There is no single visual giveaway that reliably proves a wildlife photo was made or changed with AI. The most defensible approach combines source tracing, the original file, provenance records, careful inspection of biological details, and independent corroboration. A missing metadata record, an odd-looking feather, or a detector result can justify more checking, but none is proof on its own.
This matters because a convincing image can contain invented plumage, a changed bill, removed diagnostic markings, or a fabricated background while still looking like an ordinary photograph. Your goal is not to guess from pixels; it is to reach a supportable conclusion such as verified provenance, unverified, or likely materially altered.

What you can—and cannot—establish
Separate three questions that are often confused:
- Was the file generated or edited? Provenance records, the photographer’s original file, and an editing history can provide evidence.
- Is the depicted animal, place, or event real? A provenance record does not answer this. Content Credentials can document how a file was created or transformed, but Google Photos Help explicitly says they do not tell viewers whether a photo or video is real or fake.
- Does the image faithfully represent what was documented? This depends on the use. A crop or exposure correction may be acceptable in an archive, while changing a bird’s bill or replacing a sky may invalidate a scientific record or contest entry.
Do not report a binary verdict when the evidence only supports uncertainty. “The original file and chain of custody were not available” is more accurate than “AI-generated.”
Start with provenance, not visual suspicion
Find the earliest available version
Record the post’s caption, photographer credit, claimed species, location, date, and event. Search distinctive wording and compare versions that appeared earlier. Check whether the account posting the image has a credible connection to the named photographer, publication, reserve, research project, or event. A post with no reliable source is harder to verify, but lack of attribution alone does not prove AI use.

Ask for the original when the claim matters
Social platforms commonly redistribute a smaller, recompressed copy. That copy may have lost camera metadata, editing history, or pixels needed to inspect a species-level feature. For a rare-species record, scientific submission, competition entry, or consequential news story, request the original camera file or RAW capture and ask what edits were made. Audubon’s 2026 Photography Awards rules state that entrants may be required to provide original image files within the specified timeframe.
Check the chain of custody
Write down where each copy came from and what changed between copies. A file downloaded from an unknown account is weaker evidence than a file supplied directly by the credited photographer, accompanied by a contemporaneous caption and an editing disclosure. Preserve the versions you examined; a later post can be silently replaced.
Understand Content Credentials and other provenance signals
Content Credentials are signed, tamper-evident provenance records specified by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA). A compatible viewer or verifier may show the creator, software, and transformations recorded for a file. C2PA also describes locating an associated manifest through a fingerprint when the manifest is stored separately.

- Which participating application or device created the file.
- Which recorded transformations occurred after capture, such as cropping or export.
- Whether the signed record was altered after it was issued.
Treat those statements as claims about the file’s documented history, not as a truth certificate about the scene. A valid credential can accompany a staged photograph, a misleading caption, or a real photograph whose subject was materially changed outside the recorded chain.
Why a missing credential proves little
The camera or editor may not support C2PA, a platform may strip metadata, or a later export may omit the manifest. A missing record therefore means “no supported provenance was found,” not “AI was used.” Even when a credential exists, it may cover only part of the file’s history.

Interpret an AI checker narrowly
OpenAI’s content-provenance check looks for supported OpenAI signals. It is not a general detector for every image-generation system, and a result such as “not detected” does not mean an image was not generated or edited with another tool. Do not turn a tool’s limited signal check into a universal authenticity verdict.
A repeatable verification workflow
- Capture the claim. Save the post or page, caption, account name, publication date, claimed species, location, and event. Note what the image is being used to prove.
- Trace earlier versions. Search the caption, credit, and distinctive visual description. Compare the earliest credible copy with later versions for changed markings, backgrounds, crops, or captions.
- Contact the source. Ask the credited photographer or publisher for the original file, RAW capture where available, and a list of edits. Ask specifically whether generative fill, object removal, sky replacement, or AI enhancement was used.
- Inspect provenance. Open the file in a compatible Content Credentials viewer or verifier. Record the creator, software, transformations, and whether the manifest is valid. If no record appears, document that limitation without treating it as proof of manipulation.
- Inspect biological details. Examine the animal’s anatomy, markings, feather or fur pattern, eyes, toes, bill or beak, and contact with the perch or ground. Look at the animal’s outline, repeated textures, shadows, reflections, and the transition into the background.
- Check the scene. Compare lighting direction, focus, depth of field, weather, habitat, and the claimed location and date. Look for a subject whose scale, shadow, or reflection does not agree with its surroundings.
- Corroborate independently. Compare photographs from the same event, field notes, reputable species records, or another photographer’s account. A visual mismatch becomes stronger evidence when independent information also conflicts with the claim.
- Classify the result. Use a calibrated label: “verified provenance,” “consistent but unverified,” “specific unresolved concern,” or “likely materially altered.” Explain the evidence and its limits.
Zooming in can reveal a malformed edge, but it can also make JPEG compression, sharpening halos, and denoising look like synthetic artifacts. Treat every visual anomaly as a lead to investigate.
Visual clues worth checking
Anatomy and species characters
AI tools can create plausible-looking but biologically inconsistent anatomy. Compare the number and placement of toes, joint angles, wing attachment, eye position, bill or beak geometry, nostrils, and the relationship between the animal and its perch. For mammals, check limb proportions, paws, ears, whiskers, and the continuity of fur across joints. A single unusual feature is not decisive: injury, molt, age, sex, perspective, and motion blur can all produce genuine variation.
Feather, fur, and scale patterns
Look for repeated marks, mirrored textures, abrupt pattern changes, or a diagnostic stripe that stops unnaturally. A real bird may have overlapping feathers, molt gaps, wet plumage, or occlusion by vegetation. Synthetic detail often becomes suspicious when it is too uniformly sharp, repeats at different scales, or does not follow the body’s curvature.
Edges and occlusion
Inspect the outline around wings, whiskers, tails, and fine vegetation. Watch for halos, melted strands, cut-out edges, or foreground elements that should cover the animal but instead appear behind it. Compression can create similar halos, so compare an earlier, higher-quality copy before drawing a conclusion.

Light, shadow, and reflection
Check whether highlights on the animal agree with highlights on leaves, water, or rocks. Shadows should have a plausible direction, softness, and contact point. Reflections should preserve the subject’s orientation and major markings. A mismatch is evidence to follow up, not a stand-alone diagnosis; multiple light sources, flash, water movement, and long exposures can make genuine scenes complex.

Background and repeated objects
Scan for cloned leaves, duplicated branches, identical ripples, or textures that continue through the animal’s silhouette. Ask whether the depth of field and atmospheric haze are consistent between subject and habitat. Generative fill can produce a natural-looking background while changing the ecological context that gives a wildlife record meaning.
Behavior and physical contact
Check whether feet grip the perch, paws press into the substrate, or a beak actually meets the object it appears to touch. AI composites often miss the small occlusions and deformations caused by real contact. A bird’s posture may also conflict with the claimed behavior or species, but consult a qualified source before treating that as evidence.
“Altered” depends on the purpose of the image
There is no single worldwide editing rule. The relevant question is whether an edit preserves a truthful record for the intended use and is disclosed when it could change a viewer’s interpretation.
| Use or policy | Generally permitted examples | Disallowed or problematic examples | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| eBird and Macaulay Library AI Modification and Editing Policy, modified August 3, 2026 | Cropping, straightening, normal exposure and color adjustments, moderate sharpening and noise reduction, dust or lens-artifact removal, focus stacking, and HDR blending. | AI-generated images; generative fill or object changes to the animal, perch, or surroundings; sky or background replacement; AI enhancement that reconstructs or reinterprets detail. | Whether the media faithfully represents the organism, sound, or environment as documented. The policy emphasizes that archive media support scientific use. |
| Audubon 2026 Photography Awards | Normal processing, cropping, and minor adjustments that keep the subject accurate to the viewfinder. | Material additions, removals, alterations, and AI-generated images. | Contest entrants may be asked for original files within the stated deadline. |
| National Geographic wildlife-photography guidance | Corrections such as color adjustment can be acceptable when they do not misrepresent the scene. | Adding or cloning elements that were not present, or withholding material information about how the image was made. | Caption the backstory when the method is not obvious. Joel Sartore advises, “Tell them the backstory if there’s something about how the image was made that isn’t obvious just by viewing it.” |
These are policy examples, not a universal legal standard. An edit accepted for a personal print may be unacceptable for a biodiversity archive, scientific paper, contest, or news report.

Why wildlife images need extra caution
Small biological changes can alter a species identification or the apparent evidence for a behavior, range, or conservation claim. The eBird and Macaulay Library policy gives a modified Grasshopper Sparrow as an example: processing changed its bill and added a plumage mark. Such changes may look like “cleanup” to a general viewer while destroying diagnostic information.
Context can also be material even when the animal itself is untouched. National Geographic’s guidance uses the example of attracting a tiger shark with chum. Brian Skerry says, “If I’m taking a picture of a tiger shark and don’t disclose the use of chum to attract it, in the caption or when questioned, then I’m being dishonest.” The lesson is broader than AI: disclose methods that could change how viewers interpret the scene.
How to compare an original and a suspected version
Place both files at the same scale and compare these axes in order:
- Provenance: Which file appeared first, and is either supported by a signed record or direct source?
- Species-relevant detail: Do bill shape, toes, eye position, feather tracts, fur patterns, or other diagnostic features differ?
- Scene elements: Were the perch, sky, vegetation, water, or behavior changed?
- Physical consistency: Do edges, shadows, reflections, texture repetition, and contact points agree?
- Disclosure and corroboration: Does the caption explain the process, and do independent images or records support the claimed scene?
For a contest or scientific submission, compare the edit against that organization’s current policy as well as against the pixels. A technically identical image can be acceptable in one context and disqualifying in another.

“The detector says AI, so it is fake”
Detector outputs can be limited to particular signals, models, or file conditions. Report exactly what the tool checked and seek the original file and source history.
Best Value
“There is no metadata, so it was generated”
Metadata is routinely lost during export, resizing, and social-media upload. Treat its absence as an evidence gap.
“One strange feather proves manipulation”
Wild animals vary, and cameras produce blur, noise, sharpening, and occlusion. Require multiple independent inconsistencies or corroborating provenance evidence.
“Any edit is dishonest”
Normal exposure, color, cropping, dust removal, focus stacking, and HDR may be allowed by a relevant policy. Ask whether the edit changes biological or contextual meaning and whether it is disclosed.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
“A credential proves the scene is real”
Credentials document a file’s recorded history; they do not certify the animal, location, event, or caption. Keep those questions separate.
How to publish a responsible assessment
State the claim, the evidence you checked, and the unresolved limitations. For example:
- Verified provenance: “The photographer supplied the original file, the recorded edits are consistent with the stated workflow, and independent images support the location and date.”
- Unverified: “The image circulates without an accessible original or provenance record; no definitive conclusion about AI use is possible.”
- Specific concern: “The bill shape differs between versions and the source has not explained the change; the image should not be used as species evidence until resolved.”
- Likely materially altered: “The file history and side-by-side comparison show an added animal feature and replaced background, changes that conflict with the applicable archive or contest policy.”
Keep screenshots, filenames, hashes where appropriate, and correspondence so another editor or researcher can reproduce your assessment. Do not present a probability score as certainty, and do not accuse a photographer when the available evidence supports only “unverified.”
Quick Recap
What a careful viewer should remember
- Provenance is useful evidence, not a truth oracle.
- Missing metadata or an unsupported detector result is inconclusive.
- Visual inspection identifies questions for follow-up; it does not provide a validated accuracy rate for AI diagnosis.
- Wildlife-specific anatomy and markings deserve more weight than generic impressions of an image’s “smoothness.”
- Editing standards vary by archive, contest, science, journalism, and personal use.
- When the stakes are high, obtain the original file, ask for the editing history, compare independent records, and disclose uncertainty.
