A “percent off” label alone cannot show whether a deal is unusually good: the reference price may not reflect a price regularly offered for a substantial period, and the checkout price may depend on eligibility or other conditions.
1. Make sure you are comparing the same Apple product
Before comparing prices, match the product’s generation and full configuration. For a Mac, that can mean chip, memory, storage and screen size; for an iPad or iPhone, check storage, screen size and connectivity. Also compare condition—new versus refurbished, for example—and what is included. A lower price for a different configuration or condition is not a like-for-like discount.

2. Test the reference price, not just the advertised saving
Start with Apple’s current listed price for the identical item, then compare the offer with prices at other sellers. Apple says its products are sold through Apple and authorized resellers; its US store pages can help establish a baseline, but availability and prices change. Check Apple’s current store and offers, and verify the precise configuration and terms at checkout.

A crossed-out price or “save” percentage is only as useful as the price behind it. In former-price guidance reproduced in a 1964 Federal Trade Commission decision volume, the FTC said: “If the former price is the actual, bona fide price at which the article was offered to the public on a regular basis for a reasonably substantial period of time, it provides a legitimate basis for the advertising of a price comparison.” That is historical FTC guidance, not a newly issued rule. The practical point is to look for evidence that the reference price was a genuine, regularly offered price—not merely a number chosen to make the current price look lower.

Where a reliable price-history record is available, use it to see whether the offer is low relative to that product’s recent prices. The sources here do not establish a current best price, a typical Apple discount, or a universal threshold for what counts as a good deal. Judge the specific model and offer rather than relying on a fixed percentage.
3. Compare the real checkout price and deal conditions
FTC consumer advice recommends comparing sources and reading advertised-deal terms. FTC advertising guidance also covers price comparisons. For each offer, calculate what you can actually pay and receive; separate generally available prices from conditional ones.

- Required costs: Include shipping and mandatory fees in the comparison.
- Trade-in and financing: Check whether the advertised price depends on a trade-in or financing terms, and account for any cost or condition attached. The available sources do not establish a current Apple trade-in or financing promotion.
- Gift cards: If part of the value comes as a gift card, check redemption limits and whether you would use it. It is not the same as an immediate reduction in the amount charged.
- Seller terms: Check return and warranty terms, stock, and any conditions attached to the advertised offer.
4. Check what happens if the price drops after you buy
Some sellers may offer price matching or a credit if a price changes after purchase, but policies differ. The FTC advises shoppers to look for these terms rather than assume they apply. Read the FTC’s consumer shopping guidance and the seller’s own policy before relying on a future adjustment.

5. Use a like-for-like offer comparison
Write down the details before choosing between two listings. If a value is not clear, confirm it with the seller rather than treating the offers as equivalent.

A deal is more convincing when the exact item is clearly identified, the checkout price is competitive against credible alternatives and recent prices, and the offer does not rely on a misleading comparison or conditions you cannot use. Without a named model and configuration, no particular Apple deal can be judged. Retail prices, stock, configurations and promotions change frequently, so verify the offer and eligibility at checkout. The cited Apple terms and Education Store information are for the US; other regions may have different prices and policies.
