Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAn SSD may be failing if files become unreadable, the computer repeatedly crashes while booting, a drive-health tool reports a warning, or the drive vanishes from BIOS or the operating system. None of those clues alone proves the SSD is dead: a loose connection, unsupported configuration, or another system problem can look similar. If the drive is still readable, copy important files somewhere safe before troubleshooting.
Which symptoms can point to SSD failure?
Samsung lists several possible warning signs: trouble reading, saving, or moving files; intermittent crashes during boot; and SMART errors. These symptoms warrant attention, but they are not a diagnosis. File corruption and other computer problems can also cause errors, and not every SSD failure is preceded by a detectable warning.

- File read or write errors: Files that will not open, save, or move can indicate a problem with the drive or its data.
- Repeated boot crashes: Intermittent crashes while starting the computer are a warning sign, especially when they occur alongside other drive symptoms.
- SMART or health warning: Treat a warning from a supported drive-health tool seriously. Available SMART details and their interpretation vary by drive; a single percentage or generic status is not proof that a drive is healthy.
- Drive missing from BIOS or the operating system: This can mean the SSD has failed, but it can also result from a cable, port, configuration, or host-support issue.
Samsung describes these as warning signs, not a guarantee that failure is imminent or that the drive is beyond recovery. Samsung Support’s SSD guidance explains the symptoms and data-loss precautions.

Protect files before running checks
If the SSD still opens and its files can be read, copy the most important data to a different drive or another safe destination first. Do this before attempting repairs, updates, formatting, or operating-system reinstallation. A backup on another device or location is safer than keeping the only copy on the suspect SSD.

Samsung cautions that recovery can be difficult after an SSD has actually failed. Its support guidance states: “It can be difficult to recover data from an SSD that has actually failed.” If irreplaceable files have no backup and the drive is unstable or unreadable, consider professional data recovery before trying further DIY steps. Recovery is not guaranteed.
Check a drive that is missing from BIOS
BIOS detection problems do not by themselves establish that the SSD is dead. Intel’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the drive’s supported form factor, the correct motherboard port and cable, other supported connectors, physical damage, and motherboard support. Its article was last reviewed November 7, 2022, so confirm current details in the computer and motherboard documentation.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
- Confirm compatibility: Check the computer or motherboard specifications for the SSD form factor and interface it supports. M.2 describes a form factor; it does not by itself identify the drive’s protocol or guarantee compatibility.
- Check the connection: With the system powered off and following the manufacturer’s safety instructions, verify the drive is seated and connected to the correct supported port. For a cabled drive, check both the data cable and power connection.
- Try another supported connection: If the host provides another compatible port or cable, test it. Inspect the SSD, connector, and cable for visible damage.
- Isolate the drive from the computer: Test the suspect SSD in another compatible system, if available. Also test a known-working compatible SSD in the original computer.
- Use the pattern to narrow the cause: If the suspect SSD is not detected in another compatible system but another SSD works in the original one, the suspect drive becomes a stronger concern. If another SSD also fails in the original computer, investigate the host, port, or configuration. These checks are clues, not a substitute for manufacturer diagnosis.
If the issue persists after checking supported connections and compatibility, Intel advises contacting the system or computer manufacturer. Intel’s SSD-not-detected-in-BIOS troubleshooting article provides the host-side checks.

Use a diagnostic utility supported for the exact SSD model. For Samsung drives, Samsung recommends Magician to examine SMART status; certain models also support a diagnostic scan. The available functions depend on the drive. SanDisk likewise notes that the health and remaining-life details shown depend on the SSD, so do not assume every model reports the same attributes.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop

- The available storage capacity may vary.
Follow the current instructions for your drive model and interpret the result conservatively. A SMART warning or failed manufacturer diagnostic is a serious reason to plan for replacement and protect remaining data. A clean result cannot guarantee future reliability, and tool features or health indicators are not uniform across manufacturers.
Samsung’s SSD support page covers Magician and SMART checks. For SanDisk drives, consult SanDisk’s drive-life guidance for the information available on supported models.

Decide whether to replace the SSD or seek recovery
A failed manufacturer test or a persistent SMART warning supports treating the drive as failing. Seagate’s support guidance says a test-generated error means the drive needs replacement, but diagnostic tools and their interpretations are manufacturer-specific. A missing BIOS entry still needs connection and compatibility checks before attributing it to the SSD.
If the drive is confirmed as failed, replacement is appropriate when you have protected any data you need or decided that recovery is not necessary. Before choosing a replacement, verify the computer supports its interface and form factor, check the required capacity, and confirm the installation requirements. Do not assume that every M.2 SSD is interchangeable.

When important files exist only on an unstable or failed drive, weigh recovery before replacement or further troubleshooting. Samsung notes that recovery after actual SSD failure can be difficult; no recovery outcome should be promised.
