Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA sale price is a good deal only when the complete cost of an equivalent appliance is lower for the way you will use it. Compare the exact model and configuration, add delivery and installation charges, subtract only discounts and rebates you actually qualify for, then include expected energy, maintenance and repair costs over your ownership period. A large percentage-off label by itself proves very little.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) summarizes the principle this way: "The cost of owning a home appliance has three components: the initial purchase price, the cost of repairs and maintenance, and the cost to operate it." Use that framework before treating any markdown as a bargain.

Start with an apples-to-apples comparison
First make sure the products being compared are genuinely equivalent. Record the exact model number from the product label or specification sheet, not just a marketing name. A retailer can use a similar-looking name for a different capacity, finish, control package or regional configuration.

Verify the product identity
- Model number: Match every character, including suffixes that can identify a finish, voltage, door layout or bundled accessory.
- Capacity and dimensions: Compare usable capacity and the external width, height and depth that will fit your space.
- Configuration: Check door swing, freezer placement, venting, water connections, heating type and control layout.
- Included components: Confirm racks, hoses, power cords, ice makers, trim kits, filters and other parts that may be optional.
- Condition: New, open-box, returned, refurbished and floor-display units are different purchases. Record cosmetic damage, missing parts and any shortened warranty.
- Coverage and service: Note the manufacturer warranty, retailer service plan, labor coverage and exclusions.
If any of those items differs, you are comparing different offers rather than measuring a discount on the same appliance. A cheaper unit may still be the right choice, but its lower price should not be described as a saving against an equivalent product.

Use a comparison worksheet
| Cost or comparison item | What to record |
|---|---|
| Identity | Exact model number, size or capacity, finish and condition |
| Checkout | Sale price, delivery, installation, haul-away, required parts and tax |
| Adjustments | Discounts and confirmed rebates for which you and the exact model qualify |
| Use | EnergyGuide annual estimate, local utility rate and expected household use |
| Ownership | Expected repairs or maintenance and the years you expect to keep the appliance |
| Terms | Warranty, return window, delivery timing and service differences |
Fill out one worksheet for each seller and model. Ask the seller to confirm fees, included work and return terms in writing before you pay.
Calculate the price you will really pay
The relevant number is the net delivered and installed price, not the large figure crossed out on a shelf tag.
Use this calculation
Net purchase cost = item price + delivery + installation + haul-away + required parts or accessories + tax − discounts − confirmed eligible rebates.

Delivery may be free to a local address but cost extra outside a service area. Installation can exclude plumbing, electrical work, venting, a shutoff valve, a stacking kit or other parts needed for your setup. Haul-away may be a separate fee or unavailable for some categories. If a charge is required to make the appliance usable, treat it as part of the purchase cost.
Illustrative arithmetic
The following is a calculation example, not a current market quote. Suppose Offer A lists an appliance at $850, charges $79 delivery and $120 installation, and requires a $35 connection kit. A confirmed $50 rebate applies. Its net purchase cost before tax is $1,034 ($850 + $79 + $120 + $35 − $50). Offer B for the identical model is $900 with free delivery, $80 installation and no required kit or rebate, producing $980 before tax. Offer B has the lower real price even though its advertised item price is higher.
If an incentive is merely advertised as available, leave it out until the utility, seller or program administrator confirms that your location, purchase date, model and paperwork meet the conditions. Never count a rebate that requires a product category, efficiency rating or customer status you have not verified.

Do not overlook tax and payment terms
Record sales tax or other mandatory government charges in the same worksheet. If a seller offers financing, compare the total amount paid, not just the monthly payment. Deferred-interest terms, required deposits or fees can change the cost even when the appliance price is unchanged. Use the cash-equivalent total when comparing sellers, and keep financing terms as a separate decision.

Include energy, water and maintenance costs
The FTC says ownership cost includes the purchase price, repairs and maintenance, and operating expenses. An appliance with the lowest checkout total can cost more over time if it uses substantially more electricity or water, requires specialized maintenance or has less favorable service coverage.
Read the EnergyGuide label correctly
For covered products, the yellow EnergyGuide label reports energy use and an estimated annual operating cost. The FTC explains that the estimate assumes typical use and a national average energy price. Your bill depends on local utility rates, climate, household habits, load size and settings, so treat the printed dollar amount as a comparison estimate rather than a promise.
Compare the kWh or other consumption figure among similar models first. Then use your utility’s current rate and realistic usage to judge what the difference could mean in your home. For water-using appliances, compare the labeled water-use information where available and consider local water and sewer charges.
Avoid false precision
The FTC consumer guide gives a historical illustrative refrigerator example of roughly 600 to more than 800 kWh per year and about $50 to $70 in annual operating cost under the guide’s national-average assumptions. Those figures are examples from that guide, not current estimates or a general market benchmark. Use the label on the exact model you are considering instead.

Choose an ownership period that reflects your plans, such as the number of years you expect to live in the home or keep the appliance. A simple comparison is:
Rank #3
- Large Capacity, 21 Cu. Ft.
- Factory Installed Automatic Ice Maker
- ENERGY STAR Qualified
Estimated ownership cost = net purchase cost + (annual energy and water cost × years) + expected maintenance and repairs.
Use a range for repairs when you cannot predict them, and show the assumptions. If a more efficient model costs $200 extra but your calculated energy and water savings are only $10 per year, the premium would take about 20 years to recover before maintenance differences. That payback is arithmetic based on your inputs, not a guaranteed saving; a change in utility rates or usage changes the result.
Check rebates and incentives before counting them
Rebates can materially change a comparison, but eligibility is usually conditional. Ask the utility or seller for the current rules and use the ENERGY STAR rebate finder to look for location-specific offers. Listings change, and a program may limit the model, efficiency tier, income qualification, service territory, purchase date, quantity or application deadline.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm that the exact model number appears on the eligible-product list.
- Check whether the incentive is an instant discount, a mail-in or online claim, or a tax-related benefit.
- Record required documents such as an invoice, proof of installation, recycling receipt or old-unit serial number.
- Note the submission deadline and whether funds are limited.
- Do not subtract the amount until the administrator confirms that you qualify.
Keep copies of the invoice, model label, delivery record and submitted claim. If a seller promises to file paperwork for you, obtain the promise and the expected timing in writing.
Make sure the discounted appliance fits your home and routine
Measure the opening, not just the appliance box
Measure width, height and depth at the actual opening, including baseboards, counters, trim and nearby walls. Check the path from the delivery vehicle to the final location: doors, hallways, stairs, elevators and turns can be narrower than the opening. Add the clearance specified by the manufacturer for ventilation, door swing, drawers and service access. For built-in or under-counter products, verify the required cutout dimensions rather than relying on nominal labels such as 24 inches or 30 inches.
Match capacity to real use
Choose capacity based on household size, cooking or laundry patterns and how often you run full loads. Oversizing can waste purchase money and, in some categories, energy. ENERGY STAR refrigerator guidance notes that larger refrigerators generally use more energy and that size and freezer configuration affect efficiency. Do not choose a larger or more complex model solely because its sale percentage is higher.

Separate useful features from expensive extras
List the features you will actually use, such as a specific wash cycle, adjustable shelving, humidity control or a required smart-home connection. Price the accessories and consumables needed to operate them. A feature that requires proprietary filters, a subscription or a specialized installation can raise ownership cost; include those recurring charges in your worksheet if they apply.
Compare delivery, installation and service—not just price
Consumer Reports’ appliance-store buying guidance, updated January 19, 2023, identifies price, service, delivery, installation and other fees as comparison factors. Two sellers can list the same model at the same price while providing very different transaction value.
Questions to ask before ordering
- What is the earliest confirmed delivery date, and is the date a window or a guarantee?
- Does delivery include threshold, room-of-choice or stairs service?
- Who performs installation, and exactly what work and parts are included?
- Will the installer test the appliance and remove packaging?
- Is old-unit haul-away included, and must the old appliance be disconnected first?
- What happens if the appliance arrives damaged, does not fit or is missing a part?
- How long is the return period, and who pays return or restocking charges?
- Which party handles a warranty claim, and is labor covered?
Get answers on the order confirmation or invoice. A verbal assurance that disappears at checkout is not a reliable part of the deal.
Account for timing and inconvenience
A lower price may not be worthwhile if the delivery date leaves you without a working refrigerator, washer or water heater for an extended period. Conversely, paying more for a faster, confirmed delivery can be rational when replacement is urgent. Record the practical cost of waiting, temporary equipment, missed work for installation or a second delivery visit.
Know which products carry an EnergyGuide label
The FTC Energy Labeling Rule covers categories including refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers, dishwashers, water heaters, air conditioners, furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, pool heaters and televisions. Confirm that the exact category and model has a label; do not assume every appliance or every configuration does.
When a label is present, compare similar products using the same assumptions. A refrigerator should be compared with refrigerators of similar capacity and configuration, and a clothes washer with models of comparable load size and cycle design. Comparing a compact unit with a full-size unit can make the energy figures look favorable while ignoring the different amount of work each appliance performs.
Use a repeatable decision process
- Define the need. Write down the space limits, capacity, connection requirements and must-have features.
- Shortlist qualifying models. Exclude anything that fails the measurements, configuration or warranty requirements.
- Capture exact identities. Record the complete model number and condition for every listing.
- Collect complete quotes. Ask each seller for item price, delivery, installation, haul-away, required parts, tax and return terms.
- Verify adjustments. Apply only discounts and rebates confirmed for your location, date and model.
- Calculate net purchase cost. Use the same formula for every seller.
- Estimate operating cost. Read the EnergyGuide label where applicable and adjust your expectations for local rates and use.
- Add ownership factors. Consider maintenance, repair exposure, warranty labor, service access and expected years of use.
- Check the payback. Determine whether any extra price for efficiency or service is likely to recover during your ownership period.
- Document the order. Save the written quote, model number, delivery promise, installation scope and rebate instructions.
Red flags that make a sale look better than it is
- Percentage without a comparable reference: A 40% markdown can be meaningless if the reference price is for a different configuration or was not a price you would have paid.
- Model number hidden: Refusal to provide the complete identifier prevents a reliable comparison.
- Required services revealed late: A low item price followed by mandatory delivery, installation or parts can erase the apparent saving.
- Rebate treated as guaranteed: A promotional banner is not proof that your address, model or purchase date qualifies.
- Open-box condition omitted: Missing accessories, cosmetic damage or reduced coverage can change the value.
- Energy claim without a label: General statements such as efficient or eco-friendly are not a substitute for the product’s consumption information.
- Unclear return or damage policy: The financial risk is higher when you cannot return a unit that arrives damaged or does not fit.
- Urgency pressure: A countdown timer or limited-stock message should not replace measurement and cost checks.
A practical final checklist
- Exact model and configuration match across the offers.
- Capacity, finish, condition and included components are recorded.
- Opening, ventilation, door-swing and delivery-path measurements are confirmed.
- Item price, delivery, installation, haul-away, required parts and tax are included.
- Only verified discounts and eligible rebates are subtracted.
- EnergyGuide consumption and estimated annual cost are recorded where applicable.
- Local utility rates and expected use are considered.
- Warranty, service, return and damage terms are in writing.
- Expected maintenance, repair exposure and ownership years are included.
- The net total and likely ownership cost beat the alternatives that meet the same need.
If the appliance passes every check, the sale is a good deal because the complete value works for your household—not because the advertising shows the biggest markdown.
