Look for the word “sponsored”: OpenAI says paid placements are labeled and visually separated from ChatGPT’s response. Product results and Shopping Research comparisons, by contrast, are described by OpenAI as organic—not ads. A product card or flattering label alone does not prove an item is sponsored, verified, or endorsed.
How to identify a ChatGPT ad
OpenAI says ads can appear below the end of a response and are clearly labeled “sponsored,” with visual separation from the response. The label and placement are the clearest signs that you are looking at a paid placement. See OpenAI’s advertising help page for its current description.
- “Sponsored” label: Treat an explicitly labeled placement as an ad.
- Separate placement: OpenAI describes ads as visually distinct from the answer, and says they can appear below it.
Do not infer that a result is organic merely because the product is a real item sold by a retailer. A product can appear within a sponsored placement; the label and placement type matter.
How ordinary product results differ
OpenAI says product results are selected independently by ChatGPT, are not ads, and are not influenced by OpenAI partnerships. They may appear as product cards or in shopping-related responses. OpenAI says it surfaces products it considers relevant to the request using the query, context, structured product metadata, and other information; not every available product will necessarily appear, and the model can misread a user’s intent. Its shopping help page explains the current product-result experience.
That is OpenAI’s description of how these results are selected, not an independent audit of every interface or a guarantee that a result is comprehensive, current, or best for you.

Shopping Research is a separate comparison experience
Shopping Research creates a product-comparison guide using public retail information, product information, and, where available, merchant data through the Agentic Commerce Protocol. OpenAI describes its results as organic and separate from ads. Guides may compare attributes such as price, features, and reviews, and may include top picks, trade-offs, and links to merchants. See OpenAI’s Shopping Research guide.
A comparison guide is product discovery, not a sponsored placement under OpenAI’s stated distinction. Still, recommendations and summaries can be imperfect; check the linked retailer’s listing before deciding.

Labels such as “Budget-friendly” or “Most popular” may be generated descriptions. OpenAI says they are not guarantees or verified statements. They do not establish that a product is sponsored, the lowest-priced option, independently verified, or endorsed by OpenAI. Product information and summaries may also be inaccurate.
Likewise, the presence of a product card alone is not a sponsorship disclosure. Use the explicit sponsored label to identify a paid placement; interpret other product labels as descriptions rather than proof.
Verify details with the retailer before buying
Organic selection does not ensure that product details are complete or up to date. Prices may lag behind retailer updates, and availability can be stale or mistaken. Before purchasing, open the merchant listing and confirm the final price, taxes, fees, shipping, availability, and any relevant return or warranty terms.

Who may see ads, and where
As described on OpenAI’s help page, ad testing began in the United States on February 9, 2026, with a gradual rollout to eligible Free and Go users in select regions. OpenAI says ads may appear for users on Free and Go plans; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will not have ads. This is rollout information, not a guarantee that every eligible user or conversation will show an ad. Availability and presentation can change, so consult the current ad FAQ for the latest details.
