There is no single visual feature that proves an archaeological wooden object was a tool. Specialists weigh its find context, overall form, cross-section and surface marks against natural growth, biological damage and preservation changes. These clues can support an interpretation, but they do not authenticate an unspecified object on their own.
Start with the find context, not just the shape
Record where the wood was found, the layer it came from and what was associated with it, such as a structure or other artifacts. Context can help specialists assess whether an object fits a human activity. Shape alone cannot establish its age, cultural origin or purpose; those conclusions require evidence from the find and its archaeological setting.

The French Ministry of Culture describes dendroarchaeology as combining wood identification, morphology, analysis of marks of human or biological origin, and tree-ring study. Its glossary also describes wood as a biological record, a raw material and a cultural object produced by people: French Ministry of Culture archaeology glossary.

What to observe on the object
Overall form and cross-section
Note whether the piece is symmetrical, tapers consistently or has repeated shaping. Look at its cross-section and whether surfaces appear cut or split. Consider whether the form makes sense as an implement for a particular task. Size, cross-sectional shape and tool marks are among the features researchers use to study woodworking, but none is conclusive alone. A naturally curved branch, for example, may resemble a handle or point.

Surface marks
Record visible grooves, cuts, facets or other marks with photographs, drawings or scans. A coherent pattern may be consistent with shaping, but natural growth, roots, insects, fungi and decay can also affect the surface. Conversely, deterioration can erase or distort marks that were once present. The European dendroarchaeology review discusses how form and marks inform interpretation, while a review of waterlogged archaeological wood describes how degradation can change or obscure surface details: European dendroarchaeology review and waterlogged-wood preservation review.
Human shaping, natural damage and preservation can overlap
These explanations are not always mutually exclusive. A piece may have formed naturally and later been modified by people; damage or preservation changes may then complicate what remains. Specialists assess whether the observed features fit human workmanship better than plausible biological or natural alternatives, while accounting for what happened to the wood after burial.

Preservation is especially important for waterlogged finds. Wood can be fragile, and drying may lead to cell-wall collapse. The European review advises keeping waterlogged archaeological wood wrapped to limit drying and documenting it before sampling or conservation treatment. Do not clean, cut, dry or apply treatments to a possible find. Record its location and appearance, then contact the relevant archaeological authority, museum or archaeological wood conservator. Follow local requirements for reporting archaeological finds.

Wood identification is not proof of a tool
Wood anatomy examines microscopic cellular structure and may help identify the wood or growth features. It does not, by itself, show that a person shaped or used the piece. Preservation can make identification difficult: archaeological wood may be charred, waterlogged, desiccated or mineral-replaced. A review of archaeological wood identification cautions that advanced imaging does not replace specialist botanical training: Cartwright’s review of wood anatomy and identification.

Tree rings and growth anomalies can provide evidence about growth history and, in suitable cases, dating. That evidence does not alone establish whether the object functioned as a tool. Dendroarchaeological interpretation combines such findings with morphology and analysis of marks.

Microscopy and surface traces
Microscopy can help characterize wood anatomy and fine surface traces. Interpreting those traces requires relevant expertise: magnification may reveal detail, but it does not turn a consumer microscope into a definitive test of human workmanship.

Comparison with reference material
Use-wear interpretations are more informative when specialists compare traces with experimental reference material. What survives and what can be seen depends on the material worked and the action performed. Research on stone tools also shows how residues and their distribution can contribute to interpreting use, but this adjacent evidence is not a standalone test for whether a wooden fragment is a tool. See the Society for American Archaeology’s use-wear glossary and the experimental study “Wood residues on stone tools: experiments and archaeological evidence”.
