Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Your graphics card is fast enough if it runs the games you actually play at your chosen resolution and settings with performance that feels acceptable to you. Its age, model name, or VRAM capacity alone cannot settle the question. Test representative gameplay, check for stutter as well as average speed, and try sensible settings changes before deciding whether to replace it.
Set your performance target before testing
Choose two or three games that reflect what you play, including the most demanding game you want to run. For each, note your monitor resolution and refresh rate, graphics preset, and whether you use demanding features such as ray tracing. Decide what average performance and moment-to-moment smoothness you want.

There is no universal FPS threshold for every game or player: a slower strategy game and a latency-sensitive shooter can call for different targets. RTINGS labels 60 FPS a “Good value” in its laptop average-FPS methodology, but that is its evaluation convention, not an industry-wide cutoff or a guarantee of what you will find acceptable. RTINGS’ gaming performance methodology also notes that slower-reaction games can be playable at lower rates.
Check the game’s requirements, but treat them as a screen
Look up the current minimum and recommended GPU and CPU requirements on the game publisher’s official page. Requirements help flag potential compatibility problems; they do not predict exactly how the game will perform on your system.

- Minimum requirements: Meeting them does not promise your preferred frame rate or visual quality. The game may require reduced settings to be playable.
- Recommended requirements: These are not a promise that every scene will meet your personal performance target.
- Missing requirements data: Its absence does not prove your hardware is incompatible.
For example, AMD’s Upgrade Advisor documentation describes a compatibility tool, but its available results depend on supported data and software state. Treat such tools as a starting point, not a substitute for testing your games.
Measure performance in representative gameplay
Use a game’s built-in benchmark if it reflects the scenes you play, or repeat the same gameplay route under the same conditions. Test at the resolution and settings you intend to use; changing the scene, driver, graphics API, or upscaling settings can make comparisons misleading.

- Record the game version, driver, resolution, graphics settings, and any upscaling or frame-generation options.
- Run the benchmark or route and record average FPS and 1% low. Repeat runs if results vary noticeably.
- If you see severe hitching, also inspect a frame-time plot or 0.1% low where your monitoring tool provides them.
NVIDIA’s FrameView 1.7 User Guide defines average FPS and 1% low. It describes 1% low as a measure of stutter: “the closer 1% Low is to Avg FPS, the more consistent the experience will be.” A 1% low is an average of the slowest one percent of frames, not a promise that every moment stays above that rate.
Read the average and lows together
A high average can hide uneven delivery. If your 1% low is far below the average, or gameplay visibly stutters, focus on the affected scene and settings instead of relying on the headline number. Summary metrics can also smooth over very brief frame-time spikes; GamersNexus’ frame-time analysis illustrates this limitation in its specific tests.

- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
Compare like with like when judging two cards: use the same game build, scene, resolution, quality settings, upscaling and frame-generation state, and test platform where possible. Compare average FPS and 1% lows from matching tests rather than combining numbers from different setups.
Change settings and test again
If performance misses your target, change one major setting at a time and repeat the same test. Resolution, ray tracing, and overall visual quality can make a substantial difference to GPU load. Keep track of which changes improve performance and whether the resulting image remains acceptable to you.

AMD’s GPU comparison tool frames selection around factors including resolution, memory, compute, I/O, and upscaling. Its figures come from vendor internal labs, and AMD warns that results can vary and that the tool may contain inaccuracies or omissions. Use its charts as a lead, not as a neutral verdict: AMD’s comparison tool and product guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMake sure the GPU is the actual limit
Before blaming the graphics card, check whether another system limit is holding back performance. Low GPU utilization while FPS remains low can point to a CPU limit or frame cap, but neither observation proves the cause by itself. Also inspect temperatures, clocks, and power behavior; a thermal or power issue can prevent a GPU from performing normally.

- Look at GPU utilization alongside CPU activity during the slow scene.
- Check whether GPU temperatures, clocks, or power behavior change when performance drops.
Game requirements and upgrade tools may assess both CPU and GPU, so a graphics-card swap will not fix every performance shortfall.

A game’s reported VRAM allocation is not necessarily the same as the memory it must actively use. Judge memory behavior at your target resolution and texture settings rather than treating the allocation number as proof that the card has too little VRAM.
AMD’s examples show why test conditions matter. In figures dated June 28, 2023, AMD measured peak VRAM use at 4K maximum settings on an RX 6950 XT 16 GB system using Adrenalin Edition 23.7.1, a Ryzen 9 7900X, and 32 GB of DDR5-4800; AMD cautioned that system manufacturers may vary configurations. In a separate test described May 16, 2023, AMD compared an RX 6750 XT 12 GB with an RTX 4060 Ti 8 GB in Far Cry 6 at 1440p Ultra with high ray tracing, using named drivers and a Ryzen 9 7950X3D system. These vendor-specific examples do not establish a universal VRAM requirement for games or a rule that one capacity is enough. AMD’s published VRAM test examples.

Decide whether to keep the card
- Keep it if your real games meet your chosen target at settings and frame pacing you find acceptable.
- Adjust settings or investigate further if performance falls short but a lower resolution or less demanding features improve the result, or if a CPU, cap, thermal, or power limit may be involved.
- Consider replacing it if repeated tests still miss your target after reasonable settings changes and you have ruled out fixable system limits.
If you compare replacement options, check independent benchmarks at your target resolution and settings, alongside current price, VRAM, power draw, case fit, display connections, and the features you will actually use. AMD lists the Radeon RX 9070 with 16 GB of GDDR6 in its current high-resolution gaming guidance, but that is an example of a current product category—not an individualized recommendation. AMD Radeon RX 9070 product guidance. No universal age cutoff or cross-game FPS rule determines when a GPU is “too old.”
