A big discount badge is not proof: the reference price may be inflated, or fees and restrictions may erase the apparent savings.
Start by matching the exact item
Before comparing prices, note the manufacturer and model number, then match the details that affect value: size, color, configuration, and condition. A refurbished or different configuration should not be treated as equivalent to a new item with another specification. The FTC’s online shopping guide recommends recording product details so comparisons are like for like.

Check the price against history and other sellers
Look for the item’s credible recent prices and compare current offers from other sellers. A price-history tool or alert may help you see whether the current offer is unusual or whether it changes later. Comparison websites are not all neutral: some promote their own products or rank sellers according to paid placement. Prefer sources you trust, and check how their rankings work, as the FTC advises.
Do not treat the crossed-out price, MSRP, or percentage-off claim as proof of a bargain. The FTC warns that liquidation discounts may be calculated from MSRP, which can be higher than what stores typically charged before the sale; the sale price could therefore be more than the earlier going price. In the United States, the FTC’s former-price guide says a comparison can have a legitimate basis when the former price was the bona fide price at which the item was regularly offered for a reasonably substantial period. That is guidance about advertising claims, not a universal shopping formula or a guarantee that any particular offer is lawful. FTC guide to former-price comparisons
Compare the amount you will actually pay
Calculate the total, not just the headline price. Include delivery, shipping, handling, taxes, and any other required fees. Check whether the offer depends on buying another product, applying for a rebate, or meeting eligibility conditions. The advertised price may not be available to every shopper or without extra steps. The FTC’s online shopping guide recommends checking both total cost and deal terms; its advertising FAQ says the same truthfulness standards apply to sale and price-comparison claims.

Read the condition and the return terms
Read the complete listing and its fine print. Labels such as refurbished, vintage, or close-out can signal that the item is not in the same condition as a new, current product. Then check whether returns are allowed, the deadline, who pays return shipping, and whether a restocking fee applies. Sale and clearance rules may differ from the seller’s usual policy.
For a liquidation sale, inspect the item carefully before buying: refunds or returns may not be available. The FTC’s liquidation-sale advice specifically cautions shoppers to check merchandise and return terms.

Use a simple offer-by-offer comparison
When you have more than one option, compare the same criteria for each listing. A lower sticker price can lose its advantage once you account for a different condition, required fees, or stricter terms.

Make the final call without the sale label
Ask whether you would still want the item at this total price if it were not marked down. Buy if it meets a real need, the all-in cost is acceptable against comparable options, and the terms work for you. Compare further, wait, or pass if the price history or reference price is unconvincing, a cheaper equivalent is available, or restrictions make the savings not worth the risk.

There is no universal discount percentage that makes an offer a good deal. In Canada, the Competition Bureau describes specific ways businesses can substantiate an ordinary selling price claim: more than 50% of sales at the claimed ordinary price or higher within a reasonable period, usually within a year, or a good-faith offer at that price for a substantial period, usually within a year immediately before or after the promotion.
