How to Tell Whether a Zelda amiibo Is Compatible With Your Game

There is no universal Zelda amiibo compatibility rule. The same figure can perform different functions in different games, and some games require you to unlock an amiibo feature before scanning. Check the official instructions for the exact game, confirm the figure-specific reward, and verify the game’s scan limit. You can play an amiibo-compatible game without owning an amiibo.

The rule that prevents most compatibility mistakes

Nintendo’s official amiibo FAQ says that each amiibo can work with compatible games in distinct ways. A Zelda character name on the base does not guarantee the same reward, or even the same type of function, in every Zelda release. A figure might produce randomized materials in one game, an outfit variant in another, or a special companion or equipment item in a particular title.

Use the game—not the character—as your starting point. Nintendo also states that amiibo-compatible games remain playable without an amiibo figure, so an amiibo is an optional extra rather than a requirement for the main game.

For a definitive answer, use the game’s current Nintendo support page or its in-game amiibo instructions. Nintendo’s general guidance is available in Answers to Top amiibo Questions.

A five-step compatibility check

  1. Identify the exact game and edition. Write down the title you will scan in, rather than searching only for “Zelda amiibo.” Compatibility and rewards are specified per game. If you are using a different release from Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, or Echoes of Wisdom, do not assume that one of those games’ rules applies.
  2. Open the game’s official Nintendo instructions. Look for an amiibo support page or the amiibo section in the game’s manual or help menu. Nintendo’s general FAQ warns that one figure can have different functions in different compatible games.
  3. Confirm the feature unlock. Some games ignore scans until you enable their amiibo function. Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom require the amiibo rune to be unlocked. Echoes of Wisdom requires its amiibo feature to be unlocked, normally about one hour into the game.
  4. Read the stated result for the exact figure. Check whether the game promises a random item pool, a themed outfit, equipment, a companion, or another game-specific effect. If you want one particular reward, confirm that the page names your exact figure rather than merely mentioning the Zelda series.
  5. Check limits and software requirements. Daily limits are set by the game and can be tied to your Nintendo Account. Nintendo also notes on amiibo product information that a software update may be required, so install the game’s current update and reread the support page if a scan fails.

How Zelda amiibo work in the three documented games

The following examples show why checking the exact game matters. They are not a complete compatibility matrix for every Zelda release.

Game What must be unlocked Scan allowance Documented kinds of rewards or effects
Breath of the Wild Unlock the amiibo rune; enable amiibo in Options; select the amiibo ability. Once per figure per day per Nintendo Account. Random items such as fish, plants, or a treasure chest; Wolf Link can be summoned as assistance.
Tears of the Kingdom Unlock the amiibo rune before scanning. Once per figure per day per Nintendo Account. A unique reward may take more than one scan. Materials, weapons, and themed paraglider fabric; the exact result depends on the figure.
Echoes of Wisdom Unlock the amiibo feature, usually about one hour into the game. Once per figure per day per Nintendo Account, with up to three figures per day. Smoothie ingredients, variant outfits, and other game-specific items; a unique reward may require more than one scan.

Breath of the Wild: enabling and interpreting a scan

Unlock and enable the amiibo rune

Nintendo’s Breath of the Wild amiibo instructions specify this sequence:

  1. Unlock the amiibo rune.
  2. Open Options and enable amiibo.
  3. Select the amiibo ability.
  4. Scan the figure at the right control stick when prompted.

If the ability is missing, the game has not reached the required unlock state or amiibo has not been enabled in Options. Fix that before replacing the figure.

What the game can give you

Breath of the Wild uses amiibo for game-world extras rather than a universal Zelda-series unlock. Nintendo documents random item drops such as fish and plants and treasure chests for Zelda and 30th Anniversary series figures. The result is not guaranteed to be the same every time.

Wolf Link is a special case: the compatible Wolf Link figure can summon Wolf Link to help in the game. That companion function is specific to the documented Breath of the Wild behavior; it should not be generalized to every Zelda figure or every Zelda title. Nintendo’s dedicated overview is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – amiibo.

Daily rule

The support instructions allow each figure to be scanned once per day per Nintendo Account. If you scan a figure and receive an ordinary item, the daily allowance has still been used; scanning again immediately will not bypass the limit.

Tears of the Kingdom: checking a figure and its special reward

Unlock the amiibo rune first

The Tears of the Kingdom support instructions require the amiibo rune to be unlocked before a figure can be used. If the scan option is unavailable, progress far enough to obtain that rune and then try again.

Typical Zelda-series results

Nintendo describes Zelda-series scans as a source of useful materials and weapons and says they may also provide themed paraglider fabric. These are game-specific rewards, not a promise that every Zelda figure grants every item.

For a figure-specific example, Nintendo’s Link (Tears of the Kingdom) amiibo page lists weapons, materials, and special paraglider fabric as possible rewards from that named figure. Use the exact model name when you are shopping or comparing figures; “Link” alone can refer to multiple amiibo with different game behavior.

Daily allowance and delayed rewards

Tears of the Kingdom permits one use per figure per day per Nintendo Account. Nintendo notes that a unique reward can require more than one scan, so a first scan that produces ordinary materials does not prove that the figure is incompatible. Wait for the next permitted scan and follow the game’s instructions.

Echoes of Wisdom: an unlock, a three-figure cap, and outfit variants

Reach the amiibo feature

Nintendo’s Echoes of Wisdom amiibo instructions say that the amiibo feature must be unlocked, usually about one hour into gameplay. Before that point, a correctly functioning figure can appear not to work simply because the feature is unavailable.

What scans provide

Scanning The Legend of Zelda series amiibo can provide items such as smoothie ingredients or variant outfits. The game may also reserve a unique reward for a later scan, so do not treat a randomized or ordinary first result as a compatibility verdict.

Two separate limits

Echoes of Wisdom sets one scan per amiibo figure per day per Nintendo Account and allows up to three amiibo figures per day. The three-figure cap is separate from the per-figure rule: scanning three different figures can use the day’s allowance, while scanning one of those same figures again is still blocked until the next permitted day.

How to tell whether a reward is figure-specific or random

Read the wording on the game’s support page and the exact product page. “Zelda-series amiibo can provide materials” describes a category of possible results; it does not identify one guaranteed item. A page that names a particular figure and lists a particular reward is stronger evidence for that figure than a general series statement.

  • Random pool: The game selects from several items, such as fish, plants, materials, or weapons. Receiving one item instead of another is expected behavior.
  • Figure-specific reward: The instructions or product page associates a named outfit, fabric, weapon, companion, or other bonus with a named figure.
  • Delayed unique reward: The game may require more than one permitted scan before the special result appears. This is a timing rule, not evidence that the figure failed.
  • Game-specific function: A figure can perform a distinctive action in one title, such as summoning Wolf Link in Breath of the Wild, without providing that action elsewhere.

A practical decision tree before you scan

  1. Is the game listed by Nintendo as amiibo-compatible? If the title’s official instructions do not mention amiibo, do not infer support from the fact that another Zelda game recognizes the figure.
  2. Has the in-game feature been unlocked? Locate the amiibo rune or feature in the game’s progression. In Echoes of Wisdom, the support page places the unlock at roughly one hour, while the two open-world examples require their amiibo runes.
  3. Does the page name your model? Distinguish a named figure from a broad “Zelda series” description. Several figures may depict the same character, and the model name is the reliable way to compare them.
  4. Is the listed result acceptable even if it is random? If you need a guaranteed outfit or fabric, a general materials pool may not meet your goal. If you enjoy surprise drops, the same pool may be worthwhile.
  5. Can you wait for a later scan? A delayed unique reward and a daily account limit mean that one scan may not reveal everything the page describes.

This sequence separates three issues that are often confused: recognition of the figure, availability of the amiibo feature, and receipt of a particular reward. A successful scan proves only that the current game accepted the figure; it does not guarantee every possible bonus.

Understanding the account-based limits

The cited Nintendo instructions describe limits in terms of a Nintendo Account, not simply the physical figure or the console. That wording matters when several people use the same system or save environment. Keep the account named on the support page in mind when diagnosing a message that says a figure has already been used.

There are also two different kinds of limit. A per-figure limit controls how often one specific model can be scanned. A total daily cap controls how many different figures can be used in a title such as Echoes of Wisdom. Do not assume that scanning a different figure resets the first figure’s allowance, and do not assume that restarting software resets either limit.

Because unique rewards can require multiple scans, write down the date and figure if you are testing several models. This simple record helps distinguish a random result from a scan that was refused because its daily allowance had already been consumed.

Comparing two Zelda amiibo before you buy

Compare figures in this order so that a desirable character does not distract you from compatibility.

Question Why it matters What to verify
Which exact game will you use? The same figure can behave differently across games. The game’s current Nintendo support page and in-game amiibo instructions.
Is the feature unlocked? A locked rune or feature prevents scanning even with a compatible figure. Rune or feature name and the point in the story when it becomes available.
What kind of result do you want? Random materials are different from a named outfit, fabric, weapon, or companion. Whether the reward is a pool of possibilities or tied to the exact figure.
How often can you scan? A daily limit can delay a multi-scan reward. Per-figure and total-per-day rules, including Nintendo Account language.
Is the benefit worth the purchase? Amiibo is optional, and stock and prices change. Current price, availability, and authenticity at the time you purchase.

Nintendo’s amiibo Character List Lineup can help identify the official figure name. Use that exact name when matching it to a game’s reward list. Availability and pricing are not fixed product specifications, so verify them from the retailer or Nintendo listing you are considering.

Cost and availability are part of compatibility value

A figure can be technically compatible and still be a poor purchase for your use case. Compare its current price with the value of the specific reward you want, and check whether the listing is available from a seller you trust. Nintendo’s lineup identifies named products, but stock, regional listings, dates, and retailer prices can change. Do not treat an old product page or an unusually cheap listing as proof of authenticity.

If you are buying for Tears of the Kingdom, search by the complete model name, such as “Link (Tears of the Kingdom) amiibo,” rather than a generic “Link amiibo” query. That reduces the chance of selecting a different Link figure whose documented behavior is not the one you wanted. If the reward is only a random pool of materials, decide whether that convenience justifies the purchase instead of assuming the figure is required.

Troubleshooting a scan that does not work

The game offers no amiibo option

  • Check that you have unlocked the amiibo rune or feature required by the game.
  • In Breath of the Wild, confirm that amiibo is enabled in Options and that the amiibo ability is selected.
  • Check the game’s current Nintendo support page for a software-update requirement.

The figure scans but gives an unexpected item

  • Re-read the reward description for the exact game and figure. A character name does not guarantee a particular drop.
  • Determine whether the result is randomized. Fish, plants, materials, weapons, and treasure chests can be ordinary outcomes.
  • If the page says a unique reward may take more than one scan, use the next permitted daily scan rather than assuming failure.

The figure worked yesterday but not today

Check the game’s allowance and the Nintendo Account associated with the save. Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom use one scan per figure per day per Nintendo Account; Echoes of Wisdom adds a three-figure daily cap. A figure already used that day will not necessarily scan again just because the console or game was restarted.

You expected a reward from another Zelda game

Do not transfer assumptions between titles. A reward documented for Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, or Echoes of Wisdom is evidence for that game only unless another game’s official instructions say otherwise.

What is and is not known for other Zelda games

The rules above cover the three Nintendo support pages cited here. They do not form a complete, current list of every amiibo against every Zelda release, platform, region, and reward. For any other game, consult that title’s official instructions and check its software version. If Nintendo does not list a figure or function for your game, treat compatibility as unconfirmed rather than inferring it from the character, the packaging, or a different game’s result.

Do you need to own an amiibo?

No. Nintendo’s amiibo FAQ explicitly says that all amiibo-compatible games can still be played without an amiibo figure. Buy one when its particular reward, collection value, or in-game convenience justifies the cost and availability for you—not because the game requires it.

When a reward is your reason for buying, choose the exact named model, confirm the game-specific page, and account for daily limits and any requirement for multiple scans. That process is more reliable than choosing a figure solely because it depicts a favorite Zelda character.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will any Zelda amiibo work with Tears of the Kingdom?

Do not assume that every figure has the same function. Unlock the amiibo rune, then check Nintendo’s Tears of the Kingdom instructions for the exact model and its listed reward. Zelda-series figures can provide materials, weapons, and themed paraglider fabric, but the result depends on the figure.

Can I use a Zelda amiibo in Breath of the Wild?

Compatible Zelda and 30th Anniversary figures can provide random items, while Wolf Link has a special assistance function. Unlock and enable the amiibo rune, select the ability, and scan at the right control stick. Each figure can be used once per day per Nintendo Account.

What does the Link (Tears of the Kingdom) amiibo unlock?

Nintendo lists weapons, materials, and special paraglider fabric as possible Tears of the Kingdom rewards for that named figure. A unique reward may take more than one permitted daily scan.

When can I scan an amiibo in Echoes of Wisdom?

First unlock the game’s amiibo feature, usually about one hour into gameplay. The limit is one scan per figure per day per Nintendo Account and up to three amiibo figures per day.

Why did my first scan give ordinary items instead of the special reward?

Some rewards are randomized, and Nintendo notes that a unique reward may require more than one scan. Follow the game’s daily allowance and try again on a later permitted scan.

Do I need an amiibo to finish an amiibo-compatible game?

No. Nintendo says amiibo-compatible games can be played without an amiibo figure. Treat the figure as an optional reward, convenience, or collectible.

Can I use the same figure more than once in a day?

The documented rules for Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, and Echoes of Wisdom allow one scan per figure per day per Nintendo Account. Echoes of Wisdom also limits the total to three figures per day.

Is a cheap listing proof that a Zelda amiibo is compatible?

No. Compatibility comes from the game’s official instructions, while price, stock, seller quality, and authenticity must be checked separately at purchase. Match the complete official figure name to the game’s reward page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Zelda amiibo compatibility is determined by the exact game, feature-unlock state, named figure, reward type, and scan limit—not by the character alone. Check Nintendo’s current instructions, update the software when required, and buy only when the specific bonus or collectible value is worth the current price.
