Compare several clues together: molded copyright and country-of-origin marks, figure details, sticker artwork, consistency between parts and—if the figure is carded—the packaging. No single mark or color proves that a vintage Kenner R2-D2 is original. A 1977 stamp, for example, can appear on figures made later, and genuine factory variations exist.
Start with a careful, non-invasive inspection
Record what is present before trying to judge it. Photograph the whole figure and close-ups of its molded marks, sticker, dome, eye, leg paint, screws and seams. For a carded figure, photograph the front, back, bubble and seal as well. Note whether the figure is loose or still on its card.

Do not peel a sticker, open a card or take the figure apart just to make an initial assessment. Those actions can damage the item, and a visual comparison can reveal useful inconsistencies without them.
Read the molded marks as clues, not a date certificate
Look for the copyright or date mark and country-of-origin (COO) text. Compare their wording, placement and form with documented R2-D2 examples. The collector glossary explains that a 1977 copyright mark can remain on figures produced in later years; an R2-D2 variation reference also reports original examples with 1977 marks and rare 1978 marks. The date alone therefore does not establish when an individual figure was made or prove that it is original. Compare the whole figure with a documented factory variant
Kenner R2-D2 figures have documented factory and COO families, with legitimate differences in sculpt and molded details, dome and eye colors, leg color and sticker. A color that differs from another example is not, by itself, proof of a reproduction. Compare the candidate with an example from the same documented variant rather than relying on a broad claim that one shade or feature is always correct.
Use the figure as a set of related details:
- Molded marks: Compare the copyright/date and COO text, including their locations and forms.
- Figure details: Compare the sculpt, dome, eye and leg colors, plastic appearance, screws and other construction features.
- Sticker: Check the artwork, layout and colors against the relevant factory version.
- Part consistency: Ask whether the dome, body, legs and sticker plausibly belong to the same documented variant.
The R2-D2 variations guide documents multiple combinations and notes that components have been swapped. A figure that appears to combine features from incompatible variants deserves closer comparison, but it is not automatically a fake: parts may have been replaced, and photographs may not show enough detail to resolve a mismatch.

Inspect the sticker without trusting wear or yellowing
Compare the sticker’s artwork and details with the version associated with the figure’s factory variant. Reproduction stickers have circulated, including deliberately aged-looking versions, so a worn or yellowed appearance is not reliable proof of age. Conversely, an unusual sticker alone does not settle the figure’s status because stickers and other parts can be replaced. Use the sticker alongside the marks and figure details, not as a stand-alone test.

For a carded figure, assess the packaging separately
Packaging can add evidence, but it needs its own comparison. The R2-D2 reference recommends checking features such as hanger placement, bubble shape and edges, card color, sheen and finish, and printing details including fonts. Compare those features with a known original card from the same cardback type; a general resemblance is not enough.

Treat differences as warning signs for further investigation, not proof on their own. A carded example may require separate scrutiny of the figure, accessories, card, bubble and seal; the fact that the package looks convincing does not authenticate everything inside it.

Collector references provide qualitative comparison guidance, not a validated authentication test or a success rate for any one clue. They do not establish a universal feature that conclusively separates every original from every reproduction. A careful match across marks, factory-specific details, sticker and part consistency can support the conclusion that a figure is consistent with a vintage Kenner variant; it is not the same as proving authenticity.

- Skill level: Intermediate
For a valuable purchase or an unresolved mismatch, ask an experienced vintage Star Wars toy specialist to inspect the actual figure and any available provenance. The reviewed collector references do not identify a particular authentication service or guarantee. If comparing marketplace listings, judge the photographs of the specific item—especially its marks, sticker, parts and packaging—rather than treating a seller’s listing as authentication evidence.
