If chatbot conversations repeatedly leave you more distressed, isolated, dependent, or pushed toward risky choices, treat that change as a reason to pause and talk with a person—not as proof that the chatbot caused a mental health condition. A chatbot can sound warm or confident while being inaccurate, missing context, or reinforcing a perspective that needs careful human attention.
What changes should you watch for?
Look at the effects on your feelings and daily life over time, not only whether one answer felt comforting. These are prompts to pause and check in, not a scored test or diagnostic criteria. Changes can have more than one explanation, and a qualified professional can assess the broader context.

Your mood or behavior shifts after chats
Notice whether conversations leave you distressed, agitated, fearful, or otherwise feeling worse—and whether that effect persists after you close the chat. Also pay attention to changes in what you do, not just how you feel in the moment.

Your everyday life is getting smaller
Take note if chatting regularly displaces sleep, hobbies, school, work, or time with other people. The American Psychological Association (APA) advises that AI use should not interfere with these parts of life.

The chatbot is replacing people or professional care
It may be time to reassess if you increasingly rely on a chatbot as your main emotional support, or treat it as a friend, romantic partner, licensed professional, or substitute for human relationships. The APA advises against these roles: a chatbot is not a qualified mental health provider, and it cannot replace psychotherapy or a clinician’s assessment.
You are caught in reassurance or validation loops
Repeatedly asking the chatbot to confirm that you are safe, right, or free of a problem can become an unhelpful pattern, especially if the answers bring only brief relief before you need to ask again. APA professional guidance identifies reassurance- or validation-seeking as a pattern warranting attention in relevant users; it is not, by itself, a diagnosis.
Rank #2
The bot reinforces risky behavior or beliefs
Pay attention if responses encourage or validate self-harm, substance misuse, disordered eating, aggression, or beliefs that are frightening and not shared by people around you. Professional guidance identifies these as examples of unsafe interaction patterns. Do not treat a bot’s agreement as evidence that a risky action or belief is sound.

Do not keep asking a chatbot to assess a crisis if you may harm yourself or someone else, have urges to self-harm, are hearing or seeing things others do not, or have strong distressing beliefs others do not share. Contact a person who can help you in real time.

In the United States, the APA guide lists calling or texting 988, calling 911, or going to the nearest emergency department. If you are elsewhere, contact your local emergency service or crisis line; 988 is not a universal service. If there is immediate danger, use your local emergency route.
What to do if chatbot use seems to be making things worse
- Pause or reduce use. If conversations repeatedly leave you more distressed, dependent, isolated, or drawn toward risky behavior, take a break or set limits rather than seeking more reassurance from the same chatbot.
- Note what changed and when. Write down relevant shifts in mood, sleep, daily functioning, relationships, and the kinds of responses that seemed to affect you. This can help you explain the pattern; it is not a validated self-assessment.
- Tell a licensed mental health professional or health care team. Be direct about how and why you use the chatbot and what has changed. The APA recommends being honest with clinicians about AI use so they can relate it to your treatment goals.
- Keep clinical decisions with a qualified professional. Do not use chatbot output to diagnose yourself, interpret psychological tests, decide on treatment, or judge whether a crisis is serious. The APA says AI is not an accurate way to diagnose mental health conditions or a safe, effective replacement for licensed professional care.
What a chatbot can—and cannot—tell you
A general-purpose chatbot can produce a plausible-sounding answer without understanding your full history or reliably assessing risk. Its warmth or certainty does not establish that it is correct. The APA’s guidance addresses general-purpose generative AI chatbots and wellness applications; it distinguishes them from regulated digital therapeutics, traditional telehealth, provider administrative tools, clinical decision support, and wearables.

There is no validated self-assessment in the cited professional guidance that can determine whether a chatbot caused a particular person’s mental health to worsen. Nor does that guidance establish how often chatbot-related worsening occurs. It describes risks and the need for monitoring, not a way to diagnose a person from a checklist. WHO’s 20 March 2026 update underscored the safety stakes: Dr Alain Labrique, Director of WHO’s Department of Data, Digital Health, Analytics and AI, said, “As AI increasingly interacts with people in moments of emotional vulnerability, we as WHO and its stakeholders must ensure these systems are designed and governed with safety, accountability and human well-being at their core.”
