The fastest safe diagnosis is substitution: unplug the cable, inspect it and the port without probing, then test the device with a known-good cable and compatible charger. If the replacement works, the original cable is the likely failure. If several capable cables fail in the same port—especially with looseness, heat, corrosion, burning, or melting—the port or device needs professional service.
Test charging, data, and display output separately. USB-C cables and ports do not all support the same capabilities, so a failure in one function can be a compatibility mismatch rather than physical damage.

Start with this decision table
| What you observe | What it usually means | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| The cable is frayed, cut, bent, hot, discolored, or works only when moved | The cable is unsafe or has an intermittent internal connection | Stop using it and replace it; do not keep wiggling it to maintain a connection. |
| A known-good cable works in the same port | The original cable, its connector, or its supported capability is the problem | Retire the suspect cable and choose a replacement rated for the function you need. |
| Several known-good, compatible cables fail only in one port | The port, device connector, or internal hardware is suspect | Stop repeated testing and arrange manufacturer or authorized repair. |
| Charging works, but data transfer or display output does not | A capability mismatch, wrong port, hub/dock issue, or software problem is possible; damage is not proven | Verify the cable, port, device, adapter, and alternate-mode requirements one at a time. |
| Liquid, burning, melting, or corrosion is visible or a liquid warning persists | There is a risk of shorting and permanent contact damage | Disconnect, allow complete drying using the safe method below, and escalate visible damage to an authorized service provider. |
1. Stop using the connection and inspect it safely
Unplug before looking closely
Disconnect the cable from both ends and turn off or sleep the device if practical. Examine the cable jacket, strain relief, plugs, and the USB-C receptacle under good light. Look for cuts, exposed shielding, flattened sections, bent or recessed contacts, discoloration, melted plastic, a burnt smell, green or white corrosion, or a connector that feels unusually loose.
A cable can fail internally even when its outer jacket looks perfect. A connector that becomes hot, repeatedly disconnects, or charges only in one position is enough reason to retire it. Do not continue using a cable that shows heat or damage while you troubleshoot; an intermittent high-resistance connection can worsen the damage to the cable, charger, or port.

Do not probe the port
Do not insert a pin, paper clip, knife, cotton swab, or other object to scrape contacts or pull out debris. Mechanical probing can bend contacts, push contamination deeper, or short adjacent contacts. Do not spray liquid or contact cleaner into the receptacle.
Treat liquid warnings as a safety issue
If the device reports moisture or you can see liquid, disconnect the cable immediately and leave the port open to dry completely in a dry, ventilated place. Apple’s liquid-detection guidance specifically warns against heat, compressed air, rice, cotton swabs, paper towels, and other foreign objects. Charging a wet USB-C connector can corrode the pins and cause permanent loss of charging or connectivity.
Do not repeatedly reconnect the cable to “see whether it is dry.” If a liquid warning remains after the port has had time to dry naturally, or if you see corrosion, burning, or melted material, stop home testing and contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider.

2. Run the fastest cable-versus-port test
Use a known-good cable with the correct capability
Choose a cable that is known to work with a similar device and that supports the function you are testing. A cable that can charge a phone may not carry high-speed data or video. A data cable may not be rated for the power level required by a laptop. For a display test, the cable must support the relevant alternate mode as well as the source device, display, and adapter.
- Disconnect the suspect cable.
- Connect the known-good cable directly from the device to a compatible charger, computer, or display—omit hubs and docks for the first test.
- Repeat the same action that failed: start charging, copy a file, or establish the display connection.
- Observe whether the connection remains stable without holding the plug at an angle.
If the replacement works in the same port, the original cable is the leading suspect. Apple recommends this substitution approach for USB-C charging problems. Keep the failed cable out of service rather than using it for low-power tasks.
Cross-test the suspect cable
Use the suspect cable with another compatible device and charger. If it fails in more than one setup, the cable is very likely defective. If it works elsewhere but not with one device, check whether that device requires a different power, data-speed, or display capability before concluding that the cable is damaged.

Reverse the USB-C plug
USB-C is reversible, so disconnect the plug, rotate it 180 degrees, and repeat the test. Microsoft’s USB-C interoperability procedure includes reversing the cable and repeating connection checks. A connection that works in one orientation but not the other can indicate damaged or contaminated contacts, a marginal connector, or a device-side fault. Orientation-dependent behavior is not a reliable way to keep using the cable; replace the cable or seek service instead.

USB-C describes the connector shape, not a single guaranteed feature set. Separate tests prevent a capability mismatch from being mistaken for physical damage.
Charging
Connect the device directly to a compatible wall charger with the known-good cable. Confirm that the device recognizes the charger and that the battery percentage rises rather than merely displaying a connection icon. If charging is slow, verify that the charger supplies the required power and that the cable is rated for it. A phone, tablet, laptop, power bank, and monitor can all use USB-C while requiring different power profiles.
Try the same charger and cable with another compatible device if available. If the charger powers nothing, the charger or outlet may be the cause. If it powers other devices but not one port, the device or port becomes more suspect.
Data transfer
For a data test, connect directly to a computer, unlock the device if required, and look for the device to appear in the operating system. Try a small file transfer rather than relying only on a sound or notification. A cable can provide power while lacking the data wires or speed required by the device. Conversely, a port may support charging but not the data standard expected by a particular accessory.

Display and alternate modes
Video over USB-C uses an alternate mode that must be supported by the source port, the cable, and the display or adapter. Confirm the device’s port is a video-capable port; some USB-C-shaped ports are charging and data only. Test with a cable and display adapter specified for the required mode, connected directly. A charging-only result does not establish port damage.
4. Use movement and orientation symptoms correctly
Charging that changes when the cable moves
If charging starts or stops when the cable is wiggled, moved, or held at a particular angle, stop using that cable. Apple’s Mac troubleshooting guidance says to stop using a cable that charges only when moved and to have the cable and power supply evaluated. Movement dependence can come from a broken conductor, a damaged plug, contamination, or a worn receptacle; continued flexing can turn an intermittent fault into heat or permanent damage.
A plug that feels loose
Compare the fit with a known-good cable. A USB-C plug should seat fully and remain stable without force. If multiple cables feel loose in the same receptacle, the port’s retention or internal mounting may be damaged. Do not bend the plug or place pressure on it to improve contact.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Only one plug orientation works
Test the reversed orientation once, then stop if the result differs. One-sided operation points to a contact or connector problem, but it can also be caused by a cable or device whose contacts are marginal. The correct response is replacement or service, not leaving the plug in the “working” direction.
5. Isolate the charger, device, cable, and accessories
Change one item at a time so each result has a clear meaning. The following sequence avoids most false diagnoses:
- Use the original device with a known-good cable and the original charger.
- Keep the cable and device unchanged, but try a known-good compatible charger or outlet.
- Keep the charger and device unchanged, but try another known-good cable rated for the required function.
- Connect the suspect cable to another compatible device.
- Repeat charging, data, and display tests directly, without a hub or dock.
- Only after direct tests pass, reintroduce the hub, dock, adapter, or monitor and test that chain.
Interpret the pattern rather than a single failed attempt. A fault that follows the cable points to the cable. A fault that stays with one port across several capable cables points to the device or receptacle. A fault that appears only through a dock points to the dock, its power source, its firmware, or a capability mismatch.

6. Recognize capability mismatches that look like damage
Power capability
USB-C charging performance depends on the charger, cable, and device negotiating a compatible power level. A cable may fit physically while being unsuitable for a high-power laptop. The result can be no charging, slow charging, or a warning that the power source is insufficient. Test with the device maker’s recommended class of charger and a cable explicitly rated for that power requirement.

Data capability
Not every USB-C cable carries the same data rate. Some are intended mainly for charging, while others support USB data at one of several speeds. If the device charges but a computer cannot detect it, verify that the cable supports data, select the correct USB mode on the device when prompted, and try a direct connection.
Alternate-mode capability
Display output and other alternate modes require matching support throughout the chain. A port may be physically healthy while lacking video output, or an adapter may require a mode that the cable does not carry. Check the device documentation, port markings, cable specifications, and adapter requirements before treating a display-only failure as damage.
Unsupported device or wrong port
Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance emphasizes confirming that the connected device is supported and that the correct cable is being used. Some computers provide multiple USB-C ports with different roles. Try the documented port and remove adapters that are not needed for the test.

Immediate escalation signs
- Burning, melted plastic, visible corrosion, or a burnt smell.
- A receptacle that is physically loose, pushed inward, or detached from the chassis.
- Repeated liquid or debris warnings after complete natural drying.
- Visible arcing, smoke, unusual heat, or a cable that becomes hot at the plug.
- Several known-good cables fail in the same port.
Google Pixel Help directs owners to a warranty claim or authorized repair partner when a phone port appears burned, melted, or corroded. The same principle applies broadly: visible port damage is not a home-cleaning problem. Continued insertion can worsen the connector and may affect warranty coverage or safety.
What to tell the service provider
Record which cables, chargers, orientations, and functions failed. Note whether the problem follows the cable or remains with the port, whether liquid was involved, and whether the device displayed a warning. This short test history helps a technician avoid repeating unsafe experiments.

8. Choose a safe replacement cable
Match the replacement to the job instead of buying solely by connector shape. Confirm all of the following before purchase:
- The required charging power for the device and charger.
- Data support and the speed needed for storage, networking, or peripherals.
- Display or other alternate-mode support when applicable.
- Length and construction suitable for the installation, without forcing a tight bend at the plug.
- Clear labeling from a reputable manufacturer and, where relevant, USB Implementers Forum certification.
The USB-IF cable certification program states that certified cable assemblies are tested before using applicable certification logos. Certification does not make every cable suitable for every device, but it provides a way to distinguish tested assemblies from unlabeled products with uncertain capability claims.
After replacing a cable, retest charging, data, and display separately. Keep the old cable disconnected and marked for disposal if it was hot, damaged, or intermittent; do not return it to a drawer for occasional use.

9. Device-specific guidance
Mac laptops
For a Mac that charges only when a USB-C cable is wiggled or moved, Apple advises stopping use of that cable and having the cable and power supply evaluated. Test a different compatible cable and charger directly, then arrange service if the problem remains with the Mac’s port.
Pixel phones
If a Pixel port appears burned, melted, or corroded, Google Pixel Help recommends using its warranty or authorized-repair process. Do not scrape the port or continue charging to see whether the symptom clears.
Windows PCs and accessories
Microsoft’s troubleshooting approach is to verify device support, use the right cable, reverse the cable and repeat the connection test, and account for hubs, docks, insufficient power, and unsupported features. Apply those checks before assuming the USB-C receptacle is physically broken.
10. A compact troubleshooting workflow
- Disconnect and inspect: look for fraying, bent contacts, heat, liquid, corrosion, burning, melting, or looseness.
- Make it safe: if wet, disconnect and allow complete natural drying; never probe or apply heat, compressed air, rice, cotton swabs, or paper towels.
- Substitute: test a known-good cable and compatible charger directly.
- Reverse once: repeat the connection with the USB-C plug flipped.
- Separate functions: test charging, data, and display with equipment that supports each function.
- Cross-test: try the suspect cable on another compatible device and try several capable cables on the original port.
- Escalate: stop when damage is visible, warnings persist, or the fault follows one port across known-good cables.
This process gives you a defensible diagnosis without risking additional damage. The key distinction is whether the failure follows the cable or stays with the port, while remembering that USB-C capability differences can produce a failure even when no hardware is broken.
