says the QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) have eartips with integrated wax guards that can clog, and directs owners to its product cleaning instructions. Avoid applying liquids or tools based on advice for a different model.

Rule out the track, app, and audio settings
- Try a different track and another app; if available, compare with locally stored audio.
- Check the playback device’s volume and left-right balance, including accessibility settings.
- If the problem occurs only with one app, track, or device, investigate that source or its settings before concluding the earbuds are faulty.

- Confirm both earbuds are charged and connected.
- Test with the phone nearby, and disconnect other playback devices or sources where practical.
- If dropouts continue, follow your model’s instructions to forget and re-pair the earbuds, update software, or reset them. Reset procedures vary by model, so do not rely on a generic button sequence.
Bose’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance recommends testing with one device connected, reducing distance and interference, and forgetting and re-pairing when dropouts persist. Use your earbud manufacturer’s model-specific page for reset and software steps.

Compare the clues without treating them as a diagnosis

These are troubleshooting clues, not validated probabilities or a scoring system. The cited manufacturer guidance does not provide a cross-brand home test that conclusively separates driver damage from every internal, software, or connection issue.

Contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider if one side remains much quieter, distorted, silent, or intermittent after the checks above. Tell support which devices and sources reproduce the symptom and which steps you tried. That gives them a useful starting point without presenting a guess as a diagnosis.

If a tip is worn or you need to test a different fit, check the exact earbud model’s compatibility list before buying replacement tips. A replacement tip is not a substitute for cleaning, settings checks, warranty support, or repair.
