To find out whether a Samsung charging problem is the cable, charger, or phone, test with compatible, known-good accessories and change one item at a time. If replacing the cable fixes it, the cable is the stronger suspect; if replacing the adapter fixes it, suspect the adapter. If the problem remains with both, check charging settings, heat, moisture, and port debris before arranging service. A symptom alone cannot prove which part has failed.
First, identify what the phone is doing
“Not charging” can mean several different things: no charging indication, an intermittent connection, unusually slow charging, charging that stops at a particular percentage, or normal charging without a fast-charging indication. Those symptoms do not point to the same cause.

Samsung lists accessories, temperature, charging settings, debris, moisture detection, and battery protection among possible reasons a Galaxy may charge slowly or stop charging. Battery protection can limit the charge or stop it early, so a percentage cap by itself does not show that the cable, adapter, or phone is defective. Samsung’s charging troubleshooting guide describes these possible causes.

Test the cable and adapter separately
Use a compatible Samsung cable and wall adapter that you know work. Keep the phone and wall outlet the same while swapping the cable, then keep the cable and outlet the same while swapping the adapter. Reconnect each plug securely. This one-at-a-time approach makes the result easier to interpret; Samsung recommends testing with another compatible charger and cable, but does not describe this exact controlled sequence.

- USB-C to C Cable for up to 25W Charging Speeds
- Get it in black or white to suit your style and device
- Swap the cable: Leave the adapter, outlet, and phone unchanged. If charging becomes reliable, the original cable is the stronger suspect.
- Swap the adapter: Use the known-good cable and outlet, changing only the wall adapter. If that fixes the issue, suspect the original adapter.
- Try the original parts again only if safe: Do not reuse an accessory that is visibly damaged, unusually hot, or causing repeated interruptions.
A successful swap is useful evidence, not proof of an internal diagnosis. If neither replacement changes the symptom, continue with the phone-side checks below.
Separate ordinary charging from fast charging
A phone that charges but does not fast-charge may have a settings, power-source, or compatibility issue rather than a broken cable or phone. Fast charging depends on the Galaxy model, enabled settings, and accessories suited to the charging tier; a PC or standard USB source may not provide fast charging. Menu names and locations vary by model and software version. Check Settings > Battery or the model’s charging settings, and confirm fast charging is enabled. Samsung says the Galaxy S23 series combines Fast charging and Super fast charging in its settings.

Samsung’s U.S. fast-charging guide gives these examples, not universal requirements for every Galaxy:
Recommended Free Tools
| Samsung charging tier example | Accessory example in Samsung’s U.S. guide |
|---|---|
| Fast Charging (15 W) | 15 W USB-A adapter with the appropriate USB-A cable |
| Super Fast Charging (25 W) | 25 W USB-C adapter; a 5 A cable is recommended for best results |
| Super Fast Charging 2.0 (45–60 W) | 45 W or 60 W USB-C adapter and a 5 A cable |
These are Samsung’s examples, not a guarantee that every Galaxy supports each tier or will charge at its headline wattage. Check the exact model’s compatibility before buying a replacement. See Samsung’s fast-charging guidance.

Check temperature, moisture, and debris safely
- Heat: If the phone is hot, unplug it and let it cool before charging again. Samsung says charging can slow or pause when the device temperature is too high.
- Moisture alert: Unplug the cable and wait until the charging port is completely dry. Water resistance does not mean it is safe to charge through a moisture warning. Samsung recommends gently shaking the device, wiping it with a soft, clean cloth, and drying it in a ventilated place with cool air.
- Visible debris: Turn off the phone and inspect the port with a flashlight. Carefully remove visible debris without metal objects or liquids. If debris is lodged in the port or you cannot clear it safely, do not force it.
Samsung notes that charging may stop when moisture is detected in the port to help protect the device. See Samsung’s charging and moisture troubleshooting guidance.

If wireless charging works while wired charging does not, that difference can help narrow the issue to the wired charging path, but it does not identify whether the cable, adapter, port, or another internal component is responsible. Likewise, a diagnostic result is not a guaranteed identification of a failed part.
