Assume an unexpected iPhone text is suspicious when it pressures you to act, requests a password, verification code, payment or personal information, or contains a link whose destination does not match the real organization. Do not tap, reply, call the number in the message or open an attachment. Verify the claim through the organization’s known app, website or a phone number you already trust. A familiar name, logo or phone number can be spoofed, so the request and the independently checked destination matter more than the message’s appearance.
What makes an iPhone text message look like a scam?
Apple’s guidance groups suspicious messages with other social-engineering attempts: the sender tries to make you act before you think. A message can be a scam even when its spelling, logo and layout look professional. Conversely, an unexpected text from an unknown number is not automatically fraudulent. Real companies sometimes send alerts, and criminals can copy sender names or spoof contact details. Treat the following as clues that become more persuasive when several appear together, not as a single foolproof test.

| What you notice | Why it matters | Safer response |
|---|---|---|
| Urgency, threats or an immediate deadline | The message may be using pressure to prevent you from checking it. Typical threats include account closure, extra charges or a missed delivery. | Pause. Open the organization’s known app or type its familiar web address yourself. |
| A request for a password, security code, account number, Social Security number, card details or payment | Those details can let a criminal take over an account or move money. Apple says it never asks for passwords or security codes to provide support. | Do not provide the information. Contact the organization through a trusted channel. |
| A sender name, address or number that does not fit the claimed organization | Impersonators can use a different address or a spoofed number. A displayed name is not proof of identity. | Compare the message with contact details in an official app, statement, card or website you already know. |
| A link whose actual destination is not the organization’s genuine domain | A plausible-looking link can lead to a copycat sign-in page that captures your credentials. | Do not open it. Navigate to the known site independently instead. |
| An unsolicited attachment or an unusual format | Unexpected files and messages that differ sharply from the company’s normal communication are common phishing indicators. | Do not open or save the attachment. Verify the claim separately. |
| A prize, suspicious account activity, payment problem, invoice or delivery notice you did not expect | These are frequent lures in consumer scam texts. The theme alone does not prove fraud, but it deserves verification. | Check your account or order through the official app or website, not through the text. |
Apple lists mismatched sender details, an incorrect web address, unusual wording, requests for personal information and unsolicited attachments as phishing indicators in its social-engineering guidance. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes prize, account, payment, invoice and delivery stories in its consumer advice on spam texts.

Scammers can copy a company’s colors, name and tone, or make a phone display a familiar sender label. Those surface details are easy to imitate. Focus instead on what the message wants you to do and where that action would take you.

Requests a legitimate support team should not make by text
Do not send a password, one-time verification code, full payment-card number, account recovery answer or other sensitive identifier because a text demands it. Apple’s support statement is explicit: “Apple never asks for this information to provide support.” The surrounding guidance identifies passwords and security codes as the information at issue. A request for money, gift cards, cryptocurrency or a transfer is another reason to stop and verify through a known channel.
Links that imitate a real web address
A link can display familiar words while sending you somewhere else. On iPhone, touching and holding a link can show its destination, but do not use that preview as an invitation to visit a suspicious site. Apple advises not following suspicious links. The safest check is to ignore the link and enter the organization’s address yourself or use its official app. If the message claims to concern a bank, delivery, subscription or account, look for the same notice after signing in through the normal route.
Sender details are evidence, not authentication
An unfamiliar number can belong to a real business, and a familiar-looking number can be forged. Also consider whether you ever gave that organization permission to contact you by text. Compare the sender with a phone number printed on a card or statement, or with contact information in an app you opened independently. Never call a number supplied only in the suspicious message.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon scam stories and how to check each one
“Suspicious activity” or account closure
The text may claim someone logged in, that your account will be locked, or that you must verify immediately. Do not sign in through the message. Open the service’s known app or type its established address into Safari. If there is a genuine alert, it should appear after you sign in normally, or the company’s verified support channel can explain it.
Payment failure, refund or fake invoice
A payment-themed text may ask you to “confirm” a card, pay a small fee or dispute an invoice. Check the transaction in your bank or merchant account reached independently. A real payment issue can be resolved there without exposing card details to a link in a text.

Package delivery problem
Delivery notices often use a missed-address or small-redelivery-fee story. Look up the order in the retailer’s app or the carrier account you normally use. Do not use a tracking link or phone number supplied in the text. If no order exists in your records, treat the message as unsolicited.
Prize, gift or survey
A “free” prize may require a fee, tax payment or personal information. Do not pay to claim an unexpected award. Verify any promotion on the organization’s official website, reached without the text’s link. A prize story is a common lure, not evidence that you won anything.
A safe response workflow
Use this sequence whenever a text creates pressure or asks for information. It is designed to keep the suspicious message from becoming your source of contact details.
- Pause and leave the message untouched. Do not tap its link, open or save an attachment, reply, call its number or enter information. If the text is open, close Messages without interacting with its contents.
- Write down the claim, not the contact details. Note what the message says happened—such as a payment problem or delivery issue—so you can check that claim in a separate place. Do not copy a link into a browser.
- Check through an independent route. Open the organization’s official app, type a website address you already know, or call a number from a card, statement or official website you reached yourself. Do not use a link or phone number supplied in the text.
- Report the message using the controls available to you. Messages may show Report Junk or Report Spam. Carrier and country or region determine whether SMS, MMS or RCS reporting is offered.
- Block the sender if you do not want further delivery. Reporting and blocking have different purposes; reporting alone does not stop the sender from sending another message.
- Preserve only what is useful for a report. A screenshot can document the message. Do not forward the scam to friends as a warning if doing so could expose them to the link; share a description or an official report instead.
How to report and block a suspicious text on iPhone
Report an eligible unknown-sender message
Apple’s current iPhone guide gives separate paths depending on whether you opened the conversation. Menu names and availability can vary by iOS version, carrier and country or region.
- If the message is unopened: swipe left on the conversation in Messages, then choose Delete and Report Spam.
- If you opened it: use Report Spam beneath the message, then choose Delete and Report Spam.
- If it is an iMessage: reporting sends the message and sender information to Apple and permanently deletes the message from your iPhone.
- If it is SMS, MMS or RCS and the report option is missing: Apple says to contact your carrier. The feature is not exposed identically in every region.
Apple says a message cannot be reported after you have replied. If you responded, use the block controls and report through your carrier or the relevant organization rather than continuing the conversation. Details are in Apple’s iPhone guide to reporting spam and blocking senders.

Block the number
To block a specific contact in Messages, open the conversation, tap the sender icon at the top, tap Info, then tap Block Contact. Blocking prevents that contact’s messages from being delivered, and Apple says the sender is not told that you blocked them. Because reporting does not itself prevent delivery, use both actions when you want to submit a report and stop that sender.

Filter unknown senders
iPhone can separate messages from people who are not in your contacts. Filtering reduces interruptions but can also move a legitimate first-time message out of your normal inbox. Review the filtered area periodically if you are expecting a new contact, delivery or service alert. Feature names and placement depend on your installed iOS version.
How iOS 26’s spam folder works
Apple’s iOS 26 support article says Filter Spam is on by default. Messages identified as spam appear in a Spam folder without notifications. This is helpful for reducing distractions, but automatic filtering is not perfect.
Recover a message filtered by mistake
- Open the Spam folder in Messages.
- Open the message you want to keep.
- Choose Not Spam or Move to Inbox, using the label shown on your iPhone.
Review the folder before assuming a missing verification or delivery message was never sent. Apple documents these controls for iOS 26 and later in View and recover spam messages on your iPhone, published September 17, 2026.

Clicking a link does not by itself tell you whether information was stolen, but stop the interaction immediately. Do not continue through the page, download an attachment or enter credentials. Close the page and use the organization’s known app or website to check the underlying account claim.

If you entered an Apple Account password or security code
Apple advises changing the Apple Account password immediately if you may have entered it on a scam website and making sure two-factor authentication is enabled. Use Apple’s account settings reached independently, not a link from the text. If the same password is used elsewhere, change it through each service’s known website as well.
If you entered bank or payment information
Contact the bank, card issuer or payment service through a phone number or app you already trust. Tell the institution what information was entered and follow its instructions. The exact recovery steps depend on the account and payment method, so do not rely on a number in the suspicious message.
If you only opened the page
Do not provide additional information or return to the link. Check the relevant account through its official route and watch for unexpected login or payment activity. Keep the original message available for reporting, but do not reply to the sender.
How to report texts outside Apple’s controls
United States: forward to 7726 or report to the FTC
For U.S. mobile users, the FTC says you can forward a spam text to 7726 (SPAM) or submit a report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. These options are U.S.-specific; other countries use different reporting authorities and carrier procedures. Reporting helps providers and authorities identify campaigns, but it does not substitute for blocking the sender on your iPhone.
Messages claiming to be from Apple
Take a screenshot of a suspicious Apple-themed SMS and email it to [email protected], as Apple describes in its social-engineering guidance. Do not click the message’s link to obtain support or confirm the report.
Best Value
Examples: applying the checks without taking a risk
“Your account will close today”
The threat and deadline are pressure signals. Instead of tapping Verify now, open the service’s app from your Home Screen. If the account is healthy there, delete and report the message. If the app shows a real issue, use its built-in support path.
“A $1 delivery fee is required”
The fee and delivery story match a common lure. Check current orders in the retailer or carrier app. If no matching shipment exists, do not enter card details. If one does exist, resolve the address or payment issue in the app or through a phone number listed on the carrier’s official site.
“Apple Support needs your six-digit code”
Do not share the code. Apple’s support guidance says it never asks for passwords or security codes to provide support. Report the message, block the sender and send a screenshot to Apple’s phishing-report address.
Limits of scam detection
No single sign proves that a text is fraudulent. Typos are not required, and an unknown sender can be legitimate. A polished message can still be malicious, while a genuine service alert can arrive unexpectedly. The reliable discriminator is independent verification: compare the requested action with what the organization normally asks, compare contact details with a source you already trust, and avoid the message’s link and phone number. If you cannot verify the claim without using information supplied in the text, do not act on it.
