Short answer: you cannot establish authenticity from visual intuition or one AI detector. Preserve the best copy, inspect signed provenance and supported watermarks, search for earlier appearances, and verify the claimed people, place, date, and event with independent reporting. A positive signal can explain where a file came from; a missing signal never proves that a scene is real.
What “authentic” can mean
An alarming picture or clip raises several different questions, and they should not be collapsed into one “real or fake” test:

- Was the file created or edited with an AI-enabled tool?
- Has the file been altered, cropped, recompressed, or re-encoded since creation?
- Does the scene depict a real event, person, place, and time?
- Is the caption attached to the file accurate?
- Who made or owns it, and is it being shown in the right context?
Content Credentials, watermarks, and reverse-search tools answer different parts of that list. None is a universal authenticity certificate. Google’s Gemini guidance explicitly says its origin and history information can help people make informed decisions, but does not tell them that a file is definitely AI-generated: Google Gemini Help. OpenAI gives the same warning for its own supported provenance signals: they are indicators of origin, not a guarantee that content is accurate, unedited, legally owned, or correctly contextualized: OpenAI Help Center.

Work from the strongest available file and record what each check actually establishes. The order matters because reposts and screenshots can destroy evidence that would otherwise be available.

1. Preserve the best available copy
Save the original file or a direct download from the earliest credible source. A screenshot, screen recording, messaging-app export, or social-media recompression may remove metadata and degrade a watermark. Keep the URL, account name, post date, and a copy of the surrounding caption. Do not edit the file before checking it; even opening and re-saving it in an editor can create a new file without the original history.
- Prefer the camera or creator’s original upload over a repost.
- For video, retain the complete file rather than a short screen capture.
- For a still image, save the highest-resolution version available and note its pixel dimensions.
- Record when you downloaded it. A later platform edit can change what a verifier sees.
2. Inspect Content Credentials (C2PA) when supported
Content Credentials are signed, file-bound provenance records. Depending on the participating app or device, they can identify a creator or modifier, the software or hardware used, the time of an action, and a sequence of edits. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Research Integrity explains how compatible edits can update the record while preserving a signed history: HHS ORI’s Content Provenance overview.
Open a verifier that supports the media format and the credential version, then read the details rather than stopping at a headline label. Look for:

- Creation action: whether the file was captured, generated, or imported.
- Edit actions: cropping, retouching, compositing, transcoding, or other changes.
- Validation state: whether the signature is intact and the record is compatible with the verifier.
- AI-use information: a statement that a participating tool was used, if the tool records it.
Google describes Content Credentials as a cross-device and cross-app standard that can record AI and non-AI creation or editing. Its verification works only for files from apps or devices that support compatible versions: Gemini Help. A credential therefore tells you about the signed file history, not whether the depicted event happened as claimed.
3. Check a supported watermark separately
A watermark is different from metadata. SynthID, for example, is embedded in supported image pixels or audio waveforms and is checked with a compatible verification system. It may survive some transformations that remove ordinary metadata, but it is not present in every generator or every media type. HHS ORI describes the distinction between embedded signals and signed file metadata at ori.hhs.gov/content-provenance.
Use the provider’s own checker when you know (or reasonably suspect) which model produced the file and the checker supports that format. OpenAI documents checks for C2PA credentials in images and SynthID signals in supported images and audio: OpenAI’s content-provenance documentation. A result from that check is scoped to supported OpenAI signals; it is not a scan of every image or video generator.

Google reports that SynthID had watermarked more than 100 billion images and videos and 60,000 years of audio across its generative-media products, and that Gemini verification had been used 50 million times. Those are company-reported deployment and usage totals, not accuracy or detection-rate measurements: Google’s 2026 announcement.
4. Search for earlier appearances and source context
Run the image through a reverse-image search and search distinctive frames from a video. Google recommends Lens, AI Mode, Circle to Search, and Gemini in Chrome for researching an image’s origin: Google’s tools announcement. On supported results, “About this image” can show when similar material was first indexed, other pages using it, and available metadata. Ofcom’s attribution toolkit explains how such metadata and platform labels can aid investigation: Ofcom’s Deepfake Defences 2 toolkit.
Treat matches as leads, not proof. A search result may surface the earliest known copy rather than the true original, and a platform may have indexed a misleading caption. Compare crops, compression marks, shadows, audio cuts, and the exact wording of captions across versions. If a supposedly breaking event appeared online months or years earlier in a different location, that is strong evidence against the current caption even if the pixels themselves are genuine.
5. Verify the claim around the file
Separate the visual object from the story attached to it. Search the alleged location, date, people, and event in reputable independent reporting, official statements, weather or transport records, and contemporaneous eyewitness material. Look for multiple sources that do not simply copy one another.
- Check whether the claimed place has the architecture, road markings, language, vegetation, and weather shown.
- Check time zones and shadows against the claimed date and location when those details matter.
- Search names and quotations independently instead of relying on text embedded in the post.
- For a public emergency, compare the clip with reports from local authorities and established newsrooms.
A real photograph can be old, staged, selectively edited, or paired with a false caption. Provenance attaches to the file; it cannot certify the truth of the accompanying claim.

Write down the exact result, the file you tested, and the checker’s scope. Use language that matches the evidence:

- “A supported provenance signal was detected.” This indicates a recorded origin or watermark from the named ecosystem.
- “No supported signal was found.” The checker did not find what it knows how to detect.
- “The provenance could not be checked.” The file, format, version, or service was incompatible or unavailable.
- “The caption is contradicted by independent evidence.” This is a claim about context, not necessarily about whether the pixels were generated.
Reserve “proven real” or “proven fake” for cases where independent evidence establishes that conclusion. A detector label by itself does not meet that standard.
How the main signals differ

How to interpret a positive or negative result
When credentials show AI use
A signed record indicating that a participating AI tool generated or edited the file is useful evidence about origin. It does not tell you whether the creator fabricated a real-world claim, used a real photograph as input, omitted material context, or had permission to use someone else’s likeness. Read the complete action history: an image can begin as a camera capture and later receive an AI edit, or begin as a generated file and undergo ordinary editing.
When credentials are absent
Absence is common. A camera, editor, social platform, or messaging service may never have created credentials; a re-encoding may strip them; and a verifier may not support the file’s format or credential version. “No credentials” therefore means only that no readable, compatible record was found.

When a watermark is detected
A detected watermark can support an association with the provider and media type covered by that watermark. It does not identify the human operator, establish motive, or prove that the result was posted without later editing. Preserve the original file and the checker’s report if the distinction matters for a dispute.
When a watermark is not detected
OpenAI notes that editing, conversion, and sharing can remove metadata, while degradation can affect a watermark. Its documentation also says a “not detected” result does not rule out generation with OpenAI tools when signals were stripped or degraded, and it says nothing about generation by another company: OpenAI’s documentation. The same logic applies to any provider-limited checker.
Common failure modes and what to do instead
Judging by hands, text, or facial detail alone
Visual oddities can be clues, but modern generation and ordinary compression both produce artifacts. Real images can contain unusual anatomy, motion blur, reflections, or warped text. Use visual inspection to decide what to investigate, never as the final verdict.

Uploading a screenshot and treating the result as definitive
A screenshot may remove the original metadata and alter pixel-level signals. Find the source file or the earliest direct upload, then test that copy. If only a screenshot exists, state that the strongest evidence was unavailable.
Assuming one provider’s checker covers every model
Coverage is provider- and format-specific. Confirm which signals a service supports before interpreting its result. A checker that recognizes one company’s watermark cannot classify media from all other systems.
Confusing origin with truth
A credential can show that a file passed through a named tool; it cannot show that the scene depicts a real event. Conversely, an uncredentialed camera photo can be authentic while its caption is false. Always perform the context check separately.
Overstating a company-reported usage or deployment number
Figures such as Google’s “more than 100 billion” watermarked images and videos or 50 million Gemini verification uses describe deployment or usage, not correctness. Do not turn them into claims about accuracy, coverage of the internet, or the probability that a particular file is genuine.
Ignoring quotas and format limits
Google’s Gemini help page lists approximately 10 image checks, 10 video checks (up to five minutes total), and 10 audio checks (up to three hours total) in a rolling 24-hour window, as accessed in 2026. Limits and supported formats can change, so consult the current page before relying on a quota: Gemini Help.

Practical examples
A “live” disaster video reposted during an emergency
- Download the longest, highest-quality copy and preserve the post URL and timestamp.
- Extract several distinctive frames and reverse-search them.
- Compare the earliest matching upload with the current caption; check for a different country, season, or event.
- Inspect credentials and supported watermarks on the original file, if available.
- Check local authority statements and independent reporting for the claimed incident.
If the same footage predates the alleged emergency, report that the current claim is false or unsupported. Do not claim that the underlying video is AI-generated unless a supported signal or independent technical evidence says so.
A frightening portrait said to show a real person
- Search the face and distinctive background elements, not just the caption.
- Check whether the earliest source identifies a generated image, an illustration, or a manipulated photograph.
- Inspect the complete credential history for compositing or face-editing actions.
- Seek confirmation from the person, an authorized representative, or reliable reporting before identifying them.
A provider signal may establish that an AI tool was involved, but it does not establish the person’s identity, consent, or the truth of the allegation attached to the portrait.
What current tools cannot certify
No authoritative, current benchmark establishes one accuracy rate for general-purpose AI-image and AI-video detectors across new generators, edits, crops, reposts, and recompression. Performance varies with the system, signal, file condition, and verifier. Treat every result as scoped evidence rather than a probability that the whole story is true.
Provenance systems also do not automatically settle copyright, legal ownership, identity, intent, or whether a scene was staged. Those questions require documents, witnesses, platform records, or other evidence outside the file’s technical history.
A concise decision checklist
- Do I have the original file, or only a screenshot or repost?
- Does a compatible verifier show signed Content Credentials?
- Does a supported provider checker find an embedded watermark?
- What exactly does that checker cover, and what does “not detected” mean?
- Where did reverse search find earlier versions?
- Do independent sources confirm the claimed person, place, date, and event?
- Am I describing a supported signal, a missing signal, or a context contradiction without turning it into a universal verdict?
How to phrase a responsible conclusion
A careful conclusion might read: “The original file contains a valid credential indicating editing with a supported AI tool. Reverse search also finds earlier copies with a different caption. The file’s provenance is documented, but the claim that it shows yesterday’s event is not supported.”
Or: “No supported credential or watermark was detected in the downloaded copy. Because the clip was reposted and recompressed, that negative result cannot establish that it is authentic. Independent sources have not confirmed the location or date.”
Those statements tell readers what was checked, what the evidence means, and where uncertainty remains—without presenting a limited detector result as proof.
