Do not decide from the logo, display name, or writing quality alone. Treat an unexpected text as unverified until you confirm its claim through the company’s app, a website address you type yourself, or a phone number you already trust. Do not click its link, call its number, reply, pay, or share account information while it is unverified. An unsolicited message can be a genuine promotion, ordinary spam, or an impersonation scam, and the same warning signs can appear in all three.
What the three labels actually mean
“Spam,” “promotion,” and “legitimate business message” describe different aspects of a text. Spam is unwanted messaging; it may be harmless advertising, an illegal marketing message, or a fraud attempt. A promotion is a commercial offer such as a discount, sale, loyalty reward, or new product announcement. A legitimate business message is one that really comes from the organization it claims to represent and concerns a transaction, service, or offer you can reasonably connect to that organization.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
These categories overlap. A real company can send an unwanted promotion, making it both legitimate and spam from your perspective. A scammer can write a convincing “promotion” that is neither genuine nor safe. Inspection can reveal warning signs, but it cannot prove the sender’s identity. The safest goal is therefore not perfect classification; it is choosing an action that protects your information and money.

A familiar business name, logo, short code, or conversational tone can be copied or spoofed. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that business impersonators make messages appear to come from organizations recipients know. Conversely, an awkwardly written message is not automatically fraudulent: legitimate automated systems can contain errors, and sophisticated scams can be polished.

Use the message as a prompt to verify, not as the verification itself. If independent checking cannot confirm the claim, leave it unanswered and report or block it.
The fastest safe decision
Use this sequence whenever an unexpected text arrives:
- Pause. Do not tap links, open attachments, call the number in the message, reply, or make a payment.
- Identify the claim. Is it about a delivery, account, toll, job, prize, purchase, fraud alert, or something else?
- Check your expectation. Did you recently place the order, contact the company, subscribe to its texts, or start the transaction?
- Inspect the requested action. Urgency, credentials, payment, one-time codes, or a request to move the conversation elsewhere raises the risk.
- Verify out of band. Open the company’s known app, type its address yourself, or use a phone number on a card, statement, or prior bill.
- Choose a response. If the company confirms the message, follow instructions in the trusted channel. If it cannot confirm the claim, stop interacting, report it, and block or filter it.
This process works even when you cannot determine whether the text is technically spam or a genuine promotion.

Warning signs that deserve a pause
Each sign below is a reason to verify, not conclusive proof. Several together—especially a request for money or sensitive data—should be treated as a likely scam until independently disproved.
You did not expect the contact
An unrequested delivery notice, toll bill, prize, job offer, account warning, or transaction question is a common lure because it fits events that might happen in everyday life. The FTC’s April 2025 review of 2024 reports highlighted fake delivery problems, phony job opportunities, fake fraud alerts, unpaid toll notices, and “wrong number” texts among the five leading reported text-scam types.
The message creates urgency or fear
“Act now,” “your account will close,” “a fee is due today,” and similar deadlines are designed to prevent you from checking. A real issue can be time-sensitive, but urgency never replaces independent verification. Take the time to open the official app or contact the organization using a trusted number.

It asks for credentials, personal data, or a payment
Requests for passwords, full card numbers, bank details, Social Security numbers, security codes, or identity documents are high-risk. The FTC’s consumer guide states: “Legitimate companies won’t ask for information about your account by text.” Do not provide such information through an unexpected message, even if it appears to use the company’s branding.
Be especially cautious about demands for gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or payment apps. The FTC identifies these unusual payment methods as recurring features of impersonation scams because they are difficult to reverse.
It tells you to click, call, or reply
A link can lead to a look-alike login page or a download. A phone number in the text can connect you to the impersonator. An unexpected reply can confirm that your number is active or draw you into a longer fraud. Do not use any contact route supplied by a suspicious text.
The sender details do not corroborate the claim
Look at the complete number or sender ID, but do not treat it as authentication. Strange sender formats, an address unrelated to the organization, or a mismatch between the claimed business and the message content are useful clues. A familiar-looking sender can still be spoofed.
The wording is odd—but do not rely on spelling alone
Inaccurate wording, unusual punctuation, or an unnatural tone can be a clue, and CTIA lists them among signs to watch for. They are not a reliable test by themselves. Judge the requested action and verify the claim independently.

When you may have opted in
If you recently bought something, joined a loyalty program, or checked a box agreeing to texts, a promotional message is more plausible. It is still safer to open the company’s app or type its known website address yourself rather than using the promotion’s link. Confirm that the offer appears in your account and that the terms match.
When you did not opt in
An unsolicited promotion may be ordinary marketing, an incorrectly addressed message, or a scam. Do not “test” it by entering an email address, card number, or password. Use the company’s independently verified support or privacy channel to ask whether the message is real. If there is no matching account or offer, delete, report, and block it.
Opting out safely
Do not reply “STOP” to an unknown or suspicious sender. CTIA guidance advises against replying to unknown texts, even with that word. For a business you knowingly signed up with, use opt-out instructions found in the company’s verified app, website, or prior statement—not instructions you cannot authenticate in the message itself.
How to verify a message without using it
Use a known app or type the address yourself
Launch the organization’s official app from your phone’s installed apps, or manually enter a website address you already know. Do not search for the address and then assume the first result is genuine if the search result itself is unfamiliar; use a bookmark, prior statement, or address you have previously verified. Check for the same order, alert, balance, or offer inside the account.
Use a trusted phone number
For a bank, card issuer, utility, delivery company, or other provider, use the number printed on your card, bill, contract, or an existing statement. Explain that you received an unexpected text and ask whether the organization sent it. Never call the number in the message while it is under suspicion.
Confirm the details that only the real organization should know
Compare the order number, date, destination, amount, or case reference shown in the trusted channel. Do not volunteer information to make the story fit. If the company says there is no problem or promotion, stop interacting with the text.

Understand what verification can and cannot establish
Verification confirms whether the underlying claim exists in the organization’s records; it does not prove that every future message from the same sender is safe. Treat each unexpected request on its own. Sender identity inferred only from a display name, logo, or familiar wording is not independent corroboration.

| Message pattern | Why it works | Safe action |
|---|---|---|
| “Your package could not be delivered; pay a small redelivery fee.” | Many people are expecting parcels, and a small charge feels plausible. The FTC reported fake delivery messages impersonating the USPS among common 2024 reports. | Check the order in the retailer or carrier app you already use. Do not pay through the text. |
| “Suspicious activity detected; verify your bank account now.” | Fear of account theft encourages immediate clicks. The FTC described fake fraud alerts appearing to come from banks or Amazon. | Open your bank’s known app or call the number on your card. Do not use the text’s link or number. |
| “You owe an unpaid toll; settle today.” | Recipients may worry about penalties and not remember every trip. | Visit the toll authority through an address or phone number obtained independently and check for a real balance. |
| “You have been selected for a prize.” | Excitement can override caution, especially when a small fee is requested to claim it. | Do not pay or provide identity details. Verify through the organization’s known website, if one exists. |
| “We saw your résumé; complete this job task and buy equipment.” | Job seekers may act quickly and trust a professional-looking recruiter. | Confirm the employer through independently sourced contact details. Never send money or buy gift cards for a prospective employer. |
| “Sorry, is this [name]?” followed by friendly conversation | A wrong-number opener can develop into a relationship or investment fraud. | Do not continue the conversation or reveal personal details. Block and report it. |
The FTC’s April 2025 spotlight said these five leading categories represented about half of text frauds reported to its Consumer Sentinel Network in 2024. The agency hand-coded a random sample of 1,000 reports with narrative descriptions; the categories add detail and are not a replacement for its annual subcategories.

If you opened a link but entered nothing
Close the page, do not download anything, and avoid returning through browser history. Update your device and browser if updates are available. Watch for follow-up messages and review the account involved through its trusted app.
If you entered a password
From a known website or app, change that password immediately. Change it anywhere else you reused it, enable multifactor authentication, and review recent sign-ins. Do not follow password-reset instructions from the suspicious text.
If you shared card or bank information
Contact the card issuer or bank using the number on your card or statement. Ask what protective steps are appropriate, monitor transactions, and report unauthorized activity promptly. If you sent a payment, tell the payment provider how it was initiated and ask whether a reversal is possible; speed matters, but recovery is not guaranteed.

If you shared an identity document or one-time code
Contact the affected service through a trusted route, explain exactly what was disclosed, and ask about account locks, replacement credentials, or identity-protection steps. A one-time code can allow an attacker to bypass a login even when your password remains unchanged.

Report, block, and filter after you decide
Report in the United States
The FTC’s consumer guidance recommends forwarding unwanted texts to 7726 (SPAM), using your messaging app’s report-junk function, and reporting suspected fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The 7726 route and FTC reporting site are US-specific; other countries use different regulators and short codes.
Block the sender
Use your phone’s block function after preserving any information needed for a report. Blocking reduces messages from that sender but does not stop a scammer from using a different number.
Turn on available filtering
Phones, wireless providers, and messaging apps may offer spam detection or blocking. Names, settings, platform support, and prices vary by device and provider, so check the controls in your own messaging app and carrier account. Filtering reduces exposure; it cannot authenticate every message and can occasionally hide a genuine notification.
What the numbers say—and what they do not
The FTC reported $470 million in losses to text scams in 2024 in an April 2025 data spotlight. That is reported loss, not a complete estimate: many victims do not report, and the FTC cautioned that the figure likely represents only a fraction of actual harm. The agency said the 2024 amount was more than five times the number reported for 2020.
In a separate June 2023 publication, FTC staff reported $330 million in losses from text-message scams in 2022 based on Consumer Sentinel reports. It is an older, separate-year figure, not a current annual estimate. The 2024 scam rankings should likewise be read as the latest figures described by the April 2025 spotlight, not as rankings for 2026.
A practical comparison: likely real message versus suspicious message
No single row proves authenticity. Use the whole pattern, then verify through a trusted route.
| Evidence | More consistent with a legitimate message | More concerning |
|---|---|---|
| Expectation | You recently initiated the transaction or knowingly subscribed. | You have no related order, account activity, or subscription. |
| Requested action | It points you to the normal app or account process without asking for secrets by text. | It asks for credentials, payment, a one-time code, or an unexpected download. |
| Pressure | Normal terms and a reasonable time frame. | Threats, countdowns, secrecy, or immediate payment demands. |
| Sender evidence | The claim appears in an independently opened app or is confirmed by a trusted number. | Only a display name, logo, or caller ID supports the identity. |
| Payment method | Payment occurs through the account or checkout process you already know. | Gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfer, or a payment app demanded by text. |
| Independent check | The organization confirms the message and the details match. | The organization cannot find the claim or warns that the text is fake. |
Rules that prevent most costly mistakes
- Never treat branding as proof of identity.
- Never disclose account or payment information in response to an unexpected text.
- Never use the link or phone number supplied by a suspicious message.
- Never let a deadline prevent an independent check.
- Never reply to an unknown sender merely to ask who it is or to say STOP.
- Do not assume every unsolicited promotion is a scam; verify it instead.
- Do not assume every polished message is genuine, or every error-filled message is fraudulent.
The decisive question is not “Can I prove exactly what this text is from its appearance?” It is “Can I confirm the claim without relying on anything in the text?” If the answer is no, do not engage.
